SCOTT W. KNAUB According to Woodrow Wilson- No thoughtful man ever came to that point in his life where he had time to look back upon it, who did not know and acknowledge that it was what he had done unselfishly and for others, and nothing else that satisfied him in the retrospect and made him feel that he had played the man. That alone seems to him the real measure of himself, the real standard of his manhood. And so men grow by having responsibility laid upon them, the burden of other people's business. Their powers are put out at interest, and they get usury in kind. They are like men multiplied. Each counts manifold. Men who live with an eye only upon what is their own are dwarfed beside them-seem fractions while they are integers. The trustworthiness of men trusted seems often to grow with the trust. We, of Manchester High School, are proud and happy to have in our community a person to whom the above quotation applies, for he has truly labored, Uunselfishly and for others, and nothing else',, during the many years he has served as an educator. Coming to Manchester in 1908 as a teacher in the elementary schools, he became the principal of the high school in 1910, the year its first class was graduated, and retained that position until 1931. Later-in 1938, he again became connected with our school as an assistant county superintendent, a position which he held for twelve years. At the present time he has the honor of being a member of the board of education. In recognition of his long years of service in which he displayed a resolute main- tenance of standards, a high sense of devotion to duty, and a sympathetic understanding of the individual, we cheerfully dedicate this edition of Les Memoires to Scott W. Knaub. 3 DEDICATION

FOREWORD Forward Into A. New Experience An experience for which We've been preparing, not only through twelve years of school, but for which we've been in preparation from the first day we came into existence as an individual. Our preparation cannot be listed and checked off as a packing list, when going on a trip, its values lay too deeply for that. Love cannot be measured by meters, consideration by inches or devotion by yards. Yet, these three things have been significant factors in this prepara- tion, about which we speak. Preparation for what? A useful part as a, free individual in a free world. Free thinking in the right channels of society. Free thinking for honest participation as a skilled worker or laborer. Free thinking, and devoted to at God who has granted us this growth, and religion of our choice. A Citizen--good, or bad-il This, our goal? Although we seem at times completely unadjusted and ungrateful, we are, in reality, humbly grateful, and very seriously aware that now we are to try-try to impart our love, in understanding our neigh- bors, well as other nations, consideration for our fellow man, and devotion to our families, God and precious heritage, Freedom. Forward. 2
