He has given hit un- selfish efforts to make each year a successful one for the Seniors. He came to Northeast in 1931 as a teacher of physiography, chemistry, and biology. He has been assistant football coach, chairman of the arrangements committee, executive sec- retary of the National Honor Society as well as Senior sponsor. Mr. Calvert also served as the photographer for the Nor1 easier in 1946. His loyalty and school spirit have been an out- standing example in leadership to the faculty and to the students. And so to you Mr. Calvert, for your service to us and to our school, we respectfully dedicate this, our Nor’easter of 1961. Ronnie Bond President Ray Cousins Vice-President Madeline Montesano Giftorian J§ ntiar (©fftcers The falling leaves, the added coolness in the air — these things ushered us into the new school year, our senior year. To us it was unbelievable because we didn’t feel like seniors at all but 1500 un- derclassmen seemed to think we were so off we went. Important events were many this year and each of them came so fast that we didn’t have time to catch our breath before the next one was here. The football and basketball games, the wonderful school spirit at a new high this year, our responsibilities as officers, the dances, Lit Night, the Senior Prom, and finally graduation — all these things combined to make a wonderful year for us and one which we hate to leave behind. We hope Northeast will always remember us as we’ll remember Thou Dear. Their ability to teach and their persever- ance furthers our education and helps to mold our lives. Not only does their fob call for teaching ability and intelligence but it also requires a disciplined hand and an understanding of youth. In a way, a teacher must he a part-time counselor as well as an educator. But the actual job of counseling is left to our counselors. Through their guidance, we become better students and without their help and understanding we would be faced with many problems. Considering all these requirements, the faculty of Northeast Senior High School is one of which we all can be proud. Although the overall Viking record this year proved to be mediocre in comparison to other years, the strength of the Vikings was shown by the fact that they were successful in never losing a league game by more than one touchdown. The season started with our first opponent, Lincoln, completing the winning touch- down in the last 33 seconds of the game. Thus the Van Horn Falcons fell as our first victims of the season, when they were defeated 14-0. The night Northeast met Manual they met their easi- est opponent, winning 48-7. The next game, in turn, was our roughest. The Vikings tied West- port by a score of 1-1. The following week N.E. tied Southwest 7-7, thus dimming the Indian's chance for first place. Southeast's Knights scored 19 points in a terrific offensive play the last quarter, winning by a close 19 16 victory. Our gala homecoming was overshadowed by a dis- appointing loss to East, final score 7-0. North- east finished the season in sixth place with a 2-3-2 record. First Row: Rooney. Deters. Starting the season without a returning regular, the Purple and White were short of experience, but by the start of league play had managed to gain enough poise, confidence and team play to carry them to a three-way tie for the Interscholastic League crown and the number seven spot in the Kansas City Star’s Top Ten” in the metropolitan area. A busy December found the Vikes holding their own in six tournament games plus wins over St. John’s and Westport along with a loss to DeLasalle. Toughened by this nine game background, North- east opened league play by defeating East 45-51. After a 53-46 loss to Manual, victories were scored over Van Horn, Southeast, and Lincoln before losing an overtime thriller to Central. Three straight victories over Paseo, Westport, and Southwest gave the hustling Vikes a share in the league championship. The unusual loss of seniors by graduation tends to darken next years picture. On hand to carry the North- east colors will be an above average group from this year's sophomore studded Junior Varsity. The Junior Varsity outlook too seems rosy, because of a strong freshman team, the first in Northeast history. JI IOR VARSITY First Row: Larry Van Sickle, Dale Kimble. Our ambitious Viking cheerleaders washed cars, cleaned basements, and did other odd jobs to earn a portion of their expenses needed to attend the National Cheerleaders Clinic held at the Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois this summer. They brought back many new cheers and tion of excellent cheerleaders at Northeast. This was the cry of the 1960-1961 B- team cheerleaders who were chosen this fall. The girls worked hard to learn new cheers and secure uni- forms to cheer at the B-team foot- ball and basketball games. Their uniforms consisted of purple sweaters with large white emblems and white armbands. Dyed to match the sweaters, were purple pleated coulottes, with white insets. These girls contributed greatly to raising interest in the B-team games and promoting the school spirit which was displayed at Thou Dear this year. Jleal (Eluh The 1960-1961 year began for the Seal Club with the flurry and rush of planning a formal initiation ban- quet, followed by an hilarious informal initiation in the pool room. The fall event, held at Marguaretds on the Plaza, serving such delights as Taco's and Tortillas has become an annual event and was enjoyed by all. After the semester, preparation began in anticipation of a racing meet held in March, from which six proud winners emerged victorious with small gold trophies. The girls worked long and hard for the presentation of their annual synchronized swimming show held in the latter part of May. This event, begun last year, was the highlight of the year and required hours of practice to make it a success. Altogether the year proved to be an exciting one for the Seal Club, under the capable leadership of their new sponsor, Miss Owens. FIRST SEMESTER — First Row, I eft to Right: Anne Brooks. The carious sports which were studied and perfected, ranged fro?n hockey, basketball, volleyball, and softball to bad- minton, synchronized swimming, and riflery. Northeast girls made their showing at three sports- days this year. The first sportsday which was hockey was rained out. Composed of a representative from each homeroom plus elected officers from the senior class, it gives the students of the school a voice with the officials. With its goal of improving the school in any possible way, this year's council has certainly done an ef- fective fob. One of the major improvements was the revision of the method of electing class officers. The system that had been in use for thirty years was obsolete so the necessary changes were made. The Student Council also did much to make Homecoming and the Home- coming Dance a great success. The half-time parade, the beautiful decorations at the dance, and the white mum corsages added much to the gala event. Under the guidance of the president and the new sponsor, Mr. Nance, the Council has served its function well. Keep smiling brrrrrrrr. 83 Karen Broun, Secretary; Terry Green, President; Terry Cramer, Climbing to success; Treasurer; Ronnie Dayton, Vice-President. Rational Hottor j ocietg Throughout the high school years, there are students who, because of their ability and persistence, distinguish themselves. As a reward for their recognized excellence, the faculty of the high school during their junior or sen- ior year selects them to membership in the National Honor Society. The candidates for membership are judged on the basis of four things; scholarship, leader- ship, character, and service; and after careful considera- tion the fortunate ones are chosen. After their notifica- tion they are presented in an Assembly before the entire Student Body. After the traditional ceremony, they be- come members of a nationwide organization. The familiar pin of the torch against the background of the shield may be proudly worn anywhere by these dis- tinguished students. First Row; Janet! Dorman. Terry Cramer. Judy Puckett. The idea behind the group as effectively stated in the constitution is the betterment of the Northeast area in all ways as regards its youth. Through speakers and study, the Council learns of effective ways to further traffic safety while the Court functions in much the manner of an actual court. Stu- dents who commit traffic offenses appear before the Court and voluntarily take the punishment decided upon. The idea of students punishing themselves for their own traffic violations, thus showing their interest, is ex- cellent; and this organization is a real asset to the com- munity. Every other Friday shortly after the beginning of fourth hour, a curi- ous quiet settles over school and stu- dents are seen with faces buried be- hind a large paper. The latest issue of the Courier has just been distrib- uted. The quiet doesn’t last long though because everyone has to dis- cuss the news in the Courier. This year the paper reached a new high in quality and the position it holds in the school. As the repre- sentative of the opinions of the stu- dent body and its activities, and as a ready source of humor, the Courier is an outstanding newspaper. This mem- arable line brought howls of laughter from the audience of the Fall Play given at Thou Dear. About 900 people laughed their way through the insane melodrama of two ladies feeding helpless little old men poison Elderberry wine, and then, with a funeral and all the trimmings, burying them in the cellar. A rather unique curtain call was presented at each performance. After the cast had taken a bow, the bodies of twelve dead men marched out of the cellar and also took a bow. The play was directed by William Bergfeldt, with Sandy De Shaffon helping out as Student Director. But, since the understanding of other peoples is far more complex than the mere understanding of the word, in planning our programs, we concern ourselves with the history of the French speaking peoples, with the development of insight through study of selections from their literature, their music, and their art. To implement this program we have speakers, movies, musical programs, art displays, dramatic readings, and French dining. rend] (ttlub 120 FIRST SEMESTER OFFICERS — Row One: Louanne Robins, Sergeant-at-Arms; Chee Chee Cushman, President; Sharon Harrill, Reporter. Under the direction and able assistance of its new sponsor, Miss Cody, it has been completely re- organized and has taken a new role in the life of the school. The purpose of La Charlita is that all Spanish students may grow in their ability to use the language and in their understanding of the Spanish-speaking people of the world. Several events have been held to accomplish this purpose, the most important of which was the fiesta. Celebrating El Dia de Los Reyes Mac os, the members and guests enjoyed a delicious Spanish meal in the very authentic atmosphere of Guadelupe Center and afterwards were entertained by Spanish singers and dancers. Plans are in progress for a Spanish table in the cafeteria during the lunch hour, at which only Spanish will be spoken. A Spanish fiesta will close the year in the spring. Cross Each jail when the homerooms elect their repre- sentatives to the various organizations, one of the most important which they select is the Junior Red Cross rep- resentative. As the Northeast branch of the Red Cross, this group plays a vital part in many important under- takings. Club or the Gertrude Bell Club, was organized in 1957. It was named after Miss Gertrude Bell, a former Northeast teacher, in memory of her forty-five years of devotion to the teaching profession. The F.T.A. Club has a charter and is affiliated with the National Education Association. The members of the club participate in many activ- ities. They have attended many programs and receptions for instruction on the possibilities of teaching as a career. Meetings are held regularly with talks and demon- strations making up the program. The question and answer method is used for obtaining information for the future teachers. The club is very worthwhile for anyone planning a teaching career, for the knowledge and ex- perience gained therein are very rewarding. OFFICERS — First Ron. Charleen Province. Henreitta Hill. Not neglecting the brighter side, the Clios were also seen sporting their red and white sweatshirts around the halls. Symbol: Triangle Colors: Green and White Flower: White Chrysanthemum Song: Stardust” This year was as each preceding, an eventful one filled with new, broadening experiences for every Delta. From Rush in the fall through Farewell Banquet in the spring, they were all kept happily busy with activities and obligations. Rush was undoubtedly the best ever held, setting a new and higher standard for the future. The huge, beautiful triangle made each Delta realize anew the honor that comes with being a member of a group whose three guidewords are character, knowledge, and stability. This was emphasized even further at the solemn initiation of the pledges, who have certainly be- come a vital part of the society. At Thanksgiving and Christmas, the Deltas remembered those less fortunate by doing volunteer work at the Tuberculosis Association and giving toys and candy to an orphanage. Mid-Year Event was an hilarious thing, at least to the old members who really had fun further initiating the frightened pledges. All emerged safe and sound, though. With second semester came Lit, the high point and goal of the year. Drafts, dresses, and songs kept all in a glorious whirl, and walking down the aisle brought proud tears to the eyes of each girl. Too soon it was over, with the Farewell Banquet speeches of the departing seniors a fitting climax. Each year seems the best for Delta and this was no exception. The newly elected members were then properly initiated, both formally and informally. The first semester was filled with work, both on drafts and on picking declamations. But, along with the work came several coke parties that were held at the regular meet- ings. As the semester continued, the Thetas began to look for patterns for Lit dresses, and for material and accessories. The first semester went very quickly, and be- fore long final drafts were due. All the Theta typists helped, and finally everyone finished the three copies needed to be typed. Preliminary judges were selected and the drafts turned over to them. At the semester break, many Thetas went to a progressive dinner that served as a Mid-Year Event. The mid-year rush was also held and four more girls became Thetas. After looking over sample materials and patterns, Lit dresses were chosen and the selection of songs began. After Lit Night the Thetas had a party. The next day the Farewell Banquet was held. The seniors were sad because it would be the last time that they would see all the Thetas together. Ron One: Sue Feindel. Michael Anderson, Shirley Marlin, Barbara Jones.
