You will treasure these memories for a lifetime. Calandra Norwood 66 What do I do GUYS?? Shawn Norman Calandra Norwood Sery Ouch Thomas Paulson The Legend of the Cap and Gown Long ago, in ancient Greece, when formal education was for the very rich or the very determined, a wise old teacher was approached by a group of noblemen. Our sons have completed their studies and it is time for them to return to their homes and live in the style befitting their station. Tomorrow we will present them at a great banquet. Be sure they are appro- priately dressed in their finest robes. Tom Perry The following day, the banquet hall was filled with royalty dressed in dazzling finery. The great mo- ment came when the students en- tered the banquet hall with’their beloved teacher. A cry of disap- pointment arose from the crowd for, behold, their young men were dressed, not in the garments of the noble, but in simple robes of sack- cloth, each carrying a mortarboard— the mark of a common workman! What is the meaning of this? cried the noblemen. Our sons were to be dressed in their finest garments! The wise teacher replied, But they are! Your sons are dressed in the clothing of the mason, for their destiny is to build. Some, as architects, will build cities, some as teachers, will build lives, some as Hoa Pham physicians, will restore bodies—but all will be builders on the solid foun- dation of knowledge. And to this day all graduates wear a cap and gown—proudly symboliz- ing the value of education, and the fact that they are builders of their future and the future of our world. This television show aired on April 25 at 7:00p.m. and May 8 at 4:00 p.m. Again Congratulations to Lisa and Johannah and to Channel 9 - Stage 9 for a job well done. Clarence M. Although the team did not have a winning record, they played with enthusiasm and aggressivness. Aaron Collier and Steve Johnson provided inside strength, while Louis Cummings, Armond Moore and Eric Hill helped the team with outside shooting. Other key players for the team were Carl Newton, Mark Collins, Shawn Lane, and Tom Anderson. The Vikings made it to Districts and soundly defeated Liberty. In the District Championship, Northeast defeated the East Bears, but they did not beat them without a few nail biting moments. Northeast played a good game against the Park Hill Trojans but came up short in the quarterfinals. It all came down to the f inal seconds of the game. Northeast was down by two points and had an opportunity to tie the game and send it into overtime. With no time left on the clock, Aaron Collier was fouled while going up for the ball after a missed layup. Aaron was sent to the line to shoot two free throws. He made the first one, but missed the second shot. It was a very exciting game and kept the fans on the edge of their seats the whole time. About 40 young men completed the season that started in March and ended at the State meet May 28 at Lincoln University. In the Interscholastic League Championships the varsity team finished 4th out of 9 teams with 92 points. Ryun Middleton was the League Champion in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs. His point total for the meet was 30. Brad Grosstephan wan the 800 Meter Dash setting a personal record of 1:58.15. Other noteworthy accomplishments were: 3200 Meter Relay setting a meet recond at the Northwest Missouri State University Imvitational. Team members were Tom Anderson, Mike Debrevi, Brad Grosstephen and Ryun Middleton. This same quartet also won the 3200 Meter Trophy at the Blue Valley High School Invitational. Ryun Middleton took 4th place honors in the Jim Ryun Mile run at the Kansas Relays. His time of 4:21.1 was one of the fastest times in the K. C. Metro area during the 88 season. The Boy’s Freshman and Junior Varsity teams both finished 4th place in their meet held at Southeast High School on May 3. This was quite an experience for everyone since the entire meet was conducted in a rainstorm. Coach Ray Wade was very pleased to have Coach Bill Kanan once again helping the team. Coach Frank Ault, another added plus for the team, showed great patience and wisdom. The three worked well together helping the team achieve a high level of success. The 1989 team will be even stronger with the return of many talented underclassmen. A League Championship is definetly possible. Most of the team will be participating in 152 either Cross Country or Football during the fall. Homecoming this year was def- k.inf in the Vikin8 favor. Coach Zuber lead the Vikings to a wopping victory over East. The final score was 20-14. Homecoming festivities started with the burning of the bear in the home football field and i continued with a enthusiastic parade that evening. During half-time, school support for Notheast continued by a dynamic performance by our marching band. This years theme was “Wipe Out”, and that’s exactly what East did!
