STUDENT COUNCIL OFFICERS for 1945-1946 Reading from left to right: Jimmy Hawkins, treasurer, Grace Lindley, secre- tary Eldon Seymour, president, Milton Johnson, vice-president, and Marilyn Harris, junior high president. .24 grief .jvliafory of lLe gounci Organized in l937 with Miss Bell as sponsor, the Student Council has made Northeast a richer school because of its many and varied activities, Rules of conduct which were set up by the officers and home room representatives have become traditional, and a true citi- zen of the school holds them sacred. During the early years of the war, the Council organized the whole student body and collected more scrap iron than was required of the school. When everyone was being urged to buy War Stamps and Bonds, the Council set up a schedule and sold them to more than ninety per cent of Northeast pupils, making it possible for us to fly the Schools-at-War flag almost continuously. Looking back, one remembers the paper drives as mountains of effort, but the Council considered that one of their duties and each drive was successful. And the ,Red Cross boxes that were sent out at Christmas time cheered many children in war-torn countries as well as hospitalized service men. After the war ended, the Council continued to sell Victory stamps and were able to finance three hospital units. Arbor Day in 1944 saw the consummation of a tree planting campaign in which the Council was responsible, directly or indirectly, for the planting of l,505 trees, 899 of which were planted by Northeast students. This year, representatives have been se nt to all city council meetings, the state meet- ing at El Reno, to a Junior Red Cross Training conference, and to the Southern Association of Student Councils held in Little Rock. Miss Louise Laing is naw the sponsor. This spring the Council has plans to buy a juke box to be used by the students.
