2177mmWMWMIWIIMII 3O 00 Mid-Continent Public Library 15616 East Highway 24 Independence. MO 64050 This year our staff has chosen a great guy for the dedication, Mr. Glenn Spillman. The staff this year has been through a lot. And through it all Mr. Spillman has been there to give us the extra push we all needed in the right direction. Whether it was a yell session or just to talk to us about being in the halls so much. But he,s been there. Not too many people could handle all of the pressure, anger, frustration, craziness, and above all the nerve pills he had to have taken all year. What we are trying to say is, llThanks Spillman for being you. In case you didnlt know it, in case we didnlt show it, we know you didnlt blow it! The Nor,Easter Staff ' 1984-85 N ORhEASTER STAFF This years Nor,Easter Staff wishes next years staff and future ones all of the luck, patience and imagination they could ever dream of needing to help make their book one to be re- membered forever. g, kg, 4 S T N E T N O C 242745.63, TABLE OF Clubs 8: Organizations Introduction Freshman J uniors Faculty Sports Activities .7 -.. .v...:..;- . ..;'..-- ..-u..;.... . W I onws Left. to right: Mr Brov J anlce Hayes, Toung Brewer mot shownl Stephen Brown,Jr. Yearbook Staff: How do you feel the 1984-85 school year went compared to last yearis? Mr. Brown: It is very difficult to compare school years unless actual statistics are reviewed. At this point, the statistical data for the current year are incomplete. However, it appears that attendance has improved. With this improvement also comes overall grade point averages and improved test scores. In addition, the Student Adjustment Center, has caused a considerable reduction in out of school suspensions. General classroom behavior, however, has not shown the improvements we had hoped for as a result of assertive discipline efforts. Primcipal One of the brightest spots, among many, was the formation of the Student Response Team. This organization, which is comprised of student leaders who represent a cross section of our student population, has as its primary functions the mediation of possible problems before they escalate, and resolving conflicts between groups and individuals. This promises to be a key organization for the coming years. Yearbook Staff. What improvements would you like to see made next year? Mr. Brown: Obviously, the goals and objectives identified in our school improvement plan represent those things our school and community feel need improving. Many of which are mentioned above. There is presently being developed a partnership arranged with a private organization, which would provide we hope, up to sixty jobs for qualified students in the 11th and 12th grades next year. These jobs are designed so as to be a permanent typefconsequently, special classes and on-the-job training programs will be designed to enhance student success. Most importantly, I feel the best fact is that students will be able to see a direct relationship between class work and the world of work. Yearbook Staff: Do you have any comments about the Class of $5, ? Mr. Brown: The Senior Class of I985 has many outstanding individuals. By companson With other district schools the eight students presentl enrolled 1n the UM.KC Math 7. .c1ence programs . ave made outstandlng progress in this college credited program. Many Within the class, have made outstandmg progress both academically and athletically. There appears to be an unusually large number of seniors who are goal oriented and are working toward their oal, whether it IS V college, military, or entry mto the wor force. y comparison, onlY after the June 3, commencement exercises W11 I be able to say for sure what I feel the maturity level is of the class, based on how well the ceremony goes. Despite their need for some-one with real size, the Vikes did an outstanding job on the court. The teamis competiveness, hustle, and style of play was not reflected by thier record. They finished with only 9 wins against 17 losses, but in nearly half of the games they lost this seasons, the Vikes lost to their opponents by 4 points or less, with 4 of in overtime. To make up for their lack of size, this year Vikes had to relay on thier speed, quickness and DeAmos Rimson perimeter shooting to defeat their opponents. Even though they appeared to play without enthusiasm and confidence, they did play with lots of determination and pride. These traits were ignited and led by Coach Charles Sanger, who served this year with a faithful, devoted, and valuable service and effort all his own. Coach Sanger says, itDespite this years shortcomings, he is looking forward to next year,s season, when he will begin working with this years talented JV Squad?
