As freshmen, we arrived in a state of awe and amazement with questions of “how” and “if’ we would make it through two years at this institution. We were backed with a little courage, for we had braved the terrors of pre- enrollment unlike many others. We were bewildered, lonely and uncertain as to the reasons for leaving the security and comfort of family and friends. These reasons differed greatly; however, we had but one goal in mind—an education. We came with the idea of staying here to get educated, little knowing NEO would soon become home. Those cold, brick buildings seemed heartless at first, but they soon took a different meaning. However, it was not familiarity with the buildings that changed our attitudes but us. It seemed like an unending process of changing those casual “‘hi’s’” and How are you’s?”’ into long and probably lifetime friendships. For the sophomores returning meant the reuniting of old friends and becoming acquainted with many new faces, while feeling sad by the absence of friends of the past year whose path had led them away from here. We, unlike the freshmen, were not scared but, instead, excited to be returning to our winter home. SOT eae Ey = PES Ta TSS The chimes and the fountains greeted our arrival, spruced up and looking grand. Though the school had some new additions for us like tennis courts, an ice cream machine in the cafeteria, bubble gum machines in the Student Union, air-conditioning in Shipley and Cunningham, and remodeled lab rooms, we were more excited about the new information and people we would pick-up while here for our education. As freshmen we had our first encounter with pre-enrollment—one of the many plagues of a college student. Pre-enrollment should be classified as Excedrin Headache 1407. It is discovering that all the classes you absolutely have to have, have already been filled. It is filling out multiple forms that ask everything short of how many times you brush your teeth a day. It is standing in one line for forty- seven minutes with a blue card only to find you needed an orange one. It is think- ing you’ve got everything completed and being “‘surprised”’ by a five dollar parking permit. It is standing for an hour in line and as the third person in line seeing the lady hang up the “‘out to lunch sign.” It is standing in this line and trying to act like you know what you’re doing, when you don’t know what you’re doing because you don’t want everyone else to know you don’t know what you’re doing and you don’t realize yet that no one else knows what they’re doing. It is trying to figure out the course number from the NEO number and finding out that General is no longer an accepted major. It is the end. You have reached your final destination—the last line. You’re tired, worn-out, harrassed, and totally disgusted. Your hair has the inevitable friz- zies. Your nerves are strained and your complexion shows it. Your eyes are droop- ing and bloodshot, your shoulders are sagging, and your mouth has forgotten what a smile is. It is then that you discover that the line you are in is to take pictures for the 1975-76 Viking. After pre-enrollment we began to con- ys sisi S | |' sider ourselves students of NEO. However, the real test began on August 25, as our alarms went off and we started our first day at college. As freshmen we observed the cool, calmness of the sophomores and inside our hearts felt they were laughing at our un- certainty. Yet, the sophomores through the freshman maturing process saw only themselves reincarnated and desired only to help. It didn’t take long for sophomores and freshmen to become one without feelings of upper or lower classmen. wietey MAE Freshman orientation began a long list of traditional activities followed by an invitation for the girls by the sophomore football jocks for a dunking in the fountain, which would soon be com- monplace. That night jeans can be seen dripping from the windows in the girls’ dorms. Then there is the morning when you stumble from the dorm | only to face a mysterious puff of bubbling foam. The mystery is abolished when you reach ye old dunking grounds and find the fountain has become one gigantic bubble bath. This same bubble bath doubles as a home for various fish and crawdads at certain times of the year. You might call it a multi-purpose fountain. The Norse Wind ushers in tradition with articles on formation | of clubs, discounts, coupons and editorials. Additional discounts are provided for us by the Welcome Wagon ladies who do their best | to make us feel at home in Miami. Student Senate follows through in helping us feel at home in the dorms by furnishing refrigerators for a nominal fee. | Norseman spirit develops quickly with the games, homecom- | ing, and Wednesday night in Kansas. Thursday morning is spent wondering about the writing on the sidewalks. Which Nancy just turned 18? and is it the Pete you know that is now twenty-one? And from the writing on the walls of Commons we wonder just how well our jocks are loved. We realize that tradition has become a life-style when we can no longer find the doors to the Library- Administration Building for all the announcements and VOTE FORS. . . plastered together. 14 : In our spare time there was a variety of places to go, and things to do. After class we often met in the lobbies of our dorms and just rapt about new information we had picked up in one of our classes; other times we went to the lobby just to sit in front of the “boob tube”’ just to sort of be able to stare and think on things and sort them out. If music and food were what a body required at the time, a person could hike it on over to the Student Union or the pit. Foosball, air hockey, and pool became the popular of the inside games, but when a soul decided it needed some fresh air, whether it was sunny or rainy, there was always a good game of football or frisby they could get in on. Teer ee “ae wae meena ry iN a mee | ny pe College not only means classwork for some of us, but it required jobs on campus to help pay for books, room and board, tuition, and all those nice tickets Dorthea keeps charging us for parking in the wrong lot. These jobs consisted of being proctors, teachers’ secretaries, janitors, bookstore clerks and just general anythings. But our main job was still acquiring an education. - wil 19 Most of our classes were taught in the traditional lecture, take-note type class. Some of these lectures were given on tape, so if the student didn’t catch on to it the first time, the tape could be put on fast rewind and they could study the subject of that lecture again. Teachers’ offices were filled with pictures of family and plants so as to make them a place not to be feared by us, the students, but more as a peaceful place to talk about why we were not do- ing so great in the class we had under them. Exams were a thing to be dreaded not only for those students of yesterday but for those of today. The 3-M answer sheets became very popular with the staff, while not that popular with the students in general. Students could be heard walking out of classrooms saying, “I don’t think any of the multiple answers fit that question.” Ra ROLE DANE ENT cil: CEPR. Se NR MA Be SS BTR OTE ta DS PSS SE The Honored We are the elite. We were placed upon platforms by our fellow students and teachers. But most of us deserve the honor placed upon us by our friends because we gave more of ourselves than what we needed to. Many hours of school service without recognition was the reason behind our honor. But we were not working for the honor or praise; in- stead, we were just doing something worthwhile; the honor was just an‘ added extra for us. But our real honor was knowing we were caring for something worthwhile, and that was Norsemen pride. i ; : : — QUEEN CANDIDATES—Contestants for Homecoming Queen for 1975 were, from the left, front row: Jerrie Howell, Pryor; Pam Kennedy, Jay; Carolyn But- ton, Baxter Springs, Kansas; Nancy Nichols, Salina; Sherry Brown, Muskogee; Penny Lee, Skiatook; Marcia Hill, Bartlesville; LaShell Kegg, Jay; Nanette Wright, Grove. Each year names of youngsters who have need “5 are accumulated through various schools and city and state of- fices. The names of these youngsters are then submitted to the college student body for adoption. As many as 600 youngsters are adopted by approximately 1600 college students. The college studen ts and their young partners then begin several days of festivities which are climax- ed with an evening visit with Santa. The students visit the youngsters at home, take them out for treats, and escort them to the Christmas Party. The college students spend approximately $5,000 to assure a merry Christmas for their young friends. What do the college students receive in return? Ask any college student who par- ticipates and he will state that the main feeling is one of per- sonal satisfaction, but that the feeling is also much deeper, dif- ficult to express, capable only of being felt. 108 We took the initiative to organize, campaign, enlist and then plan to get started with a active year of activities to keep involvement high on campus. We are responsible for getting things done or changed on campus. We have initiative which is what keeps this campus running. O [ | soo eras Sar ee =a 112 Our organization consists of of- ficers elected at large from the stu- dent body. The other members are from the various organizations around campus to represent each group. Student Senate meetings are held each Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. At these meetings, members discussed suggestions to help better the school activities. The Student Senate is used as a voice of the student body. All meetings are open to the rest of the student body. i] ® ii a w) a a) | a : The Student Senate officers for fall, 1975 are from left to right, Rhonda Hare, senator-at-large; )_ Cynthia Sherrill, treasurer; Marcia Hill, president; Joe Zachritz, Vice President; Debra Rye, secretary; Gloria Graves, senator-at-large. ee) Second Semester Student Senate officers elected for the spring semester are from left, Rusty McGhee, Senator-at-Large; Linda Bradley, Secretary; David Bringaze, Vice-President; Marcia Hill, President; Debbie Yocum, Treasurer; and Donald Faulkner, Senator-at-Large. Officers are elected to try and straighten out the problems left us from the previous Freshman Class, while bettering our own finances for the year. 115 —s we 116 The Viking Staff started off with meetings on top of meetings. There were numerous problems such as trying to get a group of creative people to all reach a unanimous decision on anything. When the beginning problems were resolved, we got down to business to put together this book only to find that our problems had just begun. Problems such as trying to get all of a club’s officers together at the same time for their pictures, finding out which queen was for what team, and finding out if anyone on staff knew how to be creative when they had finals. But we got together and put together more that “‘just a book.” We put out this book. You could always count on the Norsemen squads to give you something to cheer about. . . . although many times it was hard to hear our cheering. We were always ready to do a jump and give a yell for our favorite team. These are the nine girls who were our 1975-1976 football Cheerleaders at NEO A M COLLEGE. When the competi- tion got rough, we all rolled together to get things going our way. Some referred to us as the ‘‘Snobs,”’ “Cool Cats,” ““God’s gift to the NEO campus”, and a few other choice names. But, for the most part, we were just nor- mal college students finding a way to let off excess steam, earn scholarships, or just serve the school. We knew we were Norsemen and, therefore, were No. 1; we just had to prove it. Some of us were a bit scared. We knew our competition was tough but our coaches kept on telling us that we were the toughest and we believed them. Even our fellow Vikings backed us. They welcomed us with a Pep Assembly plus. We were no longer a football team attached to a school but in- stead the school and us made one big team. We couldn’t be stopped—we thought. We opened our season at Highland, Kan- sas to our disadvantage—off home turf. But we still knew we were best cause we had the spirit. But something happened—we lost. It was a hard fall for us. The trip was a long one back to the dorms for defeat was rough for us to accept. But we were Norsemen so no loss could get us down. The next week was filled with practices on top of practices. We had let down our coaches and they let us know it. Hard work and no leisure time was what our days were filled with. The curfew of 10:30 for us was easily met. Who could ever stand up after those sessions? Our fans joined us in the tra- ditional Norse row fol- lowed by our fight song. We started off by fum- bling the ball—it hit us hard. Some of our fans began to cut us short. But even more lost faith when the Blue Dragons scored, until we finally got all our rowing toget- her and beat them by 14 points. We met our vic- tory with enthusiasm and Norseman pride. We were the conquerers and our plans still included that National Champ- ionship. 169 ee. ae 170 Again on Robertson field we met our opponents with the idea of winning. But things were tougher than we thought they would be for, as we ran off field at half time, the score board showed a score of 0-0. But the coaches helped us get our stuff together to work as a team and sock it to the Highland Scotties. Victory Again! But the Golden Norse had just begun to shine through, for the next week we were back on the field with the Haskell Indians. Not only did we shine—we raced through to stomp the natives. Victory was so overwhelm- ing we ran out of fire crackers to touch the sky—but not out of spirit. Homecoming afternoon all the talk on campus didn’t just focus on our lovely queens but also on how much of a lead we would attain by the final score. Nothing of “if” we would win but by how much. The Robertson field had not faced defeat in 39 games. No one had thought at such a time of festivities, we would feel such a low blow as a loss of 21 to 18. Defeat! A word we hadn’t even con- sidered at the opening of the season. Here it was on our doorstep. . back to school with a bit of our wind knocked out of us, not only by our most recent defeat but also by the reaction of our school and coaches. Back to the grind stone of practice. We had mixed emotions—we felt like hanging our heads in disgrace. We had lost yes, a word not mentioned on the NEO Campus, our classmates passed us in the halls with either looks of disgrace or cut- ting comments. We lost yes, but we had tried. So off home field again we went to tackle the Coffeyville Red Ravens. But again our score turned out short and loss was still a part of our vocabulary. We returned home determined to win the game against Tulsa Jr. Varsity. We had enough of defeats and were determined to work together and get back our win- ning streak. And we did. M RE TREN, as 4 CBr ach ra 172 Independence Hutchinson Highland Haskell Cisco Coffeyville Tulsa JV Pratt Fort Scott Dodge City But that streak didn’t last long for we were back on the road and as our record showed we needed a victory. By the end of the third quarter we were sure we had it wrapped up with the scoreboard showing a 20-7 lead over the Pratt Beavers. But again our fans, as well as us, were sur- prised as the Beavers ran over us to beat NEO by 5 points in the last quarter. Our last away game was scheduled against the Fort Scott Greyhounds, we needed a victory bad—as our season showed we now stood 4-4 with only two games left. Yes, a victory would really help us. But again a victory was not what met us at Fort Scott. We returned home to realize that defeat again would mean a losing season for us. So we raced on the field with the roar of the crowd knowing we would shine that night and give our fans a game they would not forget. We played a very hard game but we won. Though we didn’t meet our goal of being National Champs, we did roll together as a team and now can say “I am proud to be a Norseman forever.” Il WALSWORTH Marceline, Mo., U.S.A 173 EY Sl EPS oye: ee ‘ gic | H | | 1 ] ! ] | } | The Educator We are the group that consist of administration, counselors, teachers, and to some we were even classified as friends. We tell our students we are here to help them climb the ladder to a higher education, though some of us are often accused of standing in the way. We sweated and toiled to be sure our students grasped the full meaning of our lectures. We had problems though, some students never realized how many hours of preparation went into those long, boring lectures or how often we tried to revise and update our jokes, as well as classwork, to meet the demands the students must meet to face the challenges of tomorrow. You can tell about us by look- ing at our desks. They are filled with national news, food, and new dis- coveries in our field of study. We didn’t accept the fact that when classes ended for the day, we are finished for we are busy plan- ning for the next. S i i i a i { er 176 Governor Of Oklahoma The Honorable David L.
