H. B. BRUNER Superintendent of Public Schools ROY J. TURNER, President N if R i P l QJQ, Left to right: J. Wiley Richardson, Edd L. Hisel, vice-president, James A. Sinex, and Ira Williams we .S?0I'g of WOIJAQGZJ Because of the interest shown by the East Side Civic club and the Northeast Chamber of Commerce, Northeast Highschool was built. The site was chosen after a careful survey was made of this section's need and the building, a truly beautiful edifice of white stone, was erected at Thirtieth and Kelley Avenue. School opened September 7, l937, with Mr. J. B. Greene, who had been vice-principal at Harding, as prin- cipal and a faculty of twenty-four picked men and women, eight of whom are still here: Mr. Leon Bruner, Mrs. Za Zelle Gifford, Miss Louise Laing, Mr. Haskell McManus, Mrs. Maude Pittman, Miss Elna Smith, Miss Dorothy MR. J. B. GREENE Snedaker, and Mrs. Maurita Watson. Mr. Busby was there Principal of Northeast to open the doors, at least he was there and would have opened the doors had there been doors to open. You see, the building was not completed until September l9, l937. Approximately 500 students waded through mud lit rained almost every nightl to reach a building whose ceilings and floors were incomplete. They crouched in rooms filled with sawdust and the sound of hammers, but they persevered and now look back with pride on those days. There were fifteen graduates that first year, notwithstanding the fact that school was operated on half-day schedules for several weeks. ln l94O-41, the gymnasium and several classrooms were added, cement driveways and walks were laid, and in l9-43-44 Kelley Avenue was paved. Miss Snedaker can drive up to the door, she doesn't have to walk from Twenty-third and carry her shoes now. The first P-TA meeting was held, September 24, and officers were elected, among whom the still faithful Mrs. Wann Langston was one. There were four pep clubs then: the Norkets, the Norse-Anns, the Greyhounds, and the Ramblers. Mrs. Gifford has been the Norket sponsor for the nine years of its existence. lCould that be the reason that it is the only one of the four on the campus now?l Mr. McManus started a football squad that year that showed its worth by becoming city champions in l94l. No one seems to know just why the squad is called Norsemen and Vikings. The band had 78 members and were handsomely outfitted in uniforms of gray and maroon at an initial cost of S3,400. Choral robes were bought in the fourth year. Miss Smith was the vocal music director. All through the years, the speech department has turned out good speakers and good entertainment. Several students have used their training as a stepping stone to higher attainments. One of the pictures found on the workshop pages shows Mrs. Watson giving signals for classes to change by using o gong on a board. The physical educational classes use the board now. Keeping up with the times, Northeast has an authentic course in preflight in which boys and girls learn to chart a course and to be able to take care of themselves in an airplane. Miss Mattox teaches them every- thing except to fly solo. Recently, correlated classes in history and English have been added, and pupils have learned to know their state through participation. Northeast prides itself on being the only school in the city that has a plastics class. ln the commercial courses there have been many graduates who have gone directly into responsible posi- tions from the knowledge gained here. Mrs. Dorothy Clay has been here since the second year. In I944 the iournalism class published the first Year Book. lt was named Nordlys, meaning Northern Lights. acuff ? MR. R. M. GORDON. l.S. During the early years of the war, the Council organized the whole student body and collected more scrap iron than was required of the school. When everyone was being urged to buy War Stamps and Bonds, the Council set up a schedule and sold them to more than ninety per cent of Northeast pupils, making it possible for us to fly the Schools-at-War flag almost continuously. Looking back, one remembers the paper drives as mountains of effort, but the Council considered that one of their duties and each drive was successful. And the ,Red Cross boxes that were sent out at Christmas time cheered many children in war-torn countries as well as hospitalized service men. After the war ended, the Council continued to sell Victory stamps and were able to finance three hospital units. Arbor Day in 1944 saw the consummation of a tree planting campaign in which the Council was responsible, directly or indirectly, for the planting of l,505 trees, 899 of which were planted by Northeast students. This year, representatives have been se nt to all city council meetings, the state meet- ing at El Reno, to a Junior Red Cross Training conference, and to the Southern Association of Student Councils held in Little Rock. Miss Louise Laing is naw the sponsor. This spring the Council has plans to buy a juke box to be used by the students. A very successful Mixer was held and a substantial amount of money was collected to help pay for the instrument. Our mottoed banner loftily waves, Through gracious years we march, we climb, True to our pledge we conquer fear. On! Upward! Yet ever on! Though heavy loads may slow our pace, New fear will vanish os we think Not of the toil, but of success. On! Upward! Yet ever on! Each generation, nearing the top, Flings back its banner to those below, With challenge firm to carry on! On! Upward! Yet ever on! Lift high our banner to the sky, Inspired by praise, but not content, We'll carry on to the glorious goal. -By VIRGINIA NORRlS. I jAe Wafionaf .Honor ociefy The Northeast branch of the National Honor Society was organized May 4, l938. Membership is based on school citizenship, scholarship, serv- ice, leadership, and character. The scholarship requirement is that a 4.3 average be maintained for two consecutive semesters. Election to member- ship is by a council of faculty members, with the principal acting as adviser. Formal initiation was held May 3 for all students who had become eligible this year. 1 gill Scoufd The Mariner Troop, now an all-city group, and the inter- mediates were both organized at Northeast in February, l945. The Mariners are senior high girls and the Intermediates are junior high girls. The purpose of the Girl Scouts is to develop personality, to train girls for community service, and to teach world citizenship. Mrs. T. Burns Westman is the skipper of the Mariners, Mrs. Carl Allsup, the Intermediates. First Row: Mary Fair, Jacquelyn Leach, Patsy Hawkins, Elizabeth Ann Tuttle. These boys take the place of the regular office-holders who step down to give the younger generation a chance to hold the reins of state for one day of each year. The boys are elected by the Student Council and by general student election. 1 if ' unior Qofariana Standing: Harry Ratliff, Jim Murdoch, Sandy Singleton, Glen Traughber. Seated: Tommy Taylor, Eldon Seymour.
