Dean Melvin, Professor Parsons, Professor Spear, and Professor Haskins, the class adviser, have selected leaders of the class, all of them widely known. Each of the students has been particularly prominent in one field of activity and has made a place in others as well. Although high scholarship was not considered essential, all of the men chosen have fine academic records. We congratulate these nine men on their contributions to the class and to the University and wish them future success. Dwyer Secretaries [80] Honor Societies The Honor Societies of the University — the Senate in the College of Engineering, the Sigma Society in the College of Business Ad- ministration, and the Academy in the College of Liberal Arts— func - tion to encourage and reward high scholastic attainment. Candidates who have met scholastic requirements laid down by the constitutions of the societies may be accepted by vote of the current undergraduate members. Character qualifications and participation in university activities usually are considered. At present the groups are considering adjustments in their organization that will permit eventual merging with suitable national honor societies, if that course is considered desirable. The Senate is the oldest of the societies. Its initial meeting was on May 1, 1921, under the leadership of the late Professor George F. Ash- ley. Since that time approximately sixteen members of each graduating class have been honored with membership. Included on its rolls are Professor Albert E. Everett, ' 23; Professor ElmerE. Haskins, ' 25; Pro- fessor Edward S. Parsons, ' 22; Professor William C. White, ' 25; and Professor Albert E. Whittaker, ' 24. For several years Professor George H. Meserve has served as adviser to the Senate. The Sigma Society was founded in 1925 by Dean Turner F. Garner, then Dean of the School of Business Administration. Originally known as Sigma Delta Epsilon, the society has accepted the more common name. There are one hundred and five members of the Sigma Society at present, five of whom are members of the faculty, sixteen of whom are undergraduates. The faculty members are Mr. Sidney R. Bloomfield, ' 37; Mr. Raymond G. Fennell, ' 26; Mr. Rudolph M. Morris, ' 32; Mr. James A. Patterson, ' 35; and Mr. Gerald R. Tatton, ' 28. Since 1927, Professor Charles W. Havice has been adviser to the Sigma Society. Youngest of the honor societies is the Academy, founded in April, 1937. The members and the adviser, Dean Harold W. Melvin, hope that its numbers will increase with the growth of the College of Lib- eral Arts, but will keep intact the high standards which the society has set for itself, even though the membership remain small. The groups present annual scholarships of one hundred dollars to the freshmen of the preceding year who have attained the highest scholastic rankings in their respective colleges. Each presentation forms part of the program of a Mass Meeting during which an eminent speaker is presented by the group making the award. Other activities of the societies include sponsoring of speakers at meetings to which outstanding students are invited, discussion meetings on topics of in- terest, and social gatherings of the members themselves. Brown, ' 39 Assistant Manager [142] Coach Jimmy Dunn master-minded his first football team to a successful season, winning four of the seven games . Starting from scratch with a new system of coaching, the players overcame many setbacks and disheartening injuries. Although a different eleven started every game, new players performed well and the fine record of North- eastern football was maintained. The season opened inauspiciously against Boston College. Not only was the score lopsided, but several star players suffered severe injuries. Then followed a victory over American International College, a fumbling loss to St. Anselm ' s, and a three- touchdown win from Lowell Textile. The Huskies continued the perfect football record against Rhode Island State in the most thrilling game of the year, winning in a last period 8 to 6 fiction finish. Before the other feature victory of the year, the eleven traveled to Canton, N. Y., to be defeated by St. Lawrence. The season was closed on Alumni Day before the largest crowd of the year at Huntington Field with a 12 to 6 win over Springfield College, ending the careers of three Northeastern greats — Captain Frank Meehan, Gustav Rook, and Zenas Bliss. Captain-Elect Jimmy Connolly and Coach Dunn can look to a successful season next fall with experienced material acquainted with the new style of play. The dif- ficulties envisioned by many sports followers because of the changed rules seemed to have no terrors for the Huskies, since members of the star freshman team of last year reported, in addition to a number of veteran players. During the first contests there was as much interest in the relative performances of the sophs and the old men as in the outcome of the game. Paradoxically, the troubles of the schedule resulted from the lack of players, for the season ended with but twelve men on the squad, for five key performers were lost through ineligibility. In its second year in the New England College Conference, the basketball team finished fourth. Out of eighteen games, they won seven. The highlight of the schedule was the closing game with Connecticut State. Against a powerful Connecticut team, the Huskies fought an uphill battle to come out on top by a score of 45-40. Coach Dunn turned in a good job under trying circumstances and can be counted on for better results. Mainstays of the team were sophomores Smith, Gleason, and Labowitz. Jimmy Connolly and Stan Rogers stood out, as did retiring Captain Frank Meehan and his classmate Emery Spidell. Since most of the feature players were second and third year men, the outlook for the future is again bright. The statistics show three wins, a tie, and nine losses, with a ranking of seventh in the New England Intercollegiate Hockey League. The three victories came in a group as the high spots of the early season. Boston College, Colby, and Bowdoin fell in succession as the Husky skaters hit their peak. The 9-7 win over Boston College was especially satisfying, after the interesting bat- tles of last year. With the change of divisions, however, hockey fortunes shifted, sev- eral of the early-season aces being unavailable, so that the remaining games were not so satisfactory for Northeastern rooters. Captain Karol Krystyan, veteran goalie, Bob Fielding, Ray Metheral, and Bill Hartwell will retire, but many of the feature players of this winter will report again next ye ar. Captain-elect John Byrne set up a fine record for the games in which he played. Though competing in only ten contests, he ranked fourth in scoring among New England players, and compiled the best average of points per game in this section of the country. With such a leader, Coach Gallagher and his squad should enjoy a successful schedule next season. Whipple, ' 40 Track The track outlook was dismal when Coach Tatton, for the first time as head coach, issued his call for candidates early in December. Many of the regular point get- ters of last year were no longer competing. Persistent efforts by the coaching staff and the members of the team, however, produced a satisfactory season and all are looking forward to continued success in the outdoor meets. In the first dual meet, the Huskies were victorious over Bates at Lewiston, Maine. Against Brown and the University of Maine, the track forces did not fare as well, being overwhelmed by Maine and nosed out by the Bruins in a disappointing contest. Individual stars were Captain George Leek, Danny Miles, and George Masciani- ca. Though each turned in many fine performances, these seem most noteworthy: the 6 ' 2% jump by Miles at Brown, the record 1000-yard run by Leek at Maine after he had finished a fast mile, and Mascianica ' s 600-yard effort in the Bates meet which bettered the cage record held by Olympic runner Arnold Adams. The relay team won two of three possible firsts in feature runs in New York and Boston. In the Prout Games, Middlebury and Amherst were outdistanced, and the Huskies breezed by St. John ' s College, Connecticut State, and New Hampshire at the Millrose Games at Madison Square Garden. The finishing order in the B.A.A. Games was New Hampshire, Northeastern, Connecticut State. In the I.C.4A. meet, the three star performers represented Northeastern. Miles was the only successful place winner, with a 6 ' 2 leap for fourth place. Grant, Holmes Mascianica, Leek, MacDonoug [151] Kr ' • - - , Cross Country Even though greatly weakened when Captain-elect Zamparelli dropped out of school, the cross-country runners, led by Captain George Leek and Ralph Townsend, performed well, winning two of five dual meets. The win over Massachusetts State was gratifying for the Huskies became the first team to defeat the State runners on their home course. After defeating Connecticut State and Massachusetts State, the harriers dropped meets with Rhode Island and Maine. In a triangular run against Tufts and M.I.T. Northeastern finished second behind a strong Jumbo team. In the final appearance of the season, the N.E.I. C. A. A. A. competition, the Huskies gained eighth place with Captain Leek tenth man to finish. Coach Morang should have a worthwhile record next fall, since most of his veterans, including Captain-elect Robert Pritchard, will again run for the Red and Black. The team was moderately successful, winning eight of nineteen games and securing third place in the conference. Starting the season with much untried material, Coach McCoy formed a credit- able team, developed several star players, and left the nucleus of a nine for 1938. Co- Captains Frank Meehan and Gustav Rook contributed to the success of the team, Meehan through his tight defensive work at first base and his powerful hitting, Rook through his clever pitching and outfielding. Other men who became important during the season are Joe Callahan, Bill Little, and Ralph McDonald. Callahan, known to sports writers as Smoky Joe , was one of the finest pitchers in intercollegiate circles in recent years. After the season had ended, he left school for a career in professional baseball. McDonald played well at second base, and was rewarded at the end of the season by election to the captaincy for 1938. Coach Gallagher should find little trouble this year because of his own proved ability, and the familiar men he will work with.
