English Department Implements Emphasis on individual expression and group discussions, combined with less-than-strict adherence to the prescribed, often inadequate, course of study, characterized the English Depart- ment. Members of this department strove for novelty and re- levance in their classes; they utilized enormous amounts of outside material, keeping both themselves and their aides busy typing stencils. Department head Ethel Quickie and Gayle Smith moderated two popular discussion classes—Humanities and Great Books—while Robert Windsor, also the Modern Dance in- structor, encouraged creative self-expression in his Speech and Drama classes. 22
