It is a characteristic of the human animal that everyone thinks his rea- sons for doing things are unique. There is probably some truth in this belief - certainly the exact pattern of motives is different for each of the six or seven million students who fre- quent 'the hundreds of college and university campuses across the nation. Northeastern State College is no dif- ferent. Ask any student why he is here. lf he knows, it will be at best, be a vague answer. Probably, when you really get down to it, we're all here to find ourselves. For some the search is easy. For others it will be a never end- ing task. Psychologists tell us there are two types of people: success-seekers and failure-avoiders. The success-seeker takes his lumps, calls them temporary setbacks, and begins anew. The fail- ure-avoider goes into fits of depression at the thought of the same setback. Of course, these are extremes, but each of us could be classed as one or the other. Some of us come to Northeastern seeking the awards of educational suc- cess. Others come to avoid the possi- ble failure of life in the outside world. It's like a reprieve for four years. You can usually spot these types. The success-seeker could be the stu- dent who works for six different organizations. He usually stays in town on weekends because he needs the extra time to catch up. The failure- avoider could be the guy who packs his bags on Thursday night so he can race to Tulsa after his last class on Fri- day and sit around home all weekend. Which kind of person are you? Suc- cess-seeker or failure-avoider?
