BARN! suPERlN'r:NDlN'r To the Seniors and Students of Northeast: To present accurately and adequately the academic and non-academic phases of life at Northeast, to present the greatest number of students and activities than ever before pictured, and to display content in the most at- tractive manner-all of these combined to form our goal for the '59 Nordlys. From this wedding of the best in purpose, then, has our current theme, The Many Faces of Northeast High, been born. In attempting to promote this idea, the staff has add- ed pictures of more students engaged in more activities, a new multiple-picture beauty section, and sparkling artistic sketches throughout. Though keenly aware of its responsibilities in cover- ing the activities to each student's satisfaction, the staff must acknowledge the fact that some late spring events which occurred after the Nordlys went to press have not been included, a fact which we sincerely regret. To the students who so patiently waited in line to have their pictures made, to the faculty, and especially to the staff members who hurried through the halls to Room 211 throughout the year goes the credit for a job well done. All of you made the 1958-59 Nordlys possible. Thank you 1 Susie Stapp Editor, 1958-59 1959 Nordlys Staff EDITORIAL STAFF Susie Stapp . . . . Shirley Richart. . This is echoed by some two hundred twenty-five seniors this year. Throughout the school year, the seniors participate in many special activities including qmtitude tests and scholarship qualifying tests. Election of the senior class officers is one of the highlights of the fall activities. Ordering gradua- tion announcements, electing graduation speakers, fitting caps and gowns, and preparing for the sen- ior breakfast and graduation occupy most of the seniors' time in the spring. Class sponsor Miss Snedalcer and senior counselor Mr. Krueger aid the seniors in carrying out their activities. The sen- ior class assembly, with every Northeast senior participating in some way, brings down the curtain on the scenes leading up to graduation. With grad- uation we who were once seniors take our place I among the many Northeast alumni. Senior class officers: Standing: Jack Singley, President, Denny Tomlin, Vicepresidentp Seated: Cloetta Grimes, Secretary, Sharry Hansen, Treasurer. 95 NJ C- KV, Famous Faces of the Future. 4? Do you rate high in scholar- ship, character, leadership, serv- ice, and citizenship? These, in addition to a grade average of 4.3, are the basic qualities to become eligible for the Honor Society. Arkandre, Northeast's chapter of the National Honor Society, has 80 to l00 active members each year, but only iuniors and seniors are termed active voting members. Sophomores are probationary mem- bers who may attend the meetings but can take no part in the voting. The Honor Society not only gives special recognition to those who stand high in the above qual- ities, but at the end of each year a boy and a girl whose services to the school have been outstand- ing are chosen by the members, and at the awards assembly each receives ten dollars. This goal was reached by long hours of labor as hard-working students turned salesmen and workmen and sold shampoo during a work-day in which everyone took part. The conference, attended by the first-semester officers, was the annual meeting of the Southern Association of Student Councils. The officers returned home full of new ideas to improve North- east. After-the-game mixers at the Northeast Cen- ter with dancing, topped oft by french fries and sandwiches, were an example of the more suc- cessful projects. Each year the student council sponsors one social activity. This year's HOWDY HOP was one of the best of all times. Students and teach- ers alike turned out to see the crowning of the friendliest boy and girl. A new policy in elections for second semes- ter helped to improve both elections and school activities. Candidates for the election were made to run on a definite platform, thereby enabl- ing the students to select the best possible person. Playing at football games, assem- blies, concerts, and tournaments has been only a portion of the many things done. Many new trappings were added to the band this year, such as white belts, white shoes, new uniforms, and a shattering of tradition with the adding of two mascots to the twirler personnel. Especially for pep assemblies, first chair members from every section have formed a pep band under the direction of student director Hugh Bryant. They do this on their own time with no credit involved. They also serve as background for the twirler acts.
