Under the direction of coaches McLeroy and Deaver Northeast High School had caught the winning fever They burned out the eyes of all their foes And for anyone to challenge them, they had to be on their toes. BUSINESS MANAGER Margaret Pendleton EDITOR: Felicia Bowens Bibb System Enters NewEralnEducation A new era in the Bibb County School System began this year with the desegregation of all its public schools. The initial change in the high schools took place the final five days of the 1969-70.school term. This enabled a much smoother start in school this year. Under the new plan, three large high schools and one vocational school were formed in Bibb Coun- ty; namely, Northeast, Central, and Southwest High Schools. Every school has a supervising principal with an associate principal in charge of each individual building in the high school. Each complex is close to the 60-40 white-black integration ratio as dictated by the federal court and the situation seems to be working quite smoothly. The supervising principal for the Northeast Complex is Miss Ann Henry. Mr. Bill Meeks and Miss Eleanor Hurley are in charge of the Mark Smith and Lasseter buildings, respectively. Last year, Miss Henry was the principal of H. S. Lasseter High School, Mr. Meeks, of Mark A. Smith High, and Miss Hurley of Alexander III Elementary School. The Northeast Junior High is composed of two buildings, build- ing A and B. Building A is the old Appling Junior High School and Building B is the old Appling Senior High School. Mr. Burney Lester is the principal of the A building and Mr. Harry Thompson is the prin- cipal of the B building. Approximately 745 students have enrolled in the Lasseter build- ing and 780 in the Mark Smith building. Together with the 1203 students attending the junior high buildings, a total of 2729 are at- tending the Northeast Complex. Also for the first time, Bibb County’s junior high schools are co-educational. To the delight of some senior high students, several coed classes have also been formed in the senior high division. Each school is off to a good start and many hope for even a brighter future. August 31, 1970, was the open- _ ing day for the students of the new ‘Northeast High School. Excite- ment, curiosity, and tension filled the air as each student began an- other fun-filled year of learning. Everyone knows how and why Northeast High School has come into being. The question now, of course, is what will become of it. No one can foresee the future but every student can and must help to make it a bright and suc- cessful one. Northeast is now functioning on its own two feet. Won’t you do your part in helping to make it walk? Just as countries watched the new American government after the Revolution to see if it would work, people are watching Northeast to see if it will work, also. And just as our forefathers made the national government work, so we can make our school government work.
