It serves as a symbol of accomplishment, the end of a period of training, but, even more important, it symbolizes the beginning of a new phase of learning. The education which has been given to you by the citizens of your community is going to prove to be your most valuable asset. Thomas Paine cautioned us when he said, What we obtain too cheaply, we esteem too lightly . If we are not careful we can all make that mistake in evaluating our public school system. The United States is the only major world power that has attempted to educate all of its citizens. It is the one great factor which has produced and maintained our gr-eat nation. During your years in school we have tried to teach you more than facts and Fundamental processes. We have tried to teach you how to live a happy, productive, useful life in a democratic society. It is the prayer of every teacher that we have taught by example as well as with books and words. You are going to miss Manchester High School and your many friends. But on the other hand, you are going to meet new friends, other situations, and have experiences which will be just as rewarding as the ones you have had here. The class of l956 is especially close to me. I have taught most of you from seventh grade through twelfth grade. During that time I have come to love and respect you as individuals and as a class. I hope that the friendships which I have enjoyed with you will remain constant through the years ahead. Congra tulatlons on your graduation. My best wishes go with you as you depart from the school which you have helped make such a warm and friendly place. Sincerely yours, if W ' ' Carl W. Nelson Rfliv- xsglovg affa- CZ.. ,VP 'fllllllzhd FOOTSTE PS It is significant that commencement holds new horizons for all. Various pursuits of endeavor will lead some to college, others to positions in the business world. Any one of these occupations, in time, will lead you to great accomplishments. You review these formative years of your school life, you then realize you left countless footsteps which reveal the direction of your future livelihood. These indelible impressions can never be forgotten. Good administration, good teachers, good deeds, good reports, good schools, good teams, good will just doesn't happen. There is, in most cases, a lot of hard work put forth. So it is with planning the future educational needs. The Board of Education has seen fit to become a merged district so they can better function on behalf of the citizens of your school system. Rehabilitation, adding to present building facilities at Mt. Wolf and Manchester, construction of an elementary center in the Conewago area and York Haven-Newberry area, are evidences ofa growing area. No, the iob is far from being complete for there is no status quo in the educational field. Therefore, our footsteps will be as memorials long after we as individuals have faded from the horizon. Your efforts then will be put to task in providing adequate education facilities for the communities in which you live. You have a right to reminisce, give thanks, say a prayer for those who have helped you to become a successful person. As you become respectable citizens, the splendid efforts of your teachers will have been rewarded. Our best wishes for all the success and happiness you deserve. May your spirit and enthusiasm be reflected throughout your life. Remember the cheerful laughter and the anticipatory smiles, way back in the year of September 1952? Forty-three freshmen crossed the threshold of M. H. S. that month and year. Their foosteps traced down the hall into a room called the gym and they learned there were to be four big steps to be taken at M. H. S. Their first step was being a freshman, then those steps wer sepa- rated into rooms. The stage with Mrs. King and the cafeteria with Miss Freestone. At this stage the steps were divided into we's . We made many friends and got along very well and before we knew it, we had completed our first steps with the aid of our class president, Nina Weigle. Some of the outstanding highlights that took place were the skating and freshman parties. Summer passed very quickly, and before we real- ized it school had begun for our second big step. We welcomed sixty-three students from Mt. Wolf. This increased our enrollment and now we had a grand total of 106 sophomores. We had taken our second step, by earning the name of sophomores. We were assigned to four different rooms, 1-A with Mrs. King, 1-B with Mr. Allison, and room2 with Miss Barrett, along with a few iuniors in that room. Making and selling peanuts as one of our class Proiects proved to be fun as well as profitable. Some of our fun-filled activities of that year were the Hal- loween party, and the Be-Bop Hop, which wasa record dance. The school term was coming to an end, and we had a new phase of school life. At least we had a firm holding, with our two steps completed. Summer came and went quickly, and we came back to school the fall of 1954. We were juniors, and our high school years were coming to a close. We began to participate in a larger part of the school affairs. We were divided into three home- rooms. Rooms 2, 5, and the lobby as a substitute because of over crowdedness. The teachers were Miss Barrett, Mr. Kramer, and Miss Bricker. Our class president was Phyllis Diehl. We added funds to our class treasury by selling potato chips. This was the year we would buy our school rings. As juniors we looked forward to the junior-senior prom which was held at the Hotel York- town and was really a wonderful event. The theme of the prom was Melody of Love. Report card day came and this made us seniors. Now our third step was completed. We came back to school in September of 1955. Here we are, seniors at last. What a year to remem- ber. This was the year all seventy-one of us seniors were awaiting. Now we were put into rooms 10 and 12 and Mr. Zimmerman, and Mrs. King were our class advisors. Norman Bair is our president, help- us through difficult spots. This was our busiest year of all with our dance, banquet, yearbook, newspa- per, and our senior play, which was George Wash- ington Slept Here , held on March 15th and 17th. We received an income from selling ice cream. A ham supper was held on February 18, for the benefit of our yearbook, and a variety show for our class treasury. On may 25, we held our senior prom, Moments To Remember , at the Hotel Yorktown, which was sensational. Our senior trip, for which everyone worked so hard, was completed and May 31 came and we had completed our fourth and final step. We will never forget M. H. S., as our footsteps are traced down through the years. PRCPHECY Not too long ago, l had the pleasure of sneaking my spirit from behind a curtain and listen to a real gone swami go into some mean trances . . . Man the things she saw in those palms .... Jane Aabels' status in the future seems to promise the iob of chief stamp Iicker at the post office she will manage. Norman Bairs' engineering course will pay off when the Metropolis of Manchester needs rewiring and he lifts the option. l'Max, the Taxi, Baker contrary to her name will not be running a cab, but effective filing system in Stanley Craft's accounting firm. The swami even saw Leonard Heilman's shore home, with smaller cottages for rent in his name, a real sand tycoon. The Air Spirit nabbed Gary Nouse, Walt Hoover, Robert Dietz, Ronald Griffin and Paul Shaffer, chances are they'll be 30 year men. The Sea Spirit grabbed Dick Stevens who is sketch- ing mermaids on the side of his ship. The Ground Spirif' enveloped Glenn Elfner, Wayne May, Jim Deardortf, Duane Bupp, Don Sweitzer, Ronald Danner, Richard Stambaugh, Don Stoner, Dale Biller, Carl King, Sam Chapman, Wilbur Miller, and Keith Rode,-hup two three. The Swami told Jesse Smith his pneumatic tube eleva- tor system would give his bank customers trouble. Man what a bevy of beautiful bookkeepers will emerge from M. H. S.-Patricia Bloss, Lois Brothers, Bonnie Cramer, Anna Dellinger, Judy Deitz, Zoelynne Fritz, Pauline Hoover, Betty Kochenour, Jo Ann Lloyd, Jane Mohr, Joyce Myers, Rita Raffensberger, Catherine Smith, Charlotte Wallace, Nina Weigle, Ellen Wilhide, Shirley Witmer, and Shelva Zirkle. l think their bosses should give kick-back to our old age fund. Our frigid friend- freezing frenzy has definitely bewitched Dot Ely,-she'll continue working her way through the ice cream cabinet until she's chief dispen- ser in Ray Dennis's grocery store. The modern miss to tomorrow may be astonished by the wireless, lotionless techniques Gloria Frey will use to produce curly hairdo's. A local garage will take on new appearances-for this you need a crystal ball. Oscar Seager has invented o never fail mud towing device. Alan Toomey checks fuel injectors. Ralph Reeser has incorporated his sheep- ranch with an upholstery firm, and sub-contracts cut rate seat covers. This strange apparition will be topped by a T. V. tower over which will be transmitted Bill Zinns All Day D. J. show, which originates in the basement. Glenn White will test the tower daily by hanging on the pipes. George ShafTer's going to give us spirits trouble by experimenting with an ultra-ray flash that captures the invisible. Barney Weigles' fame, not only local, will stem from his exclusive breed of lilac bushes. The iet tractor which will be seen flying low plowing a mean ditch, and piloted by Ed Swartz will be sub- contracted by Sam King for his farm. Terry Prowells' thoroughbred goats will win all blue ribbons in Eileen Reeses' animal talent shows. Mr. Nelson will be seen nodding his head in approval of Linda Finks elementary teaching, and will be heard muttering, She went to Millersville, you know. Hershey will still be the site of the rock and roll shows, but Gary Gembe, too old to roll, will just sit and rock as he strums a real gone tune on his guitar. Spirit Sea Sprite forsees an enlargement of the or- ganization she sponsors, Gail Klinedinst and Martha Mumma are expected in the Waves glub. Prediction has it, Ronald Sundays' hands have the curve to hold barber tools. The balmy swami wasn't kidding when she invi- sioned Larry LaPrairies' success as a salesman, he's even been selling long underwear in the spirit world. Needless to say this establishment will need its own first aid station which will be manned by Laura Smith. R. N. Emelyn Seitzs, first Carnegie Concert is forseen a success. We spirits were a bit concerned about medical pro- gress but the situation has eased. Jolene Buchar will be a technician. Lance Strayers' palm held the strangest set of lines. I heard his future predicted as the designer of ci wing- less, motorless, bodiless plane, could it be a saucer?
