THE PR IDEN T HAROLD T. WHITE The Northeast Mississippi Junior College, like many other two- year institutions, is rapidly becoming a true community college serving the broad range of needs of the entire population. Since its first year of operation in 1948, the mission of Northeast Junior College has been broadened from the narrow scope of providing a baccalaureate program to providing programs which meet the post-secondary needs of the adult population. The student's primary purpose at Northeast is to gain an educat- ion. The desire for knowledge burns within the learner. It can be sensed in the air, in the scattered conversation on the way to classes, in the busy hum of voices in the Union. It spurs heated discussions over a calculus problem or debate over an English novel. It is present in the noises and odors of lab. The search for knowledge causes the learner to ask questions, to seek out answers and explanations. Northeast exists for the student. The develop- ment of the scholar's intellect is Northeast's primary concern. It is here in her library, in her classrooms, in the labs, that the student acquires knowledge and understanding of life. No component ofa college is more important than the faculty. The most gifted student must be challenged and inspired and directed. No faculty member will be able to provide incentive unless the instructor is dedicated to the cause of education, willing to spend the long hours necessary on research, counseling, and keeping abreast of the instructor's field. Northeast has such a faculty. The Northeast Mississippi Junior College is truly on the move! president white 47
