LXVIII 1 THE BEST OF TIMES 2 During this past year we have been through many ups and downs. Not only in school but throughout the world as well. We tend to overlook the bad times and rely on the good to ease the pressure. We have decided that this years theme should be the song, “The Best of Times”. This song, written by Styx, expresses the love and trust we can have in someone even when the world is turning upside down. Tonight's the night we'll make history Honey you and I And I'll take any risk To tie back the hands of time. And stay with you here tonight. I know you feel these are the worst of times I do believe it's true When people lock their doors and hide inside. Rumor has it, it's the end of Paradise. But I know if the world just passed us by, Baby I know, I wouldn't have to cry. The Best of Times are when I'm alone with you. Some rain, Some shine. 3 4 We'll make this a world for two. Our memories of yesterday Will last a lifetime We'll take the best, forget the rest And someday we'll find These are the Best of Times. The headlines read These are the worst of times I do believe it's true I feel so helpless like a boat against the tide I wish the summer winds could bring back Paradise. But I know If the world turned upside down Baby I know You'd always be around. “c Almo Music Corp. Stygian Songs Reprinted by permission. All Rights Reserved.” W e hope that you feel what the words express. Now as we go into the future, it will be filled with memories of yesterday. 5 TABLE OF CONTENTS SPORTS .... 126 QUEENS.......103 FRESHMEN ...112 CLUBS ORGANIZATIONS .160 IN THE BACK SOPHOMORES ... 88 CALENDAR OCTOBER: 9 - Homecoming NE vs. East NOVEMBER: 11 - Parent teacher conference 18 - Powderpuff football 26, 27 - Thanksgiving 8 DECEMBER: 1 - First basketball game 24 - Jan. 4 - Winter vacation 25 - Christmas JANUARY: 22 - End of first semester 29 - Vikings Varieties FEBRUARY: 6 R.O.T.C. As a class, I am especially proud of the Class of “82” because we came together to Northeast Senior. As you move now from the confines of this school, I sincerely hope that the educational and social experiences gained here will manifest immediately into success, regardless of your chosen field of endeavor. On behalf of the staff, I commend you for the accomplishment of this milestone. I hope the friendships garnered will be lifelong, and that the memories reflect only the “Best of Times”. Stephen Brown Jr. PRINCIPAL 12 VICE PRINCIPALS Mr. Cariddi: Wishes more students would work harder and care more for their school. He feels that you yourself, as a student, make these “The Best of Times”. He wishes that every student would realize that these are your best years and that there's always a way to develop your potential to the fullest, if there is the desire. Mr. McCormick: “While other schools enrollments are down, Northeast's enrollment is up. The achievement level here at Northeast is improving. While other schools need security guards and paid policeman Northeast doesn't. If he had his choice to work at any school he would still choose Northeast.” Mrs. McKinney: In the woman's point of view, the school is very “lovely”. She is disturbed about the truancy, lack of interest, and class cutting. She feels that once she learns more names the students will realize she cares. She enjoys the school throughly and hopes that she will be here for sometime. 13 June Buchanan Claretha Shumate COUNSELORS OFFICE PERSONEL Lois Baker Violet Salyer Esther Kullman Gailya Collins Shirley House 14 OFFICE HELP 1st Row- Kylah Dennison, Jackie Love, Deborah Smith. 2nd Row- Sharon Dodson, Theresa Lewis, Ann Roberts. 3rd Row- Rhonda Barrowman, Lori Dake, Mary Arroyo, Staci Hulse, Cecilia Martin, Denise Yslas, Debbie Snyder. Yet as we look back it seems like only yesterday. Even throughout the summer it didn't seem real. Were we really going to be “Seniors” this year, or is it a dream? Well, it wasn't a dream. It did happen. When we came, that first day of school, we were so cool. “Hay bud this Senior how about you?!” You bet we were Seniors, about to become‘82’ alumni. The year couldn't go by any faster. All we could think of was “Party!” Well we did our work, like good Seniors. Gaining the remaining credits and scholarship points that we needed. While driving our counselors crazy trying to get into the right college at the right time. Studying and taking the necessary tests. We pushed all year and made our best effort. Taking the losses in stride, and extending the good times. Oh so many good times. Home Coming; the game and the dance; Senior pictures; fittings for cap gowns the family, maybe next year And our first Senior New Valentines Day Dance with the “Sweetie” Christmas with at college. A night to make lasting memories, which will never fade away. It's time for Baccalaureat, the day before. But now it's time. And like alway's the Best is saved for last. GRADU ATION! This year may have come and gone fast. But will never be forgotten. And surely not fast forgotton, as fast as it came. We at NoFEaster wish to all graduating Seniors the fondest of memories, here at Northeast. And always the Best of Times throughout your years of maturity, yet to come. 25 £ ni r Officers President. Try to summarize your high school years, but keep it simple. It's not easy is it? You start with one thought, but soon another comes to mind and clouds your thinking. With each new thought you become more and more confused about what you had originally wanted to say. It becomes complicated and you can't say what you really feel and want to say. Well, sit at ease and listen to this students summarization. 34 Lori Gull Andrea Hernandez Kim Holst Glenice Horn Staci Hulse I JU5T LOVE- BEIN6 A 11 ■ Saundra H unton Angela Inselman 5ENiOR_' “...All all I enjoyed the challenges I shared with my fellow classmates and friends. Achieve success, learn from each lesson taught, using my school time wisely...” Is this what you wanted to say, or at least close to what you would say? If only our many other fond memories would lay at rest. And wait for the conversation of reminiscence, where they all shall come to life, once more. Allowing us the time we need, and want for Partying! “This is our last year. It's for parties, concerts and dances... extracurricular activities. 'Kansas here we come!'” Granted, that is a part, a large part of Senior life. But that shouldn't be all of it. There's so much more. This last year of high school is so confusing, and very fast. Suddenly, or so it seems, we must choose the path leading to everyone is so obliged to tell us so. College? U.S. Services? Work? or, 'bum out,' for a couple of more years. No! In years before, the Juniors had a hold on the Seniors and they some how would always accomplish rough victories over the Seniors. This year the tables were turned! The Juniors consistent practices for the game still wasn't enough to over come the Seniors, who had only a few half way organized practices. The Seniors finally pulled through a victory. It was a very close game, both teams played very well and the most important thing is that is was fun and the Seniors won. D.B. 62 ATTACK! CHARGE! LeAnne what happened to your arm? What is our next killer plan? LOOK! Rhonda's rear. Oh No! She got me. 63 I thought the students did an excellent job in performing the mock weddings. The classes got serious about what they were doing and it all came off extremely well. A lot of hard work was done behind the scenes by students and concerned teachers. A very special thanks goes to Mrs. Brenda Jackson for her time and help in challenging the students to make their 1982 weddings the most memorable occasion. Also, special thanks to Mrs. Oats from Sherri Bridals; Mr. Piver from American Formal Wear; Mr. Barbe from Barbe Florist and the Northeast Assembly of God. We were extremely pleased with their services. ALMOST A RAINBOW Fill your heart with beauty, and beauty will come to you. Fill your thoughts with love, and love surrounds you. Seek always truth and it shall be yours. For as you believe are all things made manifest unto you. Walk carefully among my dreams, for they are small...and easily crushed. How often we are listening to yester- day, when today stands ready to speak How often we knell to our weakness... when we might rise to our strength. Often happiness calls, but we are too busy to answer. Love is the Rainbow of each life. THE Time cannot touch two hearts that truly love. WEDDINGS MARRIAGE IS... Marriage is never having to say your sorry or regret whom you married. It is a wonderful time in life if you choose with your heart instead of your mind. Marriage is finding a trust worthy man whom is intelligent and a responsible person for the both of you. Someone who takes the same oath and feels the same way about you as you do them. Marriage is a relationship which last till eternity and the bond between the two of them will never be broken. 64 65 Viking Varieties was a tremendous success this year dispite several obsticles. This years theme was “I'm Coming Out” and it was sung by Vivian Wilson backed up by a stunning dance, choreographed by Brenda Shepard and William Cann. The student director was Shannon Clark, the asst, director was Rosie Johnson and the tech, crew was under the directorship of Kerry Eikenberry and Shawn Geabhart. The main problem we experienced was the lack of students with ability to play musical instruments. As a result, for the first time, we were forced to allow singing acts with records as the background music. We are hoping that since Mr. May (our band director) has arrived that this problem will be eradicated next year. Dispite heavy rain, we had a huge turn-out. Thanks to all who supported us! See ya next year, Mrs. T. Gilyard. 66 The Sweetheart dance seemed to be a success, for everyone enjoyed themselves once they found the place. The place being the Party House. It was a new dance room that the Y-Teens tried. At mid-way through the dance the king and queen and princes and princesses were crowned. It was a time of surprise, fun and a few laughs. As the night went on and the fun continued, finally everyone dispersed and went their own way. ART I I Every- one should go on a BTW trip at least once. Hopefully as long as there are sponsors like Spillman and Kelly, students will have the chance to go camp out and get away from the crazy city. They may even see killer cows and or copperheads. BTW is a great way to learn to work with other people to get things done. Setting up camp, fixing and eating meals together makes it like a family group, of course we all trusted eachother. When you fall backwards from a platform in a large tree and all that is between you and the ground are a dozen pair of arms, you learn to trust the owners of those arms. I intend to go on the next Bound To Win excursion I had a wonderful time on my virgin trip, so the next one should be even better! I hope to see more new faces along with those of us who have been. Jr v hr L32l Pi Cross-country is one of the most rewarding sports there is. It means working out twice a day in the stifling heat of summer. It means running 13 hilly miles around Lake Jacomo and then going swimming and barbecuing with the team afterwards. It means a lot of sit-ups, push- ups, hill workouts, and lonely miles, but also alot of good times and togetherness with the team. It is the satisfaction of pushing yourself to the limit again and again, sometimes coming in 1st place and sometimes 99th, but always giving it your all. The girls team this year was one of the most successful girls cross-country teams in the history of Northeast. Individual improvement, and all runners returning from last year's team helped to make it a good season. The team won their first trophy this season by taking first place in the Westport Invitational. The ne t trophy was a second place at the Miege Invitational. Although it was a good season, the team was plaqued by many bad breaks. For instance, the Bonner Springs Invitational. The team missed beating Ottawa, the Kansas State Champs, by one point through a tie-break decision for first place between Elise Jones and the number one Ottawa girl. At the Interscholastic League Championship City meet N.E. came in 2nd-only two points behind Southwest, the defending champs for the past five years. Elise Jones won the race, but in the process received a stress fracture in her foot that put her out for the rest of the season. Suzanne Jones followed with 3rd, Denise Wheller 9th, Kitty Sayers 10th, and Leanne Spencer 11th. Sharon Hundley won the J.V. race, leading the J.V. to victory and the first place trophy for the 2nd year in a row. Other members of the J.V. team were Shanea Bell, Lucy Cline, Janet Miller, Ann Roberts, and Shelly Middle- ton. At the District meet, the N.E. girls placed 12th out of more than 40 teams present,. Although the team did not qualify for the State Meet, Suzanne Jones qualified and place 32nd in the State Meet out of 180 runners. This was the 2nd highest finish in State Competition for a N.E. girl. As for the boy's team five out of the seven runners on last year's Varsity team graduated, but this year's team still managed to put in a good showing. The two returning Varsity runners were Billy Forest and Danny Spencer. Billy, though plaqued with many injuries, still ran some great races and placed 5th in the City Meet. Danny Spencer was in good form and won the City Meet hands down. The Varsity boys team placed second in the City Meet behind Southwest. Other team members were Darrell Salinas (7th), Darron Jacobs (8th), Pat Waller, Art Esteban. The J.V. team placed second behind Van Horn. The members were Robert Ojeda, Joe D'Angelo, Victor Pena and Javier Fonseca. Danny Spencer was the only Northeast boy that qualified for Regionals in the District Meet. The Northeast Cross- country teams were represen- ted well in the Fall Sports Banquet. Eight runners from Northeast were All-Stars, meaning they placed in the top 10 in the City Meet. Four runners were girls. Darrell Salinas is the only Freshman from Northeast to ever be an All-Star. Danny Spencer was awarded the Most Valuable (Male) runner in the League for the second year in a row. Elise Jones was awarded the Most Valuable (Female) runner in the League. Coach Ray Wade won Coach of the Year for the second time and it was an award he really deserved. The cross-country team is really proud of their coach and is greatly indebted to him for all the time and energy he invested in them. Captain Donna Cox and Co- captain Andrea Hernandez stated that “With coach pushing us we learned to work for what we wanted and still have fun.” She showed us how to come together .unite as a team, so that everyone was not out for themselves, but we were for each other. The team is very proud of their accomplishments. They took 1st place in the Interscholastic League Tournament; 3rd place in the UMKC Tournament; they were co-champions of the Interscholastic League; and last of all, the team won 1st place in the district rounds. District was something special for the team. Northeast appears to be the only volleyball team to ever win a district championship in the history of the Interscholastic League. To many of the girls on the team, this was a great accomplish- ment and they deserve to feel proud of themselves. D.C. The Northeast Volleyball Team sure has something to be proud of. Just look at the trophies! One for 1st place in the Interscholastic League Tournament, another for 3rd place in the UMKC Tourna- ment, and yet another for co- champions of the League and another for the great accomplishment of winning the 1st place plaque in district and finally one of the most honorable ones, the Coach of the Year Award, which was received by coach Rita L. Mabin for her outstanding work with the team. The team worked very hard to earn these trophies and they enjoyed doing it. There are not many teams who can say that they went 14 and 0 before losing a game. In winning the trophies, many things were accom- plished that are not visible. The team met every team goal set before the season began. Three members of the Viking Volleyball team were chosen for the Interscholastic League All-Star Team (Teresa Rojas, Chris Garrett, and Andrea Hernandez). Records were also broken as we accom- plished these goals. Teresa Rojas broke many of the old records to set new ones and this made the team feel good. The team started practice on August 17th to prepare themselves for the up-coming season. In their record, it can be seen that they worked hard and that is how they became successful. Coach Mabin told the team repeatedly through- out the summer and season, “It takes practice to make perfect and the more practice you can get the better you are.” It really appears to have paid off for the volleyball team. Although our record wouldj indicate that we had a poor season, we played well in| the majority of our games and were rarely beaten bad. We had a tough defense, and offense that played together until the end. Our new head coach and staff jhelped.to the best of their ability, the performance of our team. The 1981 season saw a number of new faces, the majority underclassmen, contribute to the team. Although we did not have a Freshman program, most of the underclassmen played on the junior varsity team. The underclassmen are the building blocks of a future successful team. Thus they are encouraged to come out in their Freshman year to gain as much experience as possible to later benefit the Northeast football team. Support is essential in any sport to promote a team's victory. Support this year for ou,r football team was pretty good. Many students and faculty members attended the games and supported the team whether we won or lost. This kind of support is much needed when we play powerhouses that have a large number of fans. No one should judge the vikings by their past records or teams and say “Well, they always lose.” This sometimes may be true but is contrary to school spirit which is needed at Northeast to encourage and support all athletic activities to fine and successful seasons. Danny King Reggie Mott Danny King. Kenny Johnson, and Reggie Mott were voted Honorable Mention in the Interscholastic league Kenny Johnson was also voted All Metro. Congradu la lions to all three of them!! The program as a whole is starting to improve. Despite the win-loss record, the team had a pretty good year. They were very competitive in all of their games and the offense was very good. Coach Harris did a good job working with the team, and if more people turn out for the team next year we will have a winning program. School spirit is a major aspect in the enthusiasm of the team, and more students and faculty should become more involved with the team. They practiced very hard and if more people realized this and supported the team, who knows what could happen. KJ. Granted, a lot of attention is drawn toward these energetic people, for they are the ones who either help make special events take place or who perform for you on stage or at games or other special events. But before these events can take place many hours of hard work must be put in. Many of these clubs meet twice a week. Some even begin during the summer. You must remember that these meetings take place outside of school hours. Many hours are spent perfecting the programs that these clubs produce. Not only does it take time and effort, but some involve physical practice. Yes, plenty of sore muscles and sweat have been poured out for your viewing entertainment. As the Poms, Cheerleaders, and Vikettes begin getting their muscles limbered and in shape throughout the summer and they must stay in shape all year. The Band members are constantly trying to improve on their musical talents, sometimes accompanying the choir who not only perform for our pleasure, but also for the public’s pleasure as well. There are still other groups who are not interested in entertaining for a moment, but they have a long term effect on the students. Their purpose seems to involve making school conditions more tolerable for the students. And some where down the ling releasing some of the tension placed on the teachers. These organizations would include the Student Council and Round Ball. Then there’s the National Honor Society which is more interested in individuals getting themselves prepared for higher education, and a fulfilling life. But then, what is wrong with that? And after you know how to take care of yourself, you can join Mr. Kelly and help the environment by joining the Ecology Club. But if you’re one for sentiment, Mrs. Gilyard and her gang will take care of you. They are constantly keeping couples together during the holidays whether it be Halloween or Christmas. Oh, but don’t be fooled. These kids don t do all of this alone, they’ve got help. So let us not forget them, the sponsors. Nor all of the time, money and work that they give. Many times there are late hours, weekends, and the relentless abuse of their followers. Now let’s give them a little of the recognition which they truly deserve. It just wouldn't be Christmas without Their harmonyously soft “Silent Night”. They're always just waiting for a chance to break out in song, excuse me again Mr. Cariddi. What Car Wash! And, “the apology”? How about our paper drive and our big check for all of those papers? All of us swore up and down that the next time we would contribute in a paper drive it would have to snow in July! Our early morning round-up in front of school. And the sisterly love of Julie Tressa. Tressa chasing Julie, laughing at her etc... Well we finally made it to camp. And what an experience. All of the tollerance and patience whichmany of us lost at one time or another. But in the end it seemed to bring us closer. The headaches we got from trying to remember everything, and the aching bones and muscles. Taking turns giving messages, and later freezing at night. Being late because of brading certain peoples long hair. We had tuff competition but we brought home some accomplisments. We didn't work as hard as we did for nothing. If only things could have stayed instead of slip away. Though it may be disappointing at times hopefully our panes will bring back happy memories when we were together, and when all of us cared. We were one “Heck of a Squad!” 178 179 180 «ft This year is the first year in many that Northeast has had a specialty squad. Just what a Specialty Squad? Well, the Specialty Squad is a division of the Cheerleaders that is designed to represent the school, and help promote, and show spirit at all girls athletic events. A Specialty Squad has been needed desperately here at Northeast for some time. Especially, since girls sports has become more popular. The Cheerleaders have always been required to go to all boys athletic events. Although, it may be difficult for some to understand, cheerleaders, like everyone else, have homework and other obligations. Which make it very hard to attend all boys, and girls events. This years Specialty Squad has proven successful in releaving some of this pressure. These girls have put in many hours of effort. Practicing constantly to learn the cheers, and to keep improving themselves. The squad was a great success and has done an excellent job in representing the school and promoting school spirit. Denise Yslas 181 This year the girls attended t NCA Pom Pon J clinic at St. Cloud, MN which proved to be a very successful year. The girls were awarded several 1st place awards, and more. Being: 1 st place 'trophy, for best Home Routine. 1st pla trophy, for best overall squad at camp. 34 Blue Ribbons, awarded the , Megaphone, for being voted j friendliest squad.
