Emotions and sounds distinguished this class from all the rest-the laughter, the cries of approval over royalty, the depression of defeat, the tears of happiness, the dawning boredom of the final year—no longer car- ing about grades, the gay faces at school dances, the agony of mo- notonous homework and the im- possibility of continuing the same old routine. Every senior at some- time during the year had these feelings, but when all was cast aside, they still felt the pride of being the class on top. It was great, but being a senior was a lot of work, too! There were tests. applications for scholarships and loans and plans for the future to be made. Days were spent listen- ing to college speakers and guid- ance teachers, trying to arrange the confusion. All these mem- orable times led to the final goal of a LN 1970 senior... graduation. LN seniors were hopeful about the scores on their SAT tests, even though they had to wait in long lines on a cold, November morning. 35 Senior minds absorb memories of unforgettable To be a senior is to have ques- tions, mixed thoughts, days that never seem to end, pressures and above all to be experiencing a dream that you never thought would be realized so soon. A sen- ior year is a final year. It is a time that you have worked all your life for and a time that took forever to arrive. Finally it comes and when it does you think back at everything that happened and all the fun you had. As your eyes fill with tears and your mind becomes filled with sadness you begin to wonder why it did come so fast and if you really want it to be over. The after thoughts work in- to reality as you remember that all your previous school times 36 happenings while moving toward new destinies were over and unable to be re- lived again. Graduation also came and past leaving you with a life- time of schooling brought to a close. Along with the end of your senior year comes lost friend- ships and divided pathways. For some these pathways lead to col- lege or work, for others the paths lead to war and service, and for even others they lead to a com- pletely new way of life in mar- riage. All pathways are new and make you more adult. But no mat- ter where the pathways lead, you will never be able to forget where they all began...in the life of be- ing a Rocket and in being a mem- ber of Lincoln Northeast High School. 37 38 juniors Juniors find new doors of opportunity in Where is it? wonder AFS finalists, Susie Buss ear and Marjorie Reeves as they anxiously await wordontheirplacement abroad. For the Class of '71 the year had come for those mind-search- ing tests they had heard so much about. The PSAT and National Merit tests refreshed the mem- ories of students about concepts they had gathered over the years. AFS finalists, Susie Bussear and Marjorie Reeves, went through the tense and exciting moments of being selected from LN. The County Government Day representatives participated in a unique day which ended in a seven-minute cramming session to summarize the events of the day. This year’s first semester class officers made extra money by selling basketball antenna top- pers. Second semester class of- ficers again spent many hours planning the annual junior-senior party. The Madrigal group, formed for the first time at LN, sang at public and school pro- grams. Juniors who were in any of the singing groups this year found themselves to be TV celebrities as their Christmas program was televised over cable TV. The math department had a first this year with the addition of a computer. It was connected to the University of Nebraska’s com- puter and was constantly in use. Clothing 3 was also a new class beneficial to those who wished to continue in home economic related occupations. Construc- tion of new garments, repairs, al- terations, draperies, designing patterns and re-upholstering all were part of this class. It was not long before those homework as- signments were being given and sophomores found the new media center to be a help. It met all of their study needs and even pro- vided things to do during spare time. One of the first things sophs discovered was the wider variety of ways to spend their free time. Games, meets, plays and dances were just a few. Homecoming, Turnabout and the Candlelight were new experiences. The May Day assembly was epecially ex- citing, since members of the sophomore class were elected as royalty. Penguins, International Club and Science Club were a few of the activities in which sophs took an active part. When it came to spirit, the sophs really had it. They made tough competition, after a slow start, when it came to the class victory yell at the rallies. It did not take sophs long to re- alize how much they needed their guidance counselors. Schedule changes, school problems and a three-year plan that made sure all necessary requirements for grad- uation were met were just a few of the “helps sophs received from their guidance counselors. Since many sophs turned six- teen this year, they went through the nervous moments of trying for their driver's license. But by the end of the year there was one lesson all sophs had learned. They now knew what it meant to be a Rocket. Office personne Necessary part Preparing the daily bulletins, mimeographing the many tests and handouts and compiling the attendance sheets are just a few of the jobs performed by the I help make up of the school Northeast clerical staff to help the school run more efficiently. The staff of six also supervises the student assistants assigned to the office. Helpful office assistance is given to students by Mrs. Leona Scheffert, Mrs. Erma Collister and Mrs. Jeanette Kahm. Issuing activity tickets to LN students each fall is an im- portant job of Mrs. Selma Pavey, school business and activities manager. 72 Administrators keep school running smoothly Helping to make the school op- erate smoothly is the job of Vice- principal Harold Dietrich and Assistant Principals Richard Col- erick and Barry Moore. Mr. Dietrich takes care of stu- dents' individual problems. He is also in charge of planning assemblies. Mr. Moore is responsible for instruction, which includes the enormous task of scheduling classes for more than 1,600 stu- dents. Student services is the main concern of Mr. Colerick as he counsels daily with many Northeast pupils. Mr. Harold Dietrich, vice-principal, is frequently called upon to make a special announcement over the public address system. Mr. Barry Moore and Mr. Richard Colerick, assistant principals, discuss the latest changes taking place in the high school curriculum. 73 Newest Northeast addition Offers relaxed atmosphere Job specialization is needed in Mr. Cecil Pine, building super- maintaining an efficient school. intendent, assisted by 14 men, Mrs. Blanche Schafer, cafeteria keeps the school and cafeteria director, is responsible for pre- in order, paring nearly 800 lunches daily. 74 Mr. Cecil Pine, building superintendent, is able to check the temperature of each classroom on this electronic chart. Job specialization necessary part of LNHS Art, home economics, industrial arts, science and vocal music are all part of the special education curriculum. Many of the students are given the opportunity to par- ticipate in a work-study program under the direction of Mr. Gary Tunnison, student employment coordinator. Instructor and coun- selor for the department is Mrs. Dorothea Plum. Keeping the student body in good health is the gigantic task of the school nurse, Mrs. Lucille Witt. Throughout the year she takes care of the visual examina- tions, height and weight measure- ments and dental checks, plus the regular series of aches, bruises and cuts. Wrapping a student's sprained wrist is all part of Mrs. Lucille Witt's job as nurse. Mrs. Dorothea Plum, special education instructor, plans upcoming assign- ments for her classes. Registering sophomores for second semester classes is a major concern of guidance counselor, Mr. Frank Simon. 76 Junior sponsors, Mr. Lynn Crozier and Mr. William Maly, talk over the financial problems of the Class of 1971. Counselors help, Schedule, test Initiating sophomores, helping juniors plan for the future and preparing seniors for graduation keep eight guidance counselors busy. Innovations include a different approach to scheduling prob- lems. The change helped to move students in and out of class more quickly and with less effort. Tests given this year included the PSAT, S.A.T. and National Merit Examination. Counselors also held a college information session in which they informed parents of the many scholarships available, university entrance requirements and financial aid programs. Monday morning brings the usual line of sopho- mores waiting to talk to Mrs. Vivian Wilson, guidance counselor. Mrs. Beryl Bowlin and Miss Margaret Billings, senior counselors, frequently refer to the various university bulletins in order to help seniors decide where to go after graduation. 77 Sophomores gain skill in driver's education Developing safe driving habits and a proper attitude are the goals of driver's education,” ac- cording to Mr. Bernard Galloway, driver's education instructor. Driver's education covers one semester and includes on-the- road training, simulators, films and classroom instruction. This class is especially popular with sophomores anxious to obtain their license. Mr. John McIntyre, driver's ed instructor, demonstrates the proper use of a simulator car. 78 Checking the training car for flat tires and scratches is done by Mr. Bun Galloway, driver's education teacher. PE instructors Stress fitness Gym class activities are under the careful supervision of Mrs. Joan Albers and Mrs. Vietta Short. Basketball, gymnastics and swimming are only a small part of the many physical education activities. Students are given the oppor- tunity to participate in many extra- curricular games also. Science classes acquire specialized equipment Northeast students were once again offered a variety of science classes to supplement their schedules. Biology, physiology, physics and chemistry are all part of the curriculum. The department also gained several pieces of new laboratory equipment including an atomic weighing machine and an on- loan computer. Biology teacher, Mr. Richard Temme, illustrates the latest lab discovery to Mr. Keith Watt. 86 The physiology class skeleton is both educational and humorous for science teachers, Mr. Reynold McMeen and Mr. Robert James. Home economics teachers, Mrs. Wanda Brown and Mrs. Mary Jean Gast, offer needed advice on installing a skirt zipper. Home ec department stresses practical skills Clothing construction, food preparation, family living and home planning are some of the home economics courses taught at Northeast. Girls majoring in home ec learn mostly through doing. Students in the sewing classes make such items as slacks, skirts and coats, while the food classes experiment with both the exotic and regular meal ideas. Field trips, fashion shows and a Thanksgiving dinner are all part of the program. Mrs. Ida Klockner, foods instructor, supervises another unusual creation by her class. 87 Miss Audria Shumard's electronic lab is useful in dictating to both typing and shorthand students. Teaching students to balance their journals is a major task for bookkeep- ing instructor, Mrs. Mildred Richards. Business education curriculum expands again Added to the curriculum this year was the complete, three-year distributive education program. Under the direction of Mr. Tim Nilsson, students enrolled in this project worked on business- related jobs to receive school credits. Other commercial and clerical subjects offered include book- keeping, notehand, shorthand, stenographic training, typing and business principles. Besides the regular typing and business classes, Mrs. Dorothy Vifquain and Mrs. LaVerne Rudell also sponsor the Reserve Pep Club. Mr. Tim Nilsson, DE coordinator, demonstrates how to use the new printing press which is a part of the distributive ed program. 89 Math instructors develop Ability, comprehension Mrs. Majorie Adorns explains to her class the many steps involved in prov- ing a geometric statement. Helping students to compre- hend and solve math equations is the objective of the six Northeast math instructors. The course of study ranges from general math to trigonometry classes. Increased ability and under- standing is the goal of the depart- ment. The use of a computer this year, was one of the new devices used in attaining this goal. 90 Mr. Robert Wohlers, algebra teacher, enjoys the use of a computer this year. Mr. Robert Els and Mr. Robert Wagner, math instructors, spend a few minutes before class illustrating a problem on the overhead projector. Mr. Richard Nagele is kept busy answering questions about the geometry assignment. Explaining and helping students to understand trigonometry is the job of Mr. Buren Thomas. 91 Language instructors employ Audio, lab, visual equipment French, German and Spanish are the three foreign languages offered at Northeast. Mrs. Muriel Shores, new French teacher, joined Mrs. Judy Wilcox, Spanish instructor, and Miss Margaret Dolezal, German instructor. The tie left the Rocket record at 5-2-1 and still ranked fifth in the state. Northeast used a stubborn de- fense in the final quarter to stop two North Platte drives and gain a 13-6 win. The final record of the Rockets with this added win stood Jim Skinner confirms official's decision as Maury Damkroger scores. at 6-2-1. 154 Somewhere in this pile lies the Bellevue fullback, who was a victim of a Rocket defense, which put many opposing backs in positions of pain. Fullback Maury Dam- kroger and Tackle Steve Westover were the honored recipients. Damkroger repeating on the All- City squad for the third year was the obvious choice forthe fullback position. He also was the only Northeast representative on the All-State Team. The lone Rocket victory came on a 25-0 win over Hastings. Cited for their offensive play were Terry Danek, Rick Genthe and Jim Hertzel. Outstanding on defense were Larry Swenson, Chris Brown, Jerry Barnett and Steve Harris. Even though the record posted by the Reserves was not out- standing, the Rocket fans salute the team's desire, drive and never give up attitude. Sophomores come on strong for 4-1-1 season The 1969 Northeast Soph- omores ran to another winning season. Coached by Mr. Hank Willemsen and Mr. Robert James, the team scored a total of 183 points while holding their oppo- nents to only 55 points, making for a 4-1-1 seasonal record. This gives the sophomore team a fan- tastic record of 33-4-6 over a period of eight years. The sophomores' tradition of desire and determination was up- held again this year and proved to be the downfall of many Rock- et opponents. Coach Willemsen cited the offensive line and the hard running backfield guided by Quarterback Gaylen Kennel and Backs Dwight Thompson, Tom Henson and Randy Schlegel. Linemen Ed McMeen and Steve Stehr were also commended for their efforts. The Sophomores in their first year discovered what is needed to be a member of a Rocket team. This experience combined with their ability should help them oc- cupy the vacant slots on the var- sity and reserve squads next year. Led by Rick Gochnour, the only senior on the squad, and Juniors Ron Greeno, Cliff Karthauser, Bernie Olsen and Jerry Kirkland, the Rockets ran to a third place finish in the state meet. This finish was the highest ever achieved by a North- east cross country team. Before competing for the state championship at Pioneer Park, Coach Max Hester’s runners swept firsts in the Fremont Invita- tional, Lincoln High Invitational, Nebraska Wesleyan Invitational, Lincoln Public School's cham- pionship and the district meet, while placing second only in the Trans-Nebraska conference meet. Coach BobHeffelfinger’ssquad not only took the state crown, but also won the Trans-Nebraska and district titles and posted a 10-2 season record. Led by the five starters, Tom Novak, Maury Damkroger, John Strain, Greg Wright and Jim Sin- ner, the Rockets beat Southeast and East High to gain a berth in the state tournament in Omaha. Both of these district games went into overtime before the Rockets prevailed. In the first round of the state tournament the LN cagers drew Boys Town. A Damkroger field goal with four seconds remaining in the game gave the Rockets a slim 57-56 victory. In the semi- finals the black and white found the going a little easier as they glided to a 71 -48 win over Scotts- bluff. In the final game the Rock- ets showed their strength as they downed a tough Omaha Tech team 64-54. The victory gave Northeast its sixth state championship and the fifth under Coach Ed Johnson.
