During the two day meet, Alan who weighs 233 pounds, was able to out-muscle all but one opponent and placed second, nationally, in the heavy weight division. As a result of his out- standing efforts, Alan made it possible for Northeastern to be tied with the University of Miami for fifth place nationally in team standings. The aim of Bugg House is the involvement of the members of the student body, faculty, and administration in consideration of important campus and off -campus issues for the sake of a stronger college community. Some of the events this year in- cluded: controversial speakers, discussions on contem- porary issues, bands and dances, as well as a frown contest. BOWLING LEAGUE Trophies for Northeastern ' s oldest organized activity, the Bowl- ing League, is open to all students. It offers an oppor- tunity to improve your bowling score. The league meets every Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 PM at the Habetler Bowl. Each week four-man teams compete for beautiful trophies which are awarded at the end of the trimester at the Bowling Banquet. This year the banquet was held at the Black Steer Restaurant on April 6, 1968. Awards were given to such outstanding members as the Most Improved Player, Highest Team, High Point Bowler. In January of 1968, Mammoth Cave, Kentucky was the destination for a reward- ing display of the grandeur above and beneath the surface of the earth. Slides and movies of geographic interest were shown throughout the trimesters of 1967-1968. In addition other field trips were made available to all students interested in geography. INTER-VARSITY CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP Seated: Vicki Whitesell, Peggy Sato, Vance Jorgensen, Vernon Jorgensen, Grace David. Standing: Carol Hickman, Olivia Anderson. Throughout the history of American colleges, Christian fellowship has impelled groups of students to ban and center their attention on evangel- ism, prayer, Bible study, and missions. For this purpose, a national move- ment known as Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship came into existence. Northeastern ' s chapter of Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship, founded in 1965, aims to provide Christian Fellowship and to bring Christ to our secu- lar campus. ! 117 PHILOSOPHY CLUB Row 1 : Ed Giebutowski, John Hansen. Row 2: Marvin C. Katz, Ph.D., Florence Lyons. The Philosophy Club aims to increase interest in philoso- phy and inform the students of the current work of philoso- phers today. A forum is also provided by this group for philo- sophical discussion over and above the opportunities allotted during class time. 118 SOCIOLOGY CLUB The purpose of the Sociology Club is to further interest in sociology and to enable the student to become aware of the problems facing society today. The Twenty-One Plus Club was founded to provide fellowship with other students who have returned to the college to continue their education. It provides a pool of information to assist the member in adjusting to college life. The club provides a discussion group and occasional programs of special interest to the return- ing students. It encourages its members to participate in college functions and in doing so, make a contribution to the college. Sigma Tau Sigma was chartered in December, 1966 and is the only tutorial sorority at Northeastern. All of the active members devote one hour per week at des- ignated homes to culturally and educationally enrich the disadvantaged children through tutoring. CHESS AND CHECKERS CLUB Northeastern ' s Chess and Checker Club is a member of the Intercol- legiate Chess League of America. Each year the club sponsors one or two chess exhibitions at school. From time to time, the club sends repre- sentatives to local tournaments. Last year a team was sent to the National Intercollegiate Team and Individual Championship. This year a team will be sent to the National Intercollegiate Team Championship. This champion- ship will be held in Chicago, and will be co-sponsored by Northeastern and the University of Chicago. Membership in this club is open to anyone interested in the game of chess or checkers. Lessons for be- ginners in chess and a problem solv- ing contest are part of each weekly meeting. NEWMAN CLUB The Newman Club on campus is affiliated with the National Newman Club Federation, whose member clubs exist on almost all major non-Catholic col- lege and university campuses throughout the country. While endeavoring to unite the Catholic students at Northeastern both spiritually and temporally, the Newman Club also welcomes members of other faiths to its membership. The dance was well attended by notables of the college, students, and brothers. Music, refreshments, dancing, and just good times were in abundance. COLLEGIUM MUSICUM The members of Collegium Musicum at Northeast- ern Illinois State College, under the direction of Dr. Ber- linger, consider themselves musical historians. The group, which specializes in music of the Renaissance and Baroque period, has performed in concerts that are held at the college. He became an instructor at NORTHEASTERN ILLINOIS STATE COLLEGE in 1963 and at the - . .v same time commenced work on a doctorate in physics at Illinois Institute of Technology. He was an ou - :; ' r ' -[:i standing student and teacher, receiving a NSF fellowship at I. I.T. commencing September 1967- Because , of the terminal nature of his illness he refused this honor and elected to spend the remaining, moriths of his ' ; life at NISC. He died January 12, 1968. Re-activated in September of 1966, Interpreter ' s Theatre aims to give every member an opportunity to gain confidence in public speaking through interpretative programs for the college community. Membership is open to anyone on campus who is willing to work and contribute to Interpreter ' s Theatre. Those with an interest in acting, writing, or directing are especially urged to employ their talents and join this group. Comedy through tragedy is the range for shows, plays, and readings sponsored by Interpreter ' s Theatre for all to enjoy.
