Manchester High Sc11oo1's SENIOR CLASS WZ'6At'lflt.4 Les Memoires of 1953 1 FOREWORD Forward Into A. New Experience An experience for which We've been preparing, not only through twelve years of school, but for which we've been in preparation from the first day we came into existence as an individual. Our preparation cannot be listed and checked off as a packing list, when going on a trip, its values lay too deeply for that. Love cannot be measured by meters, consideration by inches or devotion by yards. Yet, these three things have been significant factors in this prepara- tion, about which we speak. Preparation for what? A useful part as a, free individual in a free world. Free thinking in the right channels of society. Free thinking for honest participation as a skilled worker or laborer. Free thinking, and devoted to at God who has granted us this growth, and religion of our choice. A Citizen--good, or bad-il This, our goal? Although we seem at times completely unadjusted and ungrateful, we are, in reality, humbly grateful, and very seriously aware that now we are to try-try to impart our love, in understanding our neigh- bors, well as other nations, consideration for our fellow man, and devotion to our families, God and precious heritage, Freedom. Forward. 2 SCOTT W. KNAUB According to Woodrow Wilson- No thoughtful man ever came to that point in his life where he had time to look back upon it, who did not know and acknowledge that it was what he had done unselfishly and for others, and nothing else that satisfied him in the retrospect and made him feel that he had played the man. That alone seems to him the real measure of himself, the real standard of his manhood. And so men grow by having responsibility laid upon them, the burden of other people's business. Their powers are put out at interest, and they get usury in kind. They are like men multiplied. Each counts manifold. Men who live with an eye only upon what is their own are dwarfed beside them-seem fractions while they are integers. The trustworthiness of men trusted seems often to grow with the trust. We, of Manchester High School, are proud and happy to have in our community a person to whom the above quotation applies, for he has truly labored, Uunselfishly and for others, and nothing else',, during the many years he has served as an educator. Coming to Manchester in 1908 as a teacher in the elementary schools, he became the principal of the high school in 1910, the year its first class was graduated, and retained that position until 1931. Later-in 1938, he again became connected with our school as an assistant county superintendent, a position which he held for twelve years. At the present time he has the honor of being a member of the board of education. In recognition of his long years of service in which he displayed a resolute main- tenance of standards, a high sense of devotion to duty, and a sympathetic understanding of the individual, we cheerfully dedicate this edition of Les Memoires to Scott W. Knaub. 3 DEDICATION TABLE OF CONTENTS FOR-EXVORD . . DEDICATION .... ADMINISTRATION . . . FACULTY . . . ACTIVITIES . . ATHLETICS . . UNDERCLASSMEN . . . SENIOR SECTION Play ...,....... Last July, Forge Hill School District was established by a merger. A merged school district comes into existance when a majority of electors in each district vote in its favor. However, there are preliminary steps that must be taken before the electors may vote. There must be a plan of school reorganization, prepared by the County Board of School Directors and approved by the State Council of Education. When this approval is obtained, it becomes the duty of the County Board of School Directors to present a petition for the merger to the County Court of Common Pleas. The electors of East Manchester Township, Manchester, Mt. Wolf, and York Haven boroughs voted in favor of the merger. The first Monday of last July, the School Directors of Conewago Township and the newly formed Forge Hill School District signed an agreement to establish a Joint School System. . ' 1 ' i 'l The enlarged school system was established to provide better schools for the people of the community. Good schools are necessary in our form of government. In fact, edu- cation is America's greatest challenge. For 40 centuries, nations have risen only to fall. In all this time, no country has ever thoroughly trained its people to govern. If most Ameri- cans become informed, active citizens, they will write a new chapter in the history of mankind. What is more important, they will be in a strong position to make ours the first nation not to fall.-Myer 8a Coss. We trust that your educational experience has been enlarged to the point where you will make a contribution to the greatest democracy in the world, namely America. We hope that you will do your part to make our government better and raise the general Welfare of the great masses of people. Your education should give you a little more moral courage to meet your problems during your life. I congratulate each member of the 1953 class of the Manchester High School in having met the graduation requirements established. I trust that you will live and act in such a manner that you will be an honor to yourself, your parents, your friends, and your high school. I desire for you, best wishes and a successful and happy life. IRA Y. BAKER, Supervising Principal. 6 The PRINCIPAUS MESSAGE Congratulations. The class of 1953 is the first class to graduate under the newly- formed Conewago-Forge Hill Joint School System. You face a future probably no different from that faced by the typical high school graduate of 1953. You have had a period of preparation in which the home, the church and the school have helped to develop your original capacities for living in a complex worldg but always remember that your preparation does not end with graduation from high school. You will be called upon to make many decisions in the future. Those decisions will be based largely upon the type of training you have had and on your ability to adapt yourselves to confronting situations. The future of America is in the hands of its youth. Each generation must face the future with faith and trust. Hold to your ideals. Always demand the best from yourselves and from the world in order that you may bring honor to yourselves, to your school and to society. 7 Conewago-Forge Hills JOINT SCHOOL SYSTEM BOARD Board Officers Left to right-Alfred Strine, treas- urerg Nelson King, secretaryg Russell C.
