we .S?0I'g of WOIJAQGZJ Because of the interest shown by the East Side Civic club and the Northeast Chamber of Commerce, Northeast Highschool was built. The site was chosen after a careful survey was made of this section's need and the building, a truly beautiful edifice of white stone, was erected at Thirtieth and Kelley Avenue. School opened September 7, l937, with Mr. J. B. Greene, who had been vice-principal at Harding, as prin- cipal and a faculty of twenty-four picked men and women, eight of whom are still here: Mr. Leon Bruner, Mrs. Za Zelle Gifford, Miss Louise Laing, Mr. Haskell McManus, Mrs. Maude Pittman, Miss Elna Smith, Miss Dorothy MR. J. B. GREENE Snedaker, and Mrs. Maurita Watson. Mr. Busby was there Principal of Northeast to open the doors, at least he was there and would have opened the doors had there been doors to open. You see, the building was not completed until September l9, l937. Approximately 500 students waded through mud lit rained almost every nightl to reach a building whose ceilings and floors were incomplete. They crouched in rooms filled with sawdust and the sound of hammers, but they persevered and now look back with pride on those days. There were fifteen graduates that first year, notwithstanding the fact that school was operated on half-day schedules for several weeks. ln l94O-41, the gymnasium and several classrooms were added, cement driveways and walks were laid, and in l9-43-44 Kelley Avenue was paved. Miss Snedaker can drive up to the door, she doesn't have to walk from Twenty-third and carry her shoes now. The first P-TA meeting was held, September 24, and officers were elected, among whom the still faithful Mrs. Wann Langston was one. There were four pep clubs then: the Norkets, the Norse-Anns, the Greyhounds, and the Ramblers. Mrs. Gifford has been the Norket sponsor for the nine years of its existence. lCould that be the reason that it is the only one of the four on the campus now?l Mr. McManus started a football squad that year that showed its worth by becoming city champions in l94l. No one seems to know just why the squad is called Norsemen and Vikings. The band had 78 members and were handsomely outfitted in uniforms of gray and maroon at an initial cost of S3,400. Choral robes were bought in the fourth year. Miss Smith was the vocal music director. All through the years, the speech department has turned out good speakers and good entertainment. Several students have used their training as a stepping stone to higher attainments. One of the pictures found on the workshop pages shows Mrs. Watson giving signals for classes to change by using o gong on a board. The physical educational classes use the board now. Keeping up with the times, Northeast has an authentic course in preflight in which boys and girls learn to chart a course and to be able to take care of themselves in an airplane. Miss Mattox teaches them every- thing except to fly solo. Recently, correlated classes in history and English have been added, and pupils have learned to know their state through participation. Northeast prides itself on being the only school in the city that has a plastics class. ln the commercial courses there have been many graduates who have gone directly into responsible posi- tions from the knowledge gained here. Mrs. Dorothy Clay has been here since the second year. In I944 the iournalism class published the first Year Book. lt was named Nordlys, meaning Northern Lights.
