Robert L. Nutt | x' Student Council President 6 SttUMi CJuli fiduuitia Soadtu CLwm Contmti S CUHds What is a senior? Someone who has had the guts to stick out 720 very harrassing days which constitute four years of high school. A senior is one who can look down on the lowly freshmen, immature sophomores, and naive juniors. Being a senior in the class of 1967 was meeting Liliana, the foreign exchange student from Argentina—or possibly, as it was for many C.O.E. seniors, it was attending classes half a day and working the other half. Finally, being a senior, meant wearing the class ring, going to the Homecoming game, wearing sweatshirts on sweatshirt day, attending the prom, and, at last, the long awaited night— graduation. To be in another country is a great experience, but the main point is to share in the daily life of the country. And this is my experience here: living with an American family, attending an American school, and participating in American activities. I knew many things about the United States, but it is very different to live with them. When I first arrived here it was summer and the weather was very hot. I had lived on the coast in Argentina, but I adapted quickly to going to the pool instead of the beach. I learned about drive-ins; sitting in a car, asking for a hamburger and a coke was strange for me. Also all the machines fascinate me. I think it is funny when you can put a dime in a coke ma- chine and get one instead of having to go someplace and ask for it. I was very anxious to see school start. You can't im- agine the first day here, not knowing the language very well, just going to classes and hearing the teachers talk and talk. I felt like I was in another world. I wanted to run away as fast os possible, but the understanding of the teachers and students made me feel very good. Everyone was so nice and lovely to me. The school spirit soon mode me feel as if I had been going to Northeast all my life. The football and basketball games excited me. I just loved the assemblies where everyone cheered and clapped. I think teenagers must love school time because they have so much to enjoy. I found my American family very warm, hospitable, and ready to offer anything they had. My family is just great. They share everything and make me feel in'1, like a daughter. And the dog, Arfie, understands me— even when I talk in Spanish. This year will be unforgettable for me, because of the many new things, places, people, but most of all because I was at Northeast. This is o great school with great peo- ple. I hope in the future to see some of you in Argentina or when I come here and remember all the great mo- ments that I have had in Northeast. Much love and good luck in the future, 53 Fa Mfof What is a faculty? It is a couple of bright, hustling coaches that produced a winning football team at Northeast. A faculty is a chemistry teacher who has his favorite joke to begin the class, or a quiet, reserved physics teacher who miraculously finds time to be Athletic Manager, Student Council Sponsor, Junior Class Sponsor, and also a very fine teacher. Next a faculty is a team of teachers, the Kellys, working side-by-side, a southern accented English teacher from Big D , or a history teacher who can put the fear of God in you or scare it out of you, or a physi- cal education teacher who just loves to ski. This is a faculty! 57 FRANCIS GATES Senior Counselor, B.A., Bob Jones University, M.A. Central Missouri State College, graduate study, U.M.K.C. Just cross your legs and whistle Dixie. During this short two years, he became known for his strong voice and his strict disciplinarian procedure. But those who knew him personally found him to be a capable, enthusiastic, and humorous man who was devoted in working for the school. Would you believe that this staunch disciplinarian in his senior year at Northeast was voted Jolly Good Boy for the senior ballot? In fact, Mr. Cloverdyke was an all around student. He was a member of the varsity basket- ball team (which, incidently, was co-champions of the city that year) a member of the track team, student council, and Courier. Thus, it is with sad regrets that we say goodbye to Mr. Cloverdyke. As a student at Northeast, he was an all- around boy; as a member of the faculty, he was an ef- ficient, well-liked administrator. $cuhu %nm %i. 2 uuujk Heath Urn- 'T'mufld Would you like to go o few rounds with our vice-principal, Mr. Reneau? Our advice is: don't! As o youth he proved himself physically fit by both boxing in the Golden Gloves tournament and wrestling on a high school team. Now he shows himself to be fit by camping with his family in the mountains every spring and fall. But our vice-principal's timeisnotentirelydevoted to condition- ing himself. Besides putting in many long hours for Northeast, he is a member of Phi Del Kappa and the School Master's Club. Next time you stay late after school, look into the gym and there you will probably find Mr. Reneau working out so he may be able to tackle any problem. The fall of 1966 brought a change in Northeast's administration. Replacing Mr. Harry Cloverdyke, as vice-principal, was Mr. Dwight Heath. Since students hove a way of dubbing all teachers, Mr. Heath has become Dick Tracy of Northeast. Before coming to Northeast he was vice-principal at Lincoln Junior and had taught math at East for five years before going to Lincoln. He is well qualified for the position at Northeast, having his Bachelor of Science degree from C.M.S.C. and a Master's degree and teaching certificate from U.N.K.C. We of Nor'easter staff are pleased to welcome Mr. Heath to Thou Dear . To the Sophomores it is the fright- ening newness of the Senior Building, added freedom, more responsibility, mountains of homework, and monstrous teachers. Along with a few scattered Freshmen, it is being the underdogs” of the school. To the Juniors it is the jolliest high school year. There is no newness to scare them or responsibility to load them down. It is having American History with Mr. Day, and chemistry with Mr. Calvert. It is electing class officers, ordering Senior rings, and going to the Junior-Senior Prom. To Nor'easters this year it meant having the best football and basketball teams Northeast has had in years and a revival of school spirit. In the fall Northeast experienced a topnotch football team under Coach Don Cobb. Winter and early spring brought Coach Bill Durham and the basketball team many startling victories. Placing third in football interscholastic league play and second in the Park Hill Basketball Tournament made school spirit soar to heights previously unknown. We want to express our appreciation to each of the coaches and every boy who participated in football, basketball, track, swimming, golf, or tennis. Thank you for doing an excellent job. ROW ONE Dov« Busch, Corl Piper, Marty McCollum, John Deatheroge, Tony Ciccio, Steve Myers, Tom Gialde, Ron Snyder. ROW TWO: Ben Hart, Joe Possontino, Steve Edwards, Ron King, Dwayne Milligan, Jim Allinder, Bub Barnes, Rick Finter. ROW THREE: Doug Woller, Eddie Coates, Bill Brohmon, Magic words, such as Coach Cobb and Coach Durham, floated around Northeast as the 1966 football machine prepared for a highly questionable season. This duo of magicians produced a winning football team which tied for fourth place in the interscholastic conference. As the season opened, the machine recovered a fum- ble and was able to score on the first play of the game. Northeast started its attack and never let it slacken throughout the four quarters of play. When the rampage was complete, the Vikes hod scored six touchdowns and one touchback to lash St. Pius, 40 to 0, in a non-confer- ence game. The victory-minded Viking ship flattened the Paseo Pirates with a score of 7 to 0. The Vikings were riding high as the third game of the season come. Northeast held up well, but the Southwest Indians played for keeps as they unloaded their heavy artillery in the final minutes of play to overcome Northeost, 20 to 17. Being beaten by the inter-scholastic champions, South- west, in the final minutes of play didn't detour the Vik- ings from bouncing back soundly defeating the Southeast Knights, 31 to 19. Due to injuries from previous games, the mighty Central Eagles defeated us, 52 to 13. The highlight of any football season is homecoming. The Vikes rose to this occasion by skinning the East Bears, 56 to 0. With this overwhelming victory behind them, the Vikes declared open war on Manual, defeating them, 26 to 0. In the next game, Northeast fought hard to record the fourth shut-out of the season against Westport, with the final score of 41 to 0. Zone Zuber, Curt McDaniels, Jim Atkinson, Donny McMahon. ROW FOUR: Assistant Cooch Durham, Mike Martin, Robert Collins, Steve Mizer, Pot Man- ard, John Noret, Eddie Saunders, Cooch Cobb. }ootl)dt Northeast's powerful threat was stopped in the last two games by Van Horn and Lincoln. Because of the de- pleted squad due to injuries to such key men os Steve Mizer, Tom Gialde, Jim Atkinson, Dwayne Milligan, and Dave Busch, Northeast was badly lacking the reserve power needed to defeat these two teams. Northeast fought hard, despite the injuries, holding Van Horn to 26 points; Lincoln to 41. From all sides of the picture the support has improved and this has done much to raise the spirit that was lacking in the past. That dark cloud that once lurked over North- east has faded off into the distance and a bright outlook is forecast for the Vikings. Soom FOOTBALL SCORES NE 40 ST. The Northeast Vikings opened the 1966-67 basketball with three returning lettermen, one being a starter from the year before. The Vike's were short on size, experience, and overall speed but they were long on desire and pride. Northeast lost their opening game to NKC but bounced back the next week to place third in the William Jewell Tournament by defeating Lee's Summit and Liberty. Follow- ing the Jewell Tourney the teamlosttheirnext three games in succession to Liberty, Lillis and Paseo. After the Paseo defeat the Vikes wheeled to five straight victories which gave them a fourth place finish in the Interscholastic League Tournament and a 2-0 record in league play at the time. After four successive losses to league teams the Vikes knocked off highly favored Southeast 54-48 in one of the key gamesoftheyear.Fromthisgameon the team seemed to jell-playing their best basketball of the season. During this span the Vikes knocked off Fort Osage (66-48) in a non-league game. Very little attention was given the Vikes as they entered the Oak Park Regional, butthings happened. First, the Suburban Seven Champs, Park Hill, met defeat at the hands of the Vikes by a score of (56-53). Next the Vikes knocked off Lincoln, who had previously defeated Northeast in League play and who ceded second in the Tourney, 65-64 in a thrilling come-from-behind victory. The upset-minded Vikes were thwarted in their attempt for the Regional Championship, losing to De La Salle 53-78. This second place finish was the climax of a successful basketball campaign. Thus ended a highly successful season for Northeast. The Vikes tied for sixth in League play (3-6) and ended the season with 11 winsand 12losses. High lights of the season were (1) knocking off Southeast (2) third place finish in the William Jewell Tourney (3) fourthplacefinish Interscholastic League Tourney and (4) a surprising second place finish in the Oak Park Regional. I was proud to be a part of the basketball program at Northeast. The determination, desire, and pride exhibited during this season are something I will long remember. I only hope this is just the beginning and not the end of this new found pride and school spirit. The One-Hundred Girls' Club is so named becouse it con- sists of ten girls from ten high schools in the Kansas City area. The girls are chosen on a basis of class rank, par- ticipation in school activities, and leadership. The members from Northeast are: Linda Anderson, Judy Jackson, Cheryl McElhose, Donna Miller and Judy Zaun, seniors. The juniors are Terry Cover, Paula Holler, Kathy Ramey, Mary Row, and Eldonna Sides. Although they have no school activities the club sponsors several city-wide meetings. The first is a brunch held during the Christmas vacation. Usually the club visits one college a year. This year the trip was to the University of Kansas. The tour included lunch in the Student Union, a trip through the three freshman dorm, and a bus tour of the campus. These girls will still be members of the Association of University Women after graduation. ROW ONE: Paula Holler, Terry Cover, Eldonna Sides, Cheryl McElhose, Donna Miller, Mary Row. There is a club or an activity to suit your interests. If you are interested in helping your fellowman, join the Red Cross. Or if you want a strict, dis- ciplined military life, Northeast has a fine ROTC program. Ex- cited by the prospect of working while attending school? The COE is for you. Or if your life's work will deal with journalism or pub- lications, the Courier or the Nor'easter will start you on your way. Or does your curiosity move you into politics? If so, by being a member of the Student Council, you will learn the basic rules and procedures used in this profession. Where ever your interests lie, you are sure to find the right activity to help you develop it. 173 ROW ONE: Shorron Carl, Vicki Montesano, Janann Freeman, Janet Bethke, Karen Olson, Carol Evans. WM The Red Cross was very active during the school year of 1966-67. The year began with Project Thanksgiving. The student body raised enough money to fill a chest with school and health supplies for Vietnamese orphaned ref- ugee children. The Christmas Stocking drive followed this project. The students raised enough money to fill twenty- five stockings for the Veterans' Hospitals with health and luxury items. An extra project of filling 15 stockings for the active service men in the Richard Gebaur Air Base Hospital was given to Northeast when we asked to do more. The Red Cross Council at Northeast finished the school year with the annual Enrollment and Membership Drive, and Summer Recruitment for Volunteers. Our Fearless Leader, The Great White Hunter,” Harry Honda, Bobby Boy. These are all terms which show our great affection and esteem for Mr. Robert Swo- boda, former teacher and NOR'EASTER sponsor here at Thou Dear since 1961. He took leave of the Viking Ship at the end of the first semester this year to accept a posi- tion in Wisconsin. In his teaching, which was his prime objective, he was first-rate. His leadership shown brightest when he obtained enviable results through his methods of using student faith, trust, and self-direction. It was not with jubilation that we watched Our Fear- less Leader depart. We were sad at his leaving, but with him went our most sincere wishes for success in his new occupotion--the success we know he will attain. We of the 1966-67 NOR’EASTER STAFF feel proud to have had the opportunity to work with Mr.Swoboda during the first part of this year. Behind our yearbook stands many hours of our sponsor's work and planning, a sponsor to whom we send many thank yous for simply being himself. It is Mid-Year Event in which lastyear's members renew old friendships. It is the Inter-Society Dance. A society is picking Lit outfits, song practices, and preparing written and oral Lit work for representation. A society is most of all Lit Night, when tension, excitement, and suspension reach a peak. And last, a society is the farewell banquet and election of next year's officers. 205 Vicki Barba Trudy Barnett Pot Bonner Antoinette Brogoto Cheryl Buinger Debbie Coleman Debbie Modison President 1 Vice-President 2 Adriana Imperiale President 2 Treasurer 1 Sally Crane Donna DeMarco Nancy Finley Shirley Gibson Karen Diehl Kazan Heflin Linda Doyle Karen Holst Cynthia Estrada Laura Holt RaeDell Thomas Vice-President 1 Treasurer 2 Roxanne Kime Vickie Murphy Judy LoTorre Marilyn Owens Pam Lusby Karen Stover Peggy Nutter Marguerite Madison Jennifer Templin Becky Topi Jo Ann Gaggens Jeannie Green Secretary I Secretory 2 Initiator 2 Lenora McLaughlin Sgt.-ot-Arms 2 Initiator 1 Donna Tripp Brenda Yates Gloria Vogt Vicki Venable Mrs. Porter Carolyn Zawada Sponsor Jim Browning Craig Bryant lorry Copenhaver Paul Corson Mike Drechsler Harvey Edwards Bob Nutt Hal Sherwood President 1,2 Vice-President 2 208 Scott Fleming Robert Ingold Mike Gardner Richard Irwin Richard Halley David Jocks on Tom Jockson Everett Jocobs Steve lodwig Elwin McKenzie Pot Monord Kenny Middleton Ronnie Deatheroge David Wiliams Secretory-treasurer 1,2 Chaplain I Tom Polizzi Jim Soli go Mike Venable 209 Beverly Albertson Jeonine Allee Normo Bliven Vicki Bryson Undo Allen Mart ho Bump Patty Biggs Toni Catalano Karen Carter President 1 Critic 2 Janet Bethke President 2 Sgt.-at-Arms 1 Janice Bump Vice-President 1 Secretary 2 Linda Chandler Peggy Henkel Janet Coleman Gale House Debbie Davis Jan Hull Donna Flathers Cheryl Jackson Janonn Freeman Judy Jackson Uliana Gomez Beverly Johnson Barbara Haynes Marsho Jones Chris Kirkbride Maryann® Moore Anita Maycock Delio Paul Undo McCorkle Donna Pitts Cheryl Me El hose Harriet Schaller Beverly McMillian Nancy Sharpe Donna Miesner Eldonna Sides Becky Miles Vicki Smiroldo Sally Ambro Karen Olson Vice-President 2 Treasurer 2 Treasurer I Critic I Cindy Miles Secretary I Chaplain 2 Nancy Stinson Pom Vittorino Kathy Weis Jane Williams Woukito Williams Judy Yoger Don Armstrong Jim Atkinson Tom Bornett Jim Brown Mike Cantwell Claude Clardy Glen Redford non Snyder Rondy May Sponsor President 1 President 2 Chaplain 2 Chaplain I Joel Cloudius Robert Collins Terry Conroy Tom Gialde Rusty Grelling Kenny Haddock Ben Hort Mark Hemry Frank locoscio John Luna Jim McCartney John McCorkle Curt McDoniels Lee McNutt Dwoyne Milligan Phil Mohler Ronnie Penland Jack Raucci Doug Richardson John Savona Kenton Murray Joe Possontino David Scott Gary Stanley Mike Martin Bill Brohman Steve Edwards Vice-President 1 Vice-President 2 Secretary-treasurer 1,2 David Steinberg John Sterne David Thompson MikeTroncoso Doug Walter Tom Wittmeyer 213 Karen Adkins Robbie Barr Noncy Braile Terry Bronstetter Carol Boyer Karen Carpenter Karen Nutt President 1 Critic 2 Carol Evans Patty Anderson President 2 Vice-President 2 Vice-President 1 214 Kathy Chondler Karen Cherryholmes Mortho Clardy Donna Drake Phyllis Fontona Elaine Godfrey Karen Collier Anita Gulledge Linda Collins Cecelio Cueize Debbie Hardister Marcella Henderson Sharon Hendricks Diane Henthorn Regina Irwin Peggy Jenkins Frances King Tricia Mendenhall Vicki Montesano Janet Murdick Marilee Partridge Vado Penlond Suzie Rowe Linda Showalter Lynn Brooks Kathy Martin Susan Haerer Karen Hendricks Secretary I Secretary 2 Treasurer I Treasurer 2 Critic 2 Initiator I Chaplain 2 Initiator I Nancy Stephens Jennie Tomlin Karen Yadon Sue West Glenda Yandell Vket Teresa Baldridge Lola Carta Sharon Chevalier Terry Cover Marsha House President 1 Medal-pinner 2 Sharon Colef Vice-President I President 2 Lindo Cox Harriett Crowley Connie Dovidson Chorise De Shozer Cheryl De Shazer Colleen Elmore Cynthia Flathers Alice Hart Marilyn Jockson Ruth Joslin Mary Kosem Susan Kluex Karen Laughlin Eunice McDaniel Mary McMahon Sherry May Karen Stokes Vice-President 2 Linda Anderson Treasurer 1,2 Diane Parsons Ida Walters Mary Row Mrs. Broy Sponsor Anne Jackson Secretary 2 Look at that chest! 218 Now if anybody says I said this, I didn't say it, but .
