The purpose was noT To make mechanics buT To Train The boy Tor man- hood. IT TosTered a high appreciaTion oT The value and The digniTy of inTeIIigenT Iabor. AT The beginning NorTheasT was a manual Training schooI. This new educaTionaI movemenT was originaTed in l885 wiTh The esTabIishmenT oT The CenTraI Manual Train- ing School aT SevenTeenTh and Wood STreeTs. In I890 The NorTheasT Annex was added and in I893 The TirsT class was graduaTed from The NorTheasT Manual Training High School. The opening of The Howard STreeT building was made possible by a Ioan To The Board of EducaTion by Isaac A. Shephard. The original TacuITy was: Lycurgus L. Ford, MaThemaTicsg John L. STewarT, LiTeraTure and American HisToryg George Firmin, Mechanical and Free Hand Drawing lMr. Firmin, The only member oT The original TacuITy of The TirsT year who is sTilI aT NorTheasT, is now Teaching ChemisTryIg William C-3umpherT, wood-work, and William H. OdenaTT, meTal-work. The TirsT principal oT The school was Dr. William L. Sayre. He was assisTed The Tol- Iowing year by Professor John W. Moyer. Finally, in I893, NorTheasT had iTs TirsT oTTiciaI independenT principal, Dr. C. Hanford Henderson, who held This oTTice unTil I896. Up To I9I2, when NorTheasT was made a regular Tour-year high school, There was a Three-year course. Thus iT happens ThaT in I9I3 There was no graduaTing class. The Pioneer Class oT I893 leTT a marlc upon our school ThaT will noT be TorgoTTen. They organized The AThIeTic AssociaTion, and spring and Tall sporTs were held aT STenTon. The campaign was made possible by fhe splendid co-operafion of Mayor Samuel H. Ashbridgep fhe campaign for 'rhe complefion of fhe new school, by Mayor Weaver. The Pioneer Class under fhe leadership of Vincenf B. Brechf inaugurafed fhe Andrew J. Morrison Scholarship Fund and fhe Alumni Associafion raised S6,000, fhe income from which is available for a scholarship fo fhe Universify of Pennsylvania every four years. The officers of fhis firsf class were Presidenf Sidney T. Rosenheim, Firsf Vice- Presidenf George Muhly, Second Vice-Presidenf Walfer S. Cornell, Secre+ary-Treas- urer William C. Ash, Hisforian Vincenf B. Brechf. The faculfy af fhe fime of fheir graduafion was C. Hanford Henderson, John L. Sfewarf, John W. Moyer, Lemuel Whifalcer, Adolph Pfeil, George D. Firmin, William H. Odenaff, William B. Gump- herf, George F. Sfradling, L. L. Ford, Frank Roselle, Walfer Koenig, Jacob Wildemore, William F. Hal, and Thomas Ascough. On January 9. I904, fhe cornersfone of +he new building af Eighfh S+ree+ and Lehigh Avenue was laid. I+ was dedicafed on November I7, I'-705, af which fime Woodrow Wilson, fhen Presidenf of Princefon Universify, made fhe principal address. A pipe organ was insfalled on March I4 of fhe following year in fhe old audiforium, which is now Room I23. The Alumni Associafion was charfered on April 22, l907. The Afhlefic Field af Twenfy-ninfh and Cambria was formally dedicafed Ocfober 3l, I908. The final addifions fo Norfheasf as we know if were finished in I92I. On February I4 Morrison Hall was dedicafed and lafer in fhe same year a wing cor- responding fo if on fhe easf side was dedicafed as Shallcross Hall. Since fhe fime when C. Hanford Henderson was principal, Dr. J. Monroe Willard had fhis covefed posifion from l896 fo l898. ln l898 Norfheasf was honored by ifs mosf influenfial personalify, Dr. Andrew J. Morrison, who remained principal unfil I92O. Dr. George Flowers Sfradling followed him and sfayed af Norfheasf unfil his deafh in l932. He was succeeded by Dr. Theodore S.
