Northeastern Oklahoma Junior College is located in Miami, Oklahoma, and for some of us this is home for almost nine months. As freshmen, we arrived in a state of awe and amazement with questions of “how” and “if’ we would make it through two years at this institution. We were backed with a little courage, for we had braved the terrors of pre- enrollment unlike many others. We were bewildered, lonely and uncertain as to the reasons for leaving the security and comfort of family and friends. These reasons differed greatly; however, we had but one goal in mind—an education. We came with the idea of staying here to get educated, little knowing NEO would soon become home. Those cold, brick buildings seemed heartless at first, but they soon took a different meaning. However, it was not familiarity with the buildings that changed our attitudes but us. It seemed like an unending process of changing those casual “‘hi’s’” and How are you’s?”’ into long and probably lifetime friendships. For the sophomores returning meant the reuniting of old friends and becoming acquainted with many new faces, while feeling sad by the absence of friends of the past year whose path had led them away from here.
