“
A name familiar to all Nor'easters is that of Mr. E. A. Markey. From 1937 until 1956 he coached the Northeast varsity Football team to many victories, and under his leadership the Northeast teams achieved seven city championships. In 1956, Mr. Markey left Northeast to assume the position of Consultant of Boys’ Physical Education for rhe Kansas City high schools. Three years later he returned to Thou Dear” to serve as her very capable vice-principal. Mr. Markey has indeed done a great deal to push Northeast to success athletically, socially, and scholastically. We shall always re- member the loyal service and constructive guidance he so often rendered to Northeast students. And so, it is to you, Mr. Markey, for your spirited service to our school, that we respectfully dedicate this, our 1962 Nor’easter. PUBLISHED BY THE NOR EASTER STAFF NORTHEAST HIGH SCHOOL VOL. XLVIII KANSAS CITY. MISSOURI EDITOR ADVISER SANDY DE SHAFFON ROBERT SWOBODA DEDICATION ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY SENIORS UNDERCLASSMEN MUSIC ACTIVITIES SOCIETIES CLUBS SPORTS QUEENS FACULTY MR. M. WAYNE McKANNA PRINCIPAL Northeast is extremely fortunate in having as her principal a man very dedicated and concerned about the many phases of high school life — Mr. Wayne McKanna. In a school as large as Thou Dear, many situations arise which must be handled with intelligence, tact, and often a sense of humor. Mr. McKanna has certainly upheld all of these qualifications. Teachers and students feel confident chat Northeast will continue to move along smoothly and efficiently tinder the competent leadership of Mr. McKanna. Agnes Wendel Sam Passiglia Have a problem? Need some suggestions for future programs? Northeast has three capable counselors who are more than will- ing to offer their services to help you. Their friendly attitude and thoughtful con- sideration have brought many a confused student out of his enrollment difficulties. The counselors advise students on the selec- tion of colleges, help many to achieve scholarships, and guide them in the choice of vocations. Northeast is proud to have such a devoted team of counselors. Never regretting or looking back, but always looking ahead with anticipation, we now stand on the top rung of the ladder we have been climbing for twelve years. Each rung represents some achievement, some task com- pleted, and some ambition realized. Our senior year has been filled with ex- periences which are now only memories. The football games, Homecoming, Lit Night, the Prom, and finally Graduation are now just a part of our past only to be relived again and again by others in years to come. As we stand together for the last time at Graduation, we realize how very true the familiar words, For all we know we may never meet again, have become. And so, to the underclassmen we leave behind us, we say good-bye, good luck, and take good care of Thou Dear.” Maria Arrendondo Jay Ash David Ault s E N I 0 R S Diana Ackerson Caroline Adams Kay Alexander Carolyn Allen Sharon All ton Delores Ambrose Gerald Aiello Carol Anderson Charles Annis Les Avery Mary Bacon Judy Bailey Judy Baker Lanny Ballard Rita Banner Mary Bare Harold Barron Beverly Battin Linda Beagle Sue Bealmear Edward Beam Ronald Bell Gerald Bennett Walter Benson Gnetta Berryhill Neva Biles Robert Black Beverly Blair Garry Blatt Barbara Boehm Beverly Bogle James Bogle Margaret Borawski Kathleen Britt Sharon Brizendinc Rose Ann Brogoto 1 Connalea Bronsor Joe Brown Rose Brown 2 Shelia Brown Sherry Brownley Gary Brumley Robert Boren Sharon Lee Bover Donald Bowling s E N I John Boyland Donna Brauner Elaine Breeden 0 R S Walter Bregach Louis Brengarth Lucreta Brisbin Jennet Bryant Kathryn Bryson Kennis Buckley Donald Bulyar Diane Burley Donald Burnell Linda Burns Richard Burnworth David Burrough s E N I O R S Mary Burton Nancy Butler Diana Byers Beverly Byrd Linda Caldwell Patricia Calef James Campbell John Campbell Linda Campbell s E N I O R S Mary Campbell Vicky Campbell Pat Campos Nancy Carder Barbara Carlo Michael Carter Judith Cass Deena Caton Joan Cessna Judy Chalmers Sharon Chapman Bill Chapman David Charles JoAnn Chenowetb Judith Claibourn 1 9 6 2 Judy Clarke Roger Coates Helen Coffey Jeanne Cole Mary Jane Collara Edward Columbus s Gene Cook Sherry Cookerly Ann Cooper Lonnie Copenhaver Dwight Coveil Carole Coy Lloyd Cridlebaugh Donna Cross Cheryl Curtis Stephen Curtis Dennis Czech Donna Daugherty James Davenport Raymond Dawson Barbara Deal James Doll Phillip Dorman Patty Dowell 1 Gary Dozier Michael Dryden Rod Duncan 2 9 6 Donald Dunn Rose Durham Robert Duvall Alice Defeo Margaret Delisio Ronald DePasco s E N I 0 R S Penny DeRuelle Sandy DeShaffon Carol DeShazer Judy Dethlefsen Pat Devero Michael Dickey Carl Enloe Sharon Enloe Tommie Erickson 1 9 6 2 John Martin Ericsson Tony Esteban Mary Facemire Jim Fairbanks Linda Faler Marlyce Fechner Linnie Eads Bill Easter Andy Easterly s E N Fred Edwards Jackie Eirls I Tom Elliff o R S Judy Elliott Sandra Ellis Rodger Elston Chuck French Judi Gahm Glenda Galbraith 1 Larry Gallamore Jerry Garafolo Penni Gardner 2 Jeannete Garrigus Mike Garrison Larry Gates Sue Feindel Pat Fiorello Sharon Fleener s E N I Sue Floyd Tommy Foltz Donna Ford 0 R S Edward Foster Royce Fowler Jimmie Franzeskos Robert Gaunt Trudy Gibbons lane Giddens s E Vernon Giles N Gloria Gillman i Donald Ginn i 0 R C Dorothy Glover Jcaneen Good Gary Goff Chris Graves Danny Green Helen Green 1 9 6 2 Mary Green Lee Gregory Vincent Guadagnano Mike Guinn Martha Haley Sandra Halsey Jon Henry Audrey Heslop John Hess Elaine Hicklin DeWayne Highfill Henrietta Hill 1 9 6 2 Linda Hilton Shirley Hilton Jo Ellen Holder Jim Hamilton Phillip Hamilton Kathy Harlan s E N I Betty Harmon Linda Harmon David Harned 0 R S Suzanne Hatcher Dianne Hemstock Jackie Henderson Calvin Hodge Judy Hollcroft Robert Holst James Hood John Hotson Earl Howard Shirley Howard Thomas Howard Robert Huggins s E N I 0 R S Michael Hullebusch Charles Hulse Donna Hunt 1 Barbara Hunter Richard Huntsinger Sharon Hurd 2 Patty Hurley Ann Hurst Keith Hutsell Judy Johnson JoAnn Johnston David Jones Jennie Jones Linda Jones Sandra Jones 1 Dorothy Iiams Mary Ingold Sharon Inselman Judy Jablecki Sue Jenkins John Jenkins Kenny Jenkins Joyce Jewell Eric Johnson Janice Kauffman James Kean Karl Kennedy Neal Kennedy Kirk Kenton Dennis Kienzle s E N Betty King Linda King I Harvey Kobel o R S Sharon Koch Phyllis Kohl Warren Krueger Joan Krusor James Landuyt Tana Lee Lang Bill Lanning Larry Larabee Rosalie Larabee Judi Laughlin John Laurie Lyle Leas Mary Luce Judy Lynes Revis McAnulty Richard McCabe Donna McCall Betty McClanahan 1 9 6 2 Gloria McClaskey Sandra McCollum Shirley McCoy Julia Leger Robert Legg Jeannette Lemka s E N I O R S Linda Lentz Marilynn Lewis Dale Lightfoot Sharon Lisk Sharon Livingston Joyce Loveless Patricia McCue Larry McDaniel Roberta McFarland s E Paul McMillian Sandy Manard ¥ Phyllis Mangiaracina X o R S Barbara Manzo Mary Marotta Karen Marsh David Martin Loren Martin Sharon Martin Harry Matney Joann Mathew Michael Maturo Jane May Carolyn Medley James Meredith Henry Montez Mary Montez Mary Moore Sammy Messina Donna Miller Alfred Millan Marylin Miller Dan Millman Diane Minear Deanna Moorman Jerry Moss Darryll Murphy Glenda Myers Marylin Neptune Jack Nichelson Darlene Northern Mike Norwood Larry Novotny Karole Null Donald Oldham Jack Owen Charles Owsley Gilbert Parker Mavis Parsons Robert Parsons Deanna Patterson Sherill Patterson Dianne Pearce Barbara Penticuff Betty Peterson Trudy Peterson Mary Petit Donna Petty Choir presents annual Christmas Assembly. During the past two years, under the sponsorship of Edwin Nance, the council has become a very important function of our school. Through the process of demo- cratic representation, student council members report and evaluate the ideas and opinions of the homerooms they represent. These elected representatives and their officers express serious concern for the betterment of our school. This year, the council made definite prep- arations for the financing of a foreign exchange stu- dent for the 1962 - 63 school year. Of all the organizations at Northeast the most valuable is the Student Council. ROW ONE: Bob Johnson, Joe E. Brown, R. K. Schwcer, Loren Martin, Patrick Montez, Nancy Watts, Vic Catalina. An organization may attribute its success to many things: ambition, loyalty, co-operation, fellowship, hard work, and a dash of fun. The play told of what happens when a Nazi indoctrinated youth from Germany, Emil Bruckner, comes to America to stay with his uncle. The uncle is doing war work for the government and the boy tries to spy on him in order to serve Hitler. After many misunderstandings and even attempted murder, Emil comes to understand that maybe democracy has something after all. The publicity of the play served to point up the fact that a Communist youth would react in much the same way as Emil did — and this being true the play is still very timely. ALPHA LITERARY SOCIETY The Alpha Literary Society was organized in 1913 and was the first society at Northeast. The motto, Esse Quam Videre” meaning To Be Rather Than To Seem,” is our outstanding purpose. The Jonquil is our flower and the traditional colors of Alpha are gold and white. The year’s activities began with Alpha’s rush. This proved to be an exciting affair that left a memorable experience in the minds of all who attended. After this excitement died down the Alphas began to concentrate on Lit work. 86 During the year the Alphas took time out from Lit work to enjoy a few social events. At Christmas we took clothes, toys, and food to a needy family. We also pur- chased new gold and white” jackets. The climax of the year was the Farewell Banquet. Goodbyes were said and tears were shed as another event- ful year for the Alphas came to a close. ROW ONE: Judi Jablecki, Carole Coy, Lucreta Brisbin, Betty McClanahan, Betty Peterson. BENTON LITERARY SOCIETY In '61 '62 the Bentons have become a leading so- ciety. We have received five positions on Senior Ballot, and have the President and Sergeant-at-Arms of the Sen- ior Class in our ranks. Apart from the political standpoint, the Bentons are also prospering in other ways. This year (the first in many) we have set deadlines and fines on lit-work which our officers have enforced. The seniors in the society bid the juniors and sopho- mores farewell and best wishes. We feel that we have chosen the best group of boys and now expect you to do your best and uphold the tradition of the Benton Literary Society. 88 ROW ONE: John Rooney, John Moroso, Irwin Sano, Walt Bre- gach, Boyd Williston. CLIONIAN LITERARY SOCIETY The most important event in the life of a Clio girl is initiation. It is at this time that each new member re- ceives her first long-stemmed red rose which is symbolic of the scholastic achievement and high ideals of the so- ciety. Upon receiving the red rose they are entitled to share all the wonderful experiences with their Clio sisters. First semester was typical of such experiences as slumber parties, pizza parties, and picnics with our Benton broth- ers. Clios don’t always look at the world through rose- colored glasses though. At Thanksgiving they shared their many blessings with a family less fortunate than they. Then at Christmas time they extended the Christmas spirit through stuffed animals for children of needy families. Second semester found all the Clios burning the midnight oil” in order to turn in to the judges the best Lit work ever! Even with all this hard work, the Clios still found time for fun at song practices. Then came Lit night when all the secrets were re- vealed and each member anxiously waited to see if the hopes and dreams of the year would become a reality. With spring came the annual Farewell Banquet. The seniors expressed their sentiments toward the society and received their last red rose; which will be a constant reminder of their wonderful years as a. Clio. NORTHEAST SOCIETY OF DEBATE With the opening of the 1961 -62 school year the Debaters were well ahead of the other societies with the planning of their first semester rush. This year's rush was the best ever said N.S.D.’s sponsor, Mr. Redford. The hopeful rushees were well entertained at the rush with skits given by our Delta sisters. Speeches and refreshments were also enjoyed at the rush. After the hustle and all the confusion of rush had died down, came the hard task of electing new mem- bers that would do as much to promote the name of Debaters as the alumni of N.S.D. have done since it was founded in 1913. 92 With the second semester well in hand. Debaters received many honors to place along with the ones al- ready in the Debater Log. The Northeast Society of Debate was proud to have chosen from members of their society the Vice-President, Reporter, and Treasurer of the Senior Class. Then came the Senior Ballot with three more honors, such as Most Popular Boy, Social Lion, and Jolly Good Fellow. Lit Night, Debaters were in full attendance and started and finished in good style. Then, came the Farewell Banquet where every sen- ior bades good-bye to his society brothers, telling each to always keep and place the Northeast Society of De- bate in highest esteem. DELTA LITERARY SOCIETY This year, as years preceding, being a member of Delta has been a very rewarding experience as well as a memorable one. The year was begun by the preparation of our first semester rush. With the initiation of the new Deltas, the year began. We were kept busy by the events associated with Delta. All of our wonderful get-togethers added and reinforced the closeness for which Delta has always been known. Our brothers, the Debaters, have added a lot of fun throughout the year as they always have. As the year drew to a close, Lit Night became the prime interest of every Delta. Our triangle which stands for character, knowledge, and stability, together with our motto, Always Faithful” added much to the excitement of Lit Night—for we were always striving to attain these goals. With Lit Night over and the glories distributed, the Delta doors were closed for another year. But the doors she has opened in our hearts will always remain open and our minds as well as our hearts will always cherish our days as Deltas. 94 ROW ONE: Luanne Robins, Patty Hurley, Rosie Durham, Carole Null. THETA LITERARY SOCIETY The motto of the Theta Literary Society is Knowl- edge is Power. This year, as in the past, the Thetas have strived to live up to the high ideals expressed by the motto which has been a part of Theta since the society was organized in 1921. The Thetas started the year’s activities with a rush party from gay Paree. During the rest of the first semester we were busy with initiation, homecoming prepa- 96 rations, choosing new sweatshirts, and adopting a needy family for Christmas. Preparations for the all important Lit Night were the main activities of the second semester. Songleader try-outs, choosing Lit Night and Oration Day outfits, song practices, and last minute corrections of Lit work were activities that will always be remembered by the members of the Theta Literary Society of 1962. FRENCH CLUB Le Cercle Francais was begun in 1914 under rhe name of Les Penseurs” and later became known as Les Miserables . The raison d'etre of the group is to introduce to the students the language, culture, and cus- toms of the French-speaking peoples. By gaining a better understanding of the French people whose cus- toms differ from ours, the students could do their part for the mutual understanding among people and nations. This year activities have consisted of attending the classical play, Britannicus by Racine, participating in the Homecoming Parade, planning a trip to New Or- leans and excursions to art galleries for study of French art. Aside from these activities the traditional ones of adopting a family for Thanksgiving and presenting Christmas gifts to'an orphanage were also continued. All in all, the 1961-62 school year has been a successful one for the French Club. 1ST SEMESTER OFFICERS 2ND SEMESTER OFFICERS ROW ONE: Joan Krusor, Vice-President; Phyllis Arnone, Chap- lain; Connie Bronson, Treasurer. Its purpose is to develop in its high school members, ideals of helping and aiding those in sickness or in need. Once again Northeast’s chapter of the High School Red Cross is one of the finest in Kansas City. Northeast has had the good fortune of having for its President, John Jenkins, who also gave a fine representation as President of the All-City High School Red Cross Council. Under the guidance of its sponsor. Miss Cannon, the North- east Chapter of Red Cross participated in many important proj- ects which made this one of the finest years for Red Cross of Northeast. We're all so proud of our banner! Shake my paw. F.T.A. CLUB The Gertrude Bell Club was chartered October 1, 1957, with the idea of helping the interested pupils of Northeast High School who wish to become teachers. Having its charter from the National Education Association in Washington, D.C., a great deal of written material is available which answers questions about the teaching field such as college training, personal qualities, and financial remuneration. Meetings are held regularly with speeches and demonstrations making up the very profitable programs. Any pupil who has an inclination for teaching as a career is welcomed into the F.T.A. Club. Linda Serres VARSITY CHEERLEADERS The 1961 -1962 Varsity Cheerleaders created a new enthusiasm for school spirit. Many of their new cheers and ideas were brought back from a cheerleader's clinic held at Missouri Valley June 13-17. They had previously held a car wash to help finance the trip. They were well rewarded for their work and diligence as they returned with a white megaphone, given to them for taking first place in competitive cheering. Thus, with hard practice and che help of their sponsor. Miss Lou Jean Moyer, the cheerleaders vivaciously lead the crowds in peppy new cheers. Nancy Watts Cookie Curtis 140 Judi Laughiin Head Cheerleader Sandy Shores Sandy Manard -, -%V Berry Dye Head Cheerleader Margret Butler J U N I O R The junior varsity teams have their cheer- leaders too — and very enthusiastic ones at that. The B-Team cheerleaders are chosen by faculty members early in the fall after competing in a series of cheers and acrobatics. To promote more concern and enthusiasm for the B-Team games is the aim of these girls. As a result, competition is tough and enthu- siasm is high among these girls. So keep an eye on them because next year you'll most likely be seeing many of them as your varsity cheerleaders. Mrs. Pickens became a member of our faculty in 1956 as a teacher of mathematics. Her death brought an im- measurable loss to Northeast. She will always be remembered by her students for her devotion to her subject and her ability to make it live. She enriched the lives of her students both by teaching them and inspiring them to reach higher ideals. Through her life she set an example for others. Her philosophy of life can best be summarized by one of her favorite lines of poetry: O, Earth, I cannot hold thee close enough.” IN MEMORIAM As the year draws to a close and we review the numerous events of this past year, we are reminded of the sudden death of our beloved custodi- an, Mr. Lloyd Blair. His willingness to help and his sincere concern for our school made him a familar and respected figure at Northeast. Mr. Blair will always be remembered as a faithful friend and associate of all who knew him. 159 IN MEMORIAM Lester Hall Fleming III, fifteen-year-old sophomore at Northeast, died unexpectedly last February of spinal meningitis. He was a member of the junior varsity basketball team and also played in a 3 2 baseball league. He had many friends at Northeast, all of whom were deeply saddened by his death. Hall was loyal to his school and classmates, and his memory will always remain with us. 160 INDEX OF ORGANIZATIONS Alpha Literary Society________________________86, 87 Band__________________________________________ 66-68 Basketball___________________________________ 130-133 Benton Literary Society..................... 88, 89 Blue Notes................................... 67 B-Team Cheerleaders.............................. 141 Cafeteria _______________________________________ 83 Cheerleaders _____________________________________140 Clionian Literary Society____________________ 90, 91 C.O.E. _____________________________________104, 105 Concert Choir_______________________________ 62, 63 Debater Literary Society____________________ 92, 93 Dedication__________________________________________1 Delta Literary Society.-.
