The performance was given in Morrison Hall before a crowd of enthusiastic Northeasters and their friends. This presentation, She Stoops to Conquer, marked the twentyssecond anniversary of the Senate Play, and was under the direction of Mr. Marcus Konick of the English Department. Previous to being selected as a Senate Play, l'She Stoops to Conquer had been a hit on Broadway. George Hastings and Charles Marlow come to an inn asking directions to Mr. Hardcastles home. They are greeted by Tony Lumpkin, the mischievious son of Mrs. Hardcastle's by a previous marriage. ln order to get even with a not too pleasant step-father, Tony sends Hastings and Marlow, who is coming to court his sister to his own home as an inn, The so-called gentlemen arrive at the I-lardcastle home, the same evening and immediately set about ordering the household around. Mr. Hardcastle doesnt mind being asked tc serve punch, but when asked in his best story of Prince Eugene and the Duke of Marlborough for a menu, he com' pletely explodes. Marlow makes immediate arrangements for his return home N f PLAY after his meeting with Kate Hardcastle. She is also completely contented at calling her love affair a day, until she is informed by a maid that Marlow, whom among women of reputation and virtue is the most modest man alive, but is said to be suited indifferent among women of another sort, has mistaken her for a bar-maid. She keeps up the pretense and forces Marlow to show histrue colors. ln the process he falls in love with Kate. To add to the confusion, Hastings, MarlOW's traveling companion, discovers his fiancee, Constance Neville, the niece of Mrs. l-lardcastle, is in the same house. Mr. Hardcastle, unaware of the attachment between Hastings and Miss Neville, has prepared a wedding between Con- stance and her undutiful son, Tony. All is straightened out when Tony is informed by his father he is ofage and free to marry whomever he pleases. The first liberty he takes under his new capacity as a man is to refuse Miss Neville, and have her free to marry the man ot her choice. Marlow is told of his Case of mistaken identity and as the lovers kiss, the curtain falls. The Northeast Swing Band, under the baton of lack Troriieri, provided the music for the play on both nights. The seniors who took part in the play are: l-lf-rbert Diifine, Harris Freedman, George Mills, Werner Marx. 'X'-f T I 'Y , ' ! ORCHESTRA liz l903 the Northeast Qrchestra was founded by Dr. A. Q. Michener who later left Northeast to become principal ot Central High School. lts original torm was a club. but later in N926 it became a regular school protect under the direction ot its present conductor, Mr. Paul E. Duffield. Although the initial group had but 25 to 30 members, the present group has an enrollment ot over 50 participants, nearly most ot whom ioined in the MF Class. Interesting to know also is that during the course ot the school term the Qrchestra plays at the Revue and Senate plays and at assernlglif s. The Orchestra also entertains at other lurzicr and Senior high schools throughout the city. BAND Time Northeast Band was oroarizzeii 1:1 PS9 under the direction of Mr. George Vtfaslico. The Band can be seen and certainly heard at every Northeast football game. Beside this event the Band also entertains at assemblies and Tune Conimencernents. There are about SO members in the group this term under the leadership of Mr. Francis Mixphy who took charge in '43 and is dolrig a great ioo. SWING BAND The Swing Band, sometimes called the Northe east Revue Swing Band, does not contine its activities to the inside ot the school but provides music lor ten junior high hops each year. This band is led by a student band leader and Mr. Duttield leads by proxy. The Swing Band, this term, is led by Tack Tronieri who is a very tine musician. A portion ot the Swing Band graduating with us includes Wattennislker, Fngle, Levin, Klee- inan, and Reese. is NORTHEAST - KENSINGTON DANCE COMMITTEE The Northeast-Kensington Dances originated as an after school social affair, held weekly in the school gymg they are now held on alternate Friday evenings at the Lighthouse Boys Club. These dances are looked forward to, as they are a great help in getting acguainted with our sister school, Kensington. The committee organizes and conducts these dances and deserves credit for a job well done. They have put forth great effort in bringing pleasure to the boys and girls of the respective schools. They always managed to attract a large crowd to these dances. The graduating seniors on the committee were Adam Dymecki, Robert Antosh, Rolland Wetzel. LUNCHROOM MUSIC During each lunch period in the NE lunch- room l Bebop and 'lmello Rooney Swing' can be heard by the fellows. This is the job of the Music Committee. ln return the fellows are asked to keep the lunch- room as clean as possible. This music committee was organized by Sam Stagliano in l947 and ever since has been on the job supplying music during the lunch period. TRAFFIC SQUAD The Traffic Squad, one of the largest organizae tions in Northeast, is under the direction of Dr. Howarth. Members of the sguad are posted at each door and stairway to prevent boys from wandering in the halls and disturbing classes. For each period there is a captain and lieu- tenant who, for the most part, are seniors. The work of the Traffic Sguad is exceptionally difficult because it takes strength of character to repri- mand a friend found breaking rules. THEATRICAL ELECTRIC CLUB Under the outstanding direction ot Mr. William N. Wilson, the Theatrical Electric Club maintains our stage lighting, public address systems, and movie cameras. lt is also one ot the factors in the success of the Revue and Senate plays. LOCKER SQUAD Many students do not realize what a tremen- dous task it was to care for the many lockers in the schcol. ln order that all detects of the lockers would stop and could be repaired, Mr. King organized the Northeast Locker Squad in 1936. The Locker Squad consists ot experienced groups. During their stay at the school the Squad is continually repairing the faulty equipment. Qi STAGECRAFT CLUB The Northeast Staqecraft Club was organized in l932. Repairing scenery and stage equip- ment and constructing scenery lor the Revue and Senate plays is the main job ot the club. Mr. Louis Herwig, HA Class Chairman, is the sponsor, and the members have done their jobs well. There are no regular meetings ot the club, all work being done in the students spare time. THE N ORTHEASTER COMMITTEE The Northeaster is a students handbook of Northeast. A similar book, previously issued in l925 and l936, was called the Pilot. The re- vision will contain many photographs, floor plans of the school, and information about Northeast. The book is to be written entirely by students under the guidance of Mr. Rofman. This book will be of invaluable assistance in getting the freshmen acguainted with the school, but it is not solely for them. lt will be interesting and informative to the seniors as well as the freshmen. lt is hoped that this book will arouse a keener interest in sports and organizations and will encourage candidates to go out for the various activities. Seniors on the staff are Werner Marx, Manny Mendel, Tack Peterman, and Arthur Groffman. TRIBUNAL Under the guiding hand cf Mr. Roland C. Doane the Northeast Tribunals duty is to see that all laws passed by the Senate are enforced. Students who violate laws are brought before the Tribunal, tried by it, and if guilty, are punished according to the degree of the offense. ln its l3 years of existence the members whoare on the Tribunal are students who have distin- guished themselves scholastically and also in extra-curricular activities around the school. Members of the Senior Class were: Carl Brown , . , ..,. Chief Tustice George Toroian . . . . Clerk Henry Doerfler. . . lustice U. N. N. E. The U.N.N.E., a relatively new club, formerly sponsored by Mr. Konick, consists of students who have a genuine interest in world affairs. The present sponsor, Mr. Twining, took the position in 1947. This club offers Northeasters a fine opportun- ity to become familiar with the policies of other nations, and with some of the problems that face the United Nations today. Students participating actively in the club are sometimes awarded extra credit from their history or social science teachers. CIRCLE Hi-Y ln 1944 the Circle l-li-Y was reorganized at Northeast under the guidance and supervision of Mr. Russell Tompkins, who has remained as sponsor ever since. Character building, sociability, aiding the school, and creating and maintaining through- out the school and community high standards ot Christian character are the aims ot the club. Among the activities ot the club is assisting in any way it may be called upon. DISTRIBUTIVE EDUCATION Since 1941, when the Distributive Education Course had its beginning at Northeast, over one hundred and titty boys have completed the course ot study and gone torth to put their knowledge into actual use. Dubbed the Hearn as you learn course it has become one ot the most practical lines ot study at Northeast. The boys attend school in the morning for the theory, and work during the afternoons and Saturdays in retail stores apply' ing their knowledge. Mr. Wiener, the courses teacher coordinator, with the aid ot a group of Philadelphia mer- chants, makes it possible tor the boys to obtain jobs in retail stores. During the term which has just been com- pleted, the sale and distribution ot the PTC trolley tickets for the entire school has been placed in the boys' hands. ORIGINAL Hi-Y Under the supervision and guidance ot Mr. Frank Bogia, the Qriginal lsli-Y consists of boys who are outstanding in scholastic ability and in extra activities. Assisting the Traffic Squad and ushering at the Revue and Senate Plays have been the job ct this organization.
