THE YEARBOOK STAFF OF NORTHEAST HIGH SCHOOL IS PROUD TO PRESENT YOUR 1960 NOR'EASTER VOLUME XLVI EDITORS: RILEY CUSHMAN KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI KATHLEEN DUGGAN ADVISER: JAMES N. DRAKE V NORTHEAST Our school is people: % It's the principal Being a friend; It's the teachers Giving tirelessly to lead. To inspire, to open doors; It's the students, casual Or serious, avid to know. Eager to speak; It's people with hopes. Anxieties, dreams. Permanent school spirit — These are our school . . . And the spirit within it. o ° The student realizes that Education is the strongest Foundation of a forceful personality . . . If he keeps an open mind. Out of class and in. He map attain his lofty aims. So when summer comes He need not dream of what might have been. J.N.D. ec •iC •vC' • - - y, A i f 4k • ■p Jfl FACULTY SENIORS UNDERCLASS ACTIVITIES CLUBS SPORTS Ref. C Os E. A. MARKEY Vice-Principal M. WAYNE McKANNA Principal SAM PASSIGLIA AGNES WENDEL FACULTY Teachers are not people to be feared or thought of as persons so far removed from the students that it would be impossible to know or make friends with them. Similarly, counselors are not to be thought of as men and women who are there only to talk with your parents about your misbehavior in school. They are all human beings with their likes and their dislikes, their faults, their problems, their prejudices, their conventions, and their idiosyncrasies. Long after students will have forgotten the teacher's name and what the course was about, they will remem- ber a gesture, a pet phrase, a particular stance, or a peculiar mannerism of the instructor. It is thus that the students will remember, probably with a longing to see them again. Northeast High School's teachers. CUFF ABEL: Physical Education, Track. You will still reserve your common-herd freshman characteristic of doing what everyone else is doing, your sophomore characteristic of begin- ning to find a new door open with something intriguing just inside, and your junior characteristic of being a middle man on the totem pole. You are looking forward to a new and final year filled with new and exciting things from crazy antics of all kinds to your solemn graduation ceremony. But all these apprehended things will never overshadow your past wonderful year as a junior, and your even more distant years. Each year will be a lasting memory. So the future is yours junior, or is it senior now? Billie Wilson Treasure Don longstreth Sergeant at Arms Fini Row: D. The Student Council of our school is our biggest class in government. Here the rep- resentatives from the various homerooms meet and discuss their individual problems. Here also the problems of the school are aired. But discussing the problems of the school isn't the sole duty of the Student Council. They also plan many of the activities in which the school participates, such as as- semblies, bandstand appearances, etc. Also many projects have been sponsored by the Council this year; these have included a Social Code and identification cards for the students. With the co-operation of the faculty and student body, the Council will long remain one of the most constructive influences in Northeast. NORTHEAST YOUTH COUNCIL COURT In its second year of operation, the Northeast Youth Council has developed into a leading organi- zation of the school. The Council is composed of students from Northeast and Glennon high schools and is sponsored by the Northeast Community Council. The primary function of the Northeast Youth Council as stated in the constitution is the betterment of the Northeast area in all ways as regards its youth. The students felt that one of the best ways to improve the area was to improve the driving done by the youth. Thus, the Youth Court was formed. This Court follows procedure exactly as an authentic court. Students from the participating schools are sent to the court if found guilty of a traffic offense. At the Youth Court there is usually set a period of voluntary license suspension. The offender signs an honor pledge if he wishes to co-operate. He may sign a work pledge if it is necessary for him to drive to or from school or work. The Council and Court have met with the ap- proval of both students and parents and therefore has completed another successful year. OFFICERS: Richard Higgins, Sergeont-at- Arms; Don Kimble, Treasurer; John Ibarra, President; Margaret Dethlefsen, Vice Presi- dent; Donna Dishman, Bailiff. VOCAL MUSIC Those who sing do not always sing correctly. This is the first lesson taught in vocal music classes each year, and to learn the correct way of singing is the goal of every student participating in these classes. With the help of capable and hard-working directors. Miss Violet Clausen and Miss Martha Cain, most are able to attain that goal. The mixed chorus and girls' choruses provide an opportunity for development as all members strive to increase their chances of being selected for the A Cappella Choir. It is when the choir selections are made that real work begins — constant drilling, vocal exer- cises, and music memorization — and just when it seems all has been accomplished, a new song is pre- sented and another cycle begins. The choir is rewarded, however, with every per- formance, as the members acknowledge with pride the appreciation of their audience. HARMONY In the field of vocal music in the Kansas City School System, Northeast occupies a distinctive position. The only class in har- mony in the city is taught here. This fact was publicized recently by a picture-story in the Kansas City Star. The harmony class offers students the chance to write original songs, while learning the fundamentals of music and music manuscript. While the creative is stressed, the student leaves the course with a deeper understanding of vocal music. As unbelievable as it may seem to the cautious American driver, the approximate number of fatalities on our highways due to traffic accidents is over 40,500 persons per year. Even though the automobile is thought of as a transportational asset, it may very well be considered a legalized death weapon. To help combat the above situation. Northeast has inspired a great increase in the number of students interested in Driver Education — 280 students this year. Despite meager equipment, cramped quarters, and a shortage of funds, we knew there was a job to be done. With dedicated hearts our layout staff planned over 150 pages, using photographs carefully selected from over 1,000 taken. Our copy staff wrote, read, and revised over 75,000 words of copy. To create a yearbook is not the easiest job in the world, but we all managed to have a good time in our toil. Now that it's over — well, in that little room on the third floor at Northeast High, there exists another world: a delightful combination of work and play. COE The purpose of the Co-Operative Occupational Education program is to provide an opportunity for students to enter an occupation of their choice while completing high school. Students work in offices, industry, and business. The typical C. O. E. student attends classes for three hours each morning; two of these classes are chosen to fulfill graduation requirements and to relate, if possible, to the work being done on the afternoon job. For this he will earn eight credits a year. The job training counts as a solid and the C. O. E. class as a solid. The program provides two kinds of material: directly related material, which specifically deals with the work being done on the job, and general related material, which is general information with which all workers should be acquainted. Because students receive experience and training while still in high school, they are better prepared to take a full-time job upon their graduation. The Alpha Literary Society is the oldest society of Northeast High School having been originated on October 13, 1913. The name Alpha is derived from the first letter of the Greek Alphabet. Alpha has succeed- ed in maintaining its traditions of high character and friendliness throughout the years since its establishment. Working and planning together is the aim of all mem- bers. The traditional colors of Alpha are gold and white, and its flower is the jonquil. Its motto To be rather than to seem, speaks for itself in its simple sincerity. This year, as a special Christmas project, the Alphas sang Christmas Carols and presented gifts to an old folks home. Gold corduroy skirts and vests with match- ing tennis shoes identifying the Alphas looked nice as they walked the halls of Northeast. These corduroy out- fits were worn on special occasions as well as regularly every two weeks at the Alpha meetings. As the excitement of Lit draws near, the enthu- siasm is shared by every member. Last minute prepara- tions are made, then the big night finally arrives, leaving a thrilling and unforgettable memory. Initiation held the spotlight for the Bentons during this school year. The blue and gold, traditional colors of the Ben- tons, are well known throughout the school. On Lit Night each Benton receives the traditional flower, the white carnation. Elections, the choosing of Lit Night outfits, the buying of jackets, song practices, and parties add to the fun of being a Benton and help to make the excite- ment of Lit more enjoyable for each member. Each one lives up to the name of the society so he can be a credit to Northeast High School and the Benton Literary Society. First Row: Richard Oaks, C. M. The first important event of the literary year for Clios was the initiation of new members. These new members each received a single, long-stemmed red rose — the traditional Clio flower. After the fun of initiation was over, the whole society was reminded that Lit was the climax of the year and that they should start their Lit work. Not forgetting the lighter side, however, Clios all adorned the halls of Thou Dear in their new red and white sweatshirts. At Thanksgiving, a family was adopted and toys were given to needy children at Christmas. The second semester officers again urged every- one to do her best on Lit work; and drafts, drafts, and more drafts were turned in. About this time of year it seemed as if everything was secret — dresses, songs, etc. The three song leaders were kept busy making actions to the songs and keeping everyone on tune. After Lit night, the last event of the year was the farewell banquet. There were the usual tears and goodbye speeches and the seniors received another red rose. Each year every Clio knows that no matter who wins Lit, she still has forty-four sisters and many memories that she will never forget. The Northeast Society of Debate was founded in 1913 and is the second oldest extracurricular or- ganization at Northeast. Leadership, service, and all around good guys are the characteristic Debater markings. Alumni include such prominent men as Gen- eral Maxwell Taylor. Through the years the Debaters have been an outstanding and zenith group. This year promises to add another to the successful series. Activities, includ- ing two Delta-Debater parties, two rush parties, a food basket for a needy family at Christmas, and, of course, the big event, the literary contest, have kept everyone busy the second semester. Since only one initiation was held by the Delta Literary Society it was one of the most exciting events held. The girls initiated were each given a corsage of white chrysanthemum, the traditional Delta flower. The triangle, the emblem, is characterized by three guiding words, these being; character, knowledge, and stability. Each Delta works hard to let these words guide her in her Lit work. Elections; adoption of families; parties, both a- lone and with our brothers, the Northeast Society of Debate; song practices and the purchasing of sweat- shirts, Oration Day outfits, and Lit Night dresses all add to our list of memories and the fun of being a member of the Delta Literary Society. The Theta Literary Society was organized in 1921 and has continued since then to lead the school. As Thetas we always try to develop school spirit and pride. We are known for our friendliness and for our high scholastic standards which are shown every year on Lit Night. Knowledge is Power, our motto supplies us with the inspiration needed to lead us to victory. Theta's symbol is a crescent moon containing an owl, representing wisdom. You may often see members of the Junior Red Cross selling candy around our school, stuffing stockings for the veterans and fill- ing overseas chests for needy areas. All these projects are directed for the purpose of not only promoting the worthwhile activi- ties of the Red Cross but also to instill in the students of Northeast the sense of responsi- bility to others. Not only have they changed their name from Speech Arts to Theatre Arts, but they have had a shift of sponsorship from Mrs. Murrish to a new speech and drama teacher at Northeast, Mr. Bergfeldt. Finally the members adopted the colors of silver and blue to symbolize their club. But throughout all this they have retained the same purpose — that being to encourage appreciation and participation in the fine arts among the students of Northeast. Through their many activities they con- tinue to be an organization of which our school may be proud. Capable officers and co-operative mem- bers have made the 1959-1960 Spanish Club a tremendous success. Learning of the ancient cultures and interesting customs of Spanish speaking peoples was but one of the enjoyable things in which the members participated. One of the most successful projects was the joint French-Spanish Club project of presenting a program and Christmas party to the children of a Menonite Orphanage. Many beautiful gifts totaling around one hundred dollars were contributed to the children from members of the clubs and many warmhearted merchants. During the first semester, the Spanish Club Constitution was adopted. This docu- ment contains the principles, goals, and by-laws of the Spanish Club; while also stating the correct procedure for electing officers and amending the Constitution. After many full and rewarding experi- ences, we are now looking forward to the coming year, when more new activities will be enjoyed. Hasta el ano que viene! One hundred and thirteen students were enrolled in either first or second year Latin during the past year. This enrollment shows the increasing interest in the culture and basis of the Latin language. It is felt by all that they have gained a better understanding of their own language through Latin. The activities during the year included such things as a Roman Banquet in which they all dressed as gods, goddesses, slaves or just as people of old Rome. At Thanksgiving the students brought food for a needy family and a group of officers delivered it. They also parti- cipated in the Junior Classical League Convention which was hosted by Southeast. During the convention they were served a meal which was in accordance with the tradition of everything From Eggs to Apples. These many activities show that for the Latin Advocati, Latin lives today. OLVMPIC CLUB Initiation funl Beginning the year with another hilarious initia- tion and chili supper, the Olympic Club members, un- der the guidance of their sponsor. Miss Moyer, worked hard to make this the best year ever. Highlighting the year was the Junior-Senior Build- ing Men's Faculty Basketball game. The Olympic Club sponsored the game, making the tickets, programs, and selling souvenirs. $161.50 was raised, $75.50 going to the Dean-Smith Memorial Fund, which the Olym- pians help in some way each year. At Thanksgiving the members were busy adopting a needy family and supplying them with a turkey din- ner. With Christmas came caroling at Rest Haven Old Folk's Home and taking toys to children at Mercy Hospital. For the future, the Olympians hope to better their club by having requirements to fulfill before be- coming a member. The girls now are still the best in sports Northeast has to offer, making the Olympic Club as successful as it is. They are Vikettes, members of the Northeast Vikette Pep Club. The purpose of this or- ganization is to promote wholesome school spirit and to promote, along with the stu- dent body, a sense of loyalty to the athletic teams. One of the main activities of the year was marching during half time at the home- coming game. The Pep Club led the parade around the field, then marched onto the field forming an E for East, and an N for North- east. Joyce Orlando was presented with the new award for Outstanding Pep Club Member of the Year. She was chosen from two other candidates nominated by the cabi- net, on her past achievements in Vikette activ- ities. She was awarded a plaque in a pep assembly. A Pep King was crowned at the annual pep dance of the year. So through their various activities the Vikettes led their Viking teams to victory. OUTSTANDING PEP CLUB MEMBER OF THE YEAR. The Norsemen sought revenge and found it plenti- ful. Paseo ended up two yards in the hole in their rushing attempts as the powerful Northeast defense held the first of four teams scoreless, winning 14-0. The potent Southeast Knights found the Vikes still stalwart and came very lucky to retain a 6-6 stalemate. The season final, with our arch rival East, on the Bear's field provided an exciting, but not too fitting, conclusion. Northeast jumped to an early lead but two Vike fumbles in the second half gave East the ball and thirteen points, final score. Northeast has maintained a superior record in the Interscholastic Football League. One factor which is certainly deserving of recognition is the B-team football program, where the individual skills of each boy are developed. It is here that the boys master the techniques and gain the experience necessary to produce a championship Varsity tedm. Termination of league play found the Northeast crew on top, tied with Lincoln and East, with a 6-3 record. This is the first time in three years that Lincoln has not been the monopossessor of the crown. Two of the outstanding games were both very close losses to perennially area dominators Pern Day and Rockhurst. Vikes began loop play with two quick victories then a set- back by the East Bears. Three easy conquers plus a close win over Central put Northeast a- lone at the top. But the Viking's collapse during their last two games caused the tri-shared league lead at the close of the season. All dual meets were won: Northeast vs. Van Horn — 45 to 11; N.E. vs. Wyandotte — 56 to 32; N.E. vs. Central — 25 to 17. And the Vikings took fourth at both the Big 8 meet at the Municipal Auditorium and the Central Relays.
