AN HISTORICAL SKETCH OF NORTHEAST HIGH SCHOOL FROM 1890 TO 'I933 The NorTheasT High School was esTabIished in The Tall of I89O wiTh The purpose oT providing The opporTuniTy noT only To pursue The usual high school course in IiTera- Ture, science, and maThemaTics, buT also To receive a Thorough course in drawing, and in The use and appIicaTion of Tools in The indusTrial arTg The obiecT is To educaTe all The TacuITiesg 'The whole boy is puT in The school,' Trained menTaIIy, physically and eThicaIIy. The purpose was noT To make mechanics buT To Train The boy Tor man- hood. IT TosTered a high appreciaTion oT The value and The digniTy of inTeIIigenT Iabor. AT The beginning NorTheasT was a manual Training schooI. This new educaTionaI movemenT was originaTed in l885 wiTh The esTabIishmenT oT The CenTraI Manual Train- ing School aT SevenTeenTh and Wood STreeTs. In I890 The NorTheasT Annex was added and in I893 The TirsT class was graduaTed from The NorTheasT Manual Training High School. The opening of The Howard STreeT building was made possible by a Ioan To The Board of EducaTion by Isaac A. Shephard. The original TacuITy was: Lycurgus L. Ford, MaThemaTicsg John L. STewarT, LiTeraTure and American HisToryg George Firmin, Mechanical and Free Hand Drawing lMr. Firmin, The only member oT The original TacuITy of The TirsT year who is sTilI aT NorTheasT, is now Teaching ChemisTryIg William C-3umpherT, wood-work, and William H. OdenaTT, meTal-work. The TirsT principal oT The school was Dr. William L. Sayre. He was assisTed The Tol- Iowing year by Professor John W. Moyer. Finally, in I893, NorTheasT had iTs TirsT oTTiciaI independenT principal, Dr. C. Hanford Henderson, who held This oTTice unTil I896. Up To I9I2, when NorTheasT was made a regular Tour-year high school, There was a Three-year course. Thus iT happens ThaT in I9I3 There was no graduaTing class. The Pioneer Class oT I893 leTT a marlc upon our school ThaT will noT be TorgoTTen. They organized The AThIeTic AssociaTion, and spring and Tall sporTs were held aT STenTon. The Archive was begun and run by a sTocIc company Tor SI per share, wiTh NORTHEAST HIGH SCHOOL I3
