A Dream For A Decade NORTHEAST HIGH SCHOOL Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Volume XXVII Herlena Hamilton and John Johnson Editors I HAVE A DREAM “I have a dream today ... I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low. The rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight. And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together. This is our hope . . . With this faith we shall be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day ...” —MARTIN L. Still it is always there and it makes the school. But old dreams die and have to be replaced by new ones. This year Northeast ended an old Decade and entered a new one. We found a New Dream ... Arguing, planning, listening (and not listening) to patrons, smoothing ruffled feathers, stretching money, compiling plans and alternate plans—the year passed frantically fast for the school board. (Not pictured is board member W. R. Yinger.) New as principal, but not new to Northeast, Mr. Melvin Todd worked to guarantee Northeast students not merely an education in the traditional sense, but also participation in a learn- ing experience exciting in every sense of the word. Believing that a good ad- ministrator should know the student body, Mr. Todd could often be seen in the halls—talking to students, listen- ing to students. English Department Implements Emphasis on individual expression and group discussions, combined with less-than-strict adherence to the prescribed, often inadequate, course of study, characterized the English Depart- ment. Members of this department strove for novelty and re- levance in their classes; they utilized enormous amounts of outside material, keeping both themselves and their aides busy typing stencils. Department head Ethel Quickie and Gayle Smith moderated two popular discussion classes—Humanities and Great Books—while Robert Windsor, also the Modern Dance in- structor, encouraged creative self-expression in his Speech and Drama classes. 22 Fresh Concepts in Teaching Opposite page: Top left—Anna Beth Heidebrecht: English III, Speech I; Top right—Shirley Castle: Eng. The Council’s most important project was the clean-up campaign in which trees were donated by the various clubs and organizations to plant around the school, and for the patio planned in front of the school in place of the old oilweil. Also this year the Council set up a committee to study the problems of man. The Human Relations Com- mittee, helped the integration plan. Robert Higgins former track and football coach at Douglass and Dungee High Schools has made amazing accomplishments with the this years foot- ball team. The season began with a string of defeats; but the situation began to look more promising when the Vikes made defeat over the Putman City Patriots putting the team one step closer to the coveted Capitol Conference Crown. While playing with great determination and drive in the Homecoming game against the Alva Goldbugs the Norsemen gridsters again tasted vic- tory which qualified them for the big game of the year with the Altus Bulldogs and a rendezvous for the Capitol Conference Title. Although the team was unsuccessful in the Altus game it played with the drive and spirit that is typical of Loyal North- east Viking. The team, under the supervision of Coach Hardeman, did not participate in all of the varsity games but were tactful in all of their challenges. This years Baseball team under direction of Coach Hardeman seeks to make Northeast number 1 in baseball. Although they have seen no competitive action, a long and exciting season has been planned. Many of the players are approach- ing their second year on the team, and possess the quality of spirit that goes into every good ball player. Many hours of hard practice are executed daily to help the players further develop their baseball skills. Edward Hardeman 142 Micheal Shirley makes a desperate dash for home plate. Baseball . . . Karl Robertson awaits a high fly ball. f Monty Barnhill, Henry Wilton, and Mitchel Paxton warm up for a winning season. 143 Swim Team Makes Outstanding Accomplishment Front—Melvin Roberts, Taylor Mullally, Mark Jacoben; Row 2—Charles Jackson, Author Broils, Kenneth Renfrow, Scott Stall, Hall Jacobson, Dennis Yealton, Scott Stoll, Bruce Butcher; Row 3—Ed Slief, Mike Wise, Bill Yinger, Henry Bockhus, Anthony Howell, Tom Inglish, Shelly Davis, Coach Jerry Davis. The swimming team began with a sur- prisingly good start this year with a host of swimmers, and divers led by an excel- lent coach; Mr. Jerry Davis. Placing first in swimming and very strongly in diving, the team made a crushing defeat over Capitol Hill in their first meet. Swimming is a new sport at Northeast this year and should encourage others to take active participation next year. Ed Slief executes a difficult jacknife. 144 Golfers Set Pace for Season of Achievement Sam Chaney (Coach) Our golf team this year is constantly on the move practic- ing at golf courses across the city. Many of the golfers play matches at Hefner, Lincoln Park and various courses in the surrounding area. They leave school early in order to make it to the golf course before nightfall. So the next time you pass a golf course just search around and you will see a Viking diligently improving his golf game. Wrestlers in the heavyweight division deserve special recog- nition for their athletic achievement. Roosevelt Nivins (Coach ) •No longer on team. 146 Cross Country and Track Stride With Pride Back row—Robert Chastain. Martin Neal; Front— Phil Jackson, James Potts, Robert, Robert Williams, William Stuart. Members of the track team have various heats to par- ticipate in. Although many are strictly runners, some broad jump and throw shot put like seniors Robert Chastain, and Martin Neal. This years track coach is Connie Sledge who travels each day from Harding to coach this fine group of athletes. Harriers on the Cross Country team were few but successful in their fields of endeavor. Easy as pie exclaims William Stuart. Senior Martin Neal practices for a record breaking season. Constant Practice Plus Determination equal team success. 147 The Queen of What(?)
