The PRINCIPAUS MESSAGE Congratulations. The class of 1953 is the first class to graduate under the newly- formed Conewago-Forge Hill Joint School System. You face a future probably no different from that faced by the typical high school graduate of 1953. You have had a period of preparation in which the home, the church and the school have helped to develop your original capacities for living in a complex worldg but always remember that your preparation does not end with graduation from high school. You will be called upon to make many decisions in the future. Those decisions will be based largely upon the type of training you have had and on your ability to adapt yourselves to confronting situations. The future of America is in the hands of its youth. Each generation must face the future with faith and trust. Hold to your ideals. Always demand the best from yourselves and from the world in order that you may bring honor to yourselves, to your school and to society. 7

The SUPERVISING PRINCIPAUS MESSAGE The graduation class this year is the first one to be graduated under the authority of the Board of School Directors of the Conewago-Forge Hill Joint School System. Last July, Forge Hill School District was established by a merger. A merged school district comes into existance when a majority of electors in each district vote in its favor. However, there are preliminary steps that must be taken before the electors may vote. There must be a plan of school reorganization, prepared by the County Board of School Directors and approved by the State Council of Education. When this approval is obtained, it becomes the duty of the County Board of School Directors to present a petition for the merger to the County Court of Common Pleas. The electors of East Manchester Township, Manchester, Mt. Wolf, and York Haven boroughs voted in favor of the merger. The first Monday of last July, the School Directors of Conewago Township and the newly formed Forge Hill School District signed an agreement to establish a Joint School System. . ' 1 ' i 'l The enlarged school system was established to provide better schools for the people of the community. Good schools are necessary in our form of government. In fact, edu- cation is America's greatest challenge. For 40 centuries, nations have risen only to fall. In all this time, no country has ever thoroughly trained its people to govern. If most Ameri- cans become informed, active citizens, they will write a new chapter in the history of mankind. What is more important, they will be in a strong position to make ours the first nation not to fall.-Myer 8a Coss. We trust that your educational experience has been enlarged to the point where you will make a contribution to the greatest democracy in the world, namely America. We hope that you will do your part to make our government better and raise the general Welfare of the great masses of people. Your education should give you a little more moral courage to meet your problems during your life. I congratulate each member of the 1953 class of the Manchester High School in having met the graduation requirements established. I trust that you will live and act in such a manner that you will be an honor to yourself, your parents, your friends, and your high school. I desire for you, best wishes and a successful and happy life. IRA Y. BAKER, Supervising Principal. 6
