Text from Pages 1 - 152 of the 1959 volume:

A name familiar to all Nor’easters is that of Mr. Arthur O. Kresse, a fac- ulty member with a sincere interest in Northeast and her activities. During his twenty-six years at Thou Dear, Mr. Kresse has trained many students in both English and Latin. We shall always remember Mr. Kresse best, however, for his service as advisor to the Nor’easter stalT. From 1944 until 1958, Mr. Kresse worked diligently and unselfishly so that Northeast students would always have a superior yearbook of which they could be proud. Thus, for his loyal service and con- structive guidance, it is to Mr. A. O. Kresse that we humbly dedicate this 1959 NOR'EASTER PUBLISHED BY THE NOR'EASTER STAFF NORTHEAST HIGH SCHOOL VOL. XLV KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI EDITOR KENT HUNTER ADVISER JAMES N. DRAKE 2 ADMINISTRATION MR. M. WAYNE McKANNA Principal Northeast is extremely fortunate in having as its administrator a man such as Mr. McKanna, whose interest in and knowledge of all phases of Northeast life make him well-qualified to cope with those many little (and big) problems that are somehow continually arising. Through his efforts, Northeast students were given the opportunity to join with those of Glcnnon High School in forming a Northeast Youth Community Council which, in turn, set up a Northeast Youth Traffic Court. Mr. McKanna enjoys gardening, woodwork, traveling, and of course all sports activities in which the talents of Northeast’s superb athletes are demonstrated. Because of his wise assistance in their problems, his sincere interest in their achievements, and his loyal support of their activities, the Nor’easters join in ex- pressing to Mr. M. Wayne McKanna a big, hearty “Thanks!” 6 MR. E. A. MARKEY Vice Principal This year has been an unusually successful one for Northeast, athletically, so- cially, and scholastically. One man who has done a great deal to push I hou Dear to that success is Mr. E. A. Markey, in this, his first year as her Vice Principal. Mr. Markey completed his Bachelor of Science degree at Central Missouri State College and his Master of Arts at the University of Iowa. From 1937 to 1956. he coached the Northeast varsity football team to many victories, and under his lead- ership, they achieved seven city championships. He left Northeast in 1956 to assume the job of Consultant of Boys’ Physical Education for the Kansas City High Schools. Mr. Markey’s strong interest in sports is demonstrated by his selection of hobbies, for he enjoys fishing and is a spectator at many football, basketball, and track events. With a sincere concern for his'school and capabilities extending into many fields. Mr. E. A. Markey has gained the admiration and respect of all Northeast Vikings. 7 MR. 8AM PASSIGLIA That friendly, smiling face so familiar to all Northeast students belongs to the sopho- more and senior counselor, Mr. Sam Pas- siglia. His cheerful personality and keen sense of humor has won for him many friends. Assisting with enrollment, selecting pupils for special classes and activities, test- ing for scholarships, and counseling students about college are only a few of the many duties which are his. MRS. AGNES WENDEL After only two years at Northeast, Mrs. Agnes VVendel, has become a vital part of our school life. Though she has many re- sponsibilities to keep her busy, the Fresh- men and Juniors always find her ready to listen to their problems and lend helpful advice. In her own words — “I’m proud to be one of the members of the faculty.” 8 FACULTY AH the knowledge, skill, art and science that we use and revere, up to Einstein’s formulas linking matter and energy, are merely the repetition and extension of a basic principle. This extention, however, does not take place by itself, but must be preceded by slow and painful teaching; just as the ability to run must always follow tedious lessons on how to walk. There was once a time, no doubt, when even Mr. Einstein wasn’t quite sure of the product of eight times nine. No man can say of another: “I educated him;” but it is a proud thing to say: “I taught him.” Education must come from within, yet it is often the result of the teaching he has had. Experts in their special fields, teachers provide a reservoir of knowledge from which interested students may draw in order that they might be- come experts, too. The Dramatics instructors, for example, are busy training the young men and women who will be tomorrow’s celebrated producers, di- rectors, and performers. I hey instill in us the desire to learn all we can, not for the sake of knowledge alone, but for the purpose of creating meaningful, contributive lives. It is their wish, and ours, that what is now so often said of them may someday be said of us — that wherever they are is a better place because they are there. As you approached your next-to-the-last year in this merciless institution of learning, you were un- doubtedly possessed with a feeling of superiority at having achieved at last that enviable position of being a JUNIOR! But, alas! You were soon rudely awakened to the cold, hard reality of your highly inferior state, as a proud Senior gave you a shove, “Out of the way, Junior!” Then, as you had almost resigned yourself to the fact that you must exist as an underdog for one more year, things began to pick up. You noticed for the first time the absurd immaturity of Fresh- men and Sophomores. You enjoyed more frequent informal chats with your teachers. You elected Class Officers, ordered your Senior rings, and en- joyed that special night of the Junior-Senior Prom. The tears you shed for your graduating friends, however, were only a farce; for deep down inside you were chuckling, wondering what it would be like to say, “Out of the way, Junior!” 16 -------------------------- Walt Zubcr President Dick Shores Vice President Linda Stamper Giftorian Janice Clevenger Secretary V. SOPHOMORES - FRESHMEN “Freshmen and Sophomores, bow down!” snap the haughty Upperclassmen as they pass through the halls of Thou Dear. “Why, no one ever said that to me,” you immediately deny. Of course those were not the exact words; Upperclassmen are far too subtle for that. But did you ever notice those supercilious glances, those noses to the air? They were meant for YOU, little friend. You surely remember the scornful attitude of the Juniors and Seniors as you and your friends performed your many comical antics. Well, just between you and me, they were inwardly laughing with you, wishing they could join you in your buffoonery. They are actually very fond of you; for, after all, that’s what Upperclass- men are made of! 80PH0M0RES FIRST ROW: Barbara Jones, Madeline Montesano, Ruth Clark, Phyllis Nathans. STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council is comprised of a small group of students representing the ideas and opinions of each individual at Northeast. At the beginning of the school year, each home room selected one mem- ber to participate in this student govern- mental body. In order to facilitate greater ease in handling special tasks,, various committees were organized on which every representative served. A few of the activities undertaken dur- ing the year were, decorating a float on which the queen candidates rode in the Homecoming Parade, the collection of funds by the Civic Committee for a Christmas Care project, sending $164.12 for needy children in Korea. By far the most noteworthy achievement of the stu- dent Council was the development of the Northeast Youth Community Council which was organized co-operatively by Northeast and Glennon high schools. Those who had a part in the Student Council projects this year have certainly done much to improve our school, not only in appearance, but also in the atti- tude and spirit of her students. Thanks, Student Council, for a job well done! BAND The Northeast High School Band members had very little time to relax this year because of their many program commitments. Highlights of the year were the Band Day trip to Columbia for the Missouri- Vanderbilt game, the All City Band Festival, the American Royal Parade, the Westport Parade, and several concerts, in addition to some of Northeast’s ballgames. This year Northeast played host to the All City Bands, holding the festival at the Northeast Junior Building. It has meant a lot of time and work for the band members, but they have enjoyed this busy and successful year. Band Officers: John Podszus, President; Gary Koch, Vice-President; Gerry Larson, Secretary; Dennis Young, Uniform Custodian; Allan Harris, Stage Manager. Orchestra Officers: Dennis McCarty, President; Georgia Bailey, Vice-President; Gene McEntyre, Sec- retary-Treasurer; Alice Morrison, Librarian. ORCHESTRA It has been another successful year for the North- east Orchestra. The orchestra presented outstanding performances in the All-City Orchestra Festival, the Spring Concert, assemblies, and many other programs. Participation in this group helps develop responsi- bility, character, and leadership, as well as musical ability. Mr. Harry Bianco, director of the Orchestra and Band also spends three hours daily at Northeast Junior to teach and prepare students for their future role in the Northeast Orchestra, thus assuring North- east of the same fine quality music in years to come. A CAPPELLA “Now you're the little mouse in the corner — squeak, squeak, squeak!” cries Miss Clausen as she tries another of her peculiar tricks which, amazingly enough, result in the tuneful, toneful perfection of the Northeast A Cappella Choir. The Choir, as usual, has been much in demand for public performances, and have sung before the Scr- toma Club, the Ad Club, an American Legion Post, the principals' division of the Missouri State Teachers’ Convention, and of course at various assemblies both here and at Northeast Junior. Spring activities included the Northeast Spring Music Festival, the All-City Vocal Music Festival, Farewell Assembly, Baccalaur- eate, and graduation ceremonies. It has indeed been a busy year — one that students, teachers, and choir members alike will long remember. The Girls’, Boys’, and Mixed Choruses encourage the student in musical appreciation and ability, and pro- vide a fine background in the fundamental principals of sight reading, harmony, and part singing. The knowledge gained by Chorus members is displayed to appreciative audiences at school assemblies, the All-City Festival, the City Solo Contest, and other public performances before church and civic organizations. LATIN CLUB Latin lives today at Thou Dear, not only in regular class work, but also in the programs and activities of the Latin Club. In order to get into the true spirit of the ancient Roman language, club members often dress in togas (Mother’s old sheets) and portray Roman gods and goddesses. Birthdays, Christmas, and Thanksgiving are celebrated by singing Latin songs. A traditional Thanksgiving program includes the presentation of gifts of food to Ceres, goddess of agriculture, who in turn pre- sents them to a needy family. Stress is placed on the fallacy of the idea that Latin is a dead language, though once in a while, the Latin students are tempted to chant the famous poem: ‘‘Latin is a language, dead as dead can be; First it killed the Romans, and now it’s killing me!” Latin is really very much alive as the basis for modern languages and professions. FRENCH CLUB Spain has Don Quixote, England has Winston Churchill, but the French Club has John Pierre Belmessari! This past year, Northeast has been for- tunate in having a second year French class, taught by Mrs. Mary Jane Berger, ably assisted by a “real Frenchman.” John started the year off right by de- claring the club name, “Les Miserables,” a disgrace. With his winning personality and democratic open mind, he suggested “La Marseillaise” as a possible substitute, with the same title for the club song. The motion was made official at the next meeting, with everyone heartily in favor. The programs always had that “spicy French fla- vor” with French playing cards, newspapers, songs, and that unforgettable meeting visited by “Mademoi- selle X.” Naturally, the French club car in the Home- coming parade was one of the most outstanding. At Christmas time, les Parisiennes filled everyone with that “good ol’ Christmas spirit” by caroling in the halls of Thou Dear, and bringing toys, food, and clothing for an adopted family. Christmas wouldn’t be complete without parties, and the French Club, not to be outdone, had a rousing one. Everyone had a wonderful time, at least that’s what they told Linda Hamilton as they left her house at 1:00 a.m. To bring the year to a fun-filled close, the French Club enjoyed a Spring picnic, which was a huge success, as usual. Every worthwhile organization has a purpose, and the French Club is no exception. “La Marseillaise” provides a medium whereby “les etudiants de fran- cais” may put their newly acquired language to use, through songs, games and conversation and endeavor to do their part in service projects. The Spanish Club members wish to develop flu- ency in speaking and understanding the Spanish lan- guage, and foster appreciation of the rich cultural contributions of Spanish-speaking peoples in the areas of art, music, and literature. The members of the club also perform such services as entertaining at various orphanages and homes for the aged, and adopting needy families. With ear to the ground, pencil in hand, and nose to the grindstone, each staff mem- ber has done a fine job in making this year’s Courier one of the juiciest scandal sheets in the history of Northeast. YOUTH COUNCIL A newly formed student activity group at North- east this year is the Northeast Youth Council, com- posed of students from Northeast and Glennon high schools. During the first part of the school year, students from Southwest High School presented a mock trial before a Northeast Student Council meeting depict- ing an average session of the Southwest Youth Traf- fic Court. Our Student Council became enthusiastic about this plan for reducing teen-aged traffic viola- tions in the Northeast area. The officers of the Northeast and Glennon Student Councils met with the Northeast Community Council to secure sponsor- ship for the organization. The Northeast Youth Court, an outgrowth of the Youth Council, is run in strict accordance with the procedures of an authentic court. When a youth en- rolled in either of the participating high schools is determined guilty of a traffic offense by a municipal court judge, he is assessed a fine and sentenced to either a day in jail or appearance before the youth court. A jury of students determines the restrictions that should be placed on the traffic violator — us- ually a voluntary license suspension. If the youth must drive to and from school or work, he may sign a special pledge whereby only pleasure driving would be restricted. The purposes and functions of the or- ganization can be summed up by its motto: “By governing ourselves, we will have no occasion to be governed.” NORTHEAST YOUTH COUNCIL OFFICERS: Margaret Dethlefson, Sgt. at Arms; Judge Robert Frost. Susan Shotliff, Vice President; Joyce Croc- kett, Bailiff; Rosemary Cascio, Treas- urer; Larry D. Blair, President; Joe Gi- alde. Secretary. ABSENT: Theresa Kelly, Vice President; Mike Moore, Sgt. at Arms. 1959 NOR'EASTER STAFF Editors: Sandy Elliff, Photography Editor; Kent Hunter, Editor-in-Chief; Susan Shotliff, Story Editor. “All right, who changed the ladder?” again roared Kent Hunter, the 1959 editor of the Nor’easter. “Where’s my ruler?” “What happened to the faculty pictures?” “Is the coffee ready yet?” and “Oh no! Another broken typewriter!” were just a few of the many exclamations that could be heard by any passer-by as the Nor’easter staff worked (?) carefully (??) to produce this book, the 1959 Nor’easter. With Mr. James Drake, our adviser, standing around shouting “Deadline deadline!” the staff labored diligently, planning for pictures, writing stories, typing final drafts, and selling Nor’easters — always frantically rushing to meet that mur- derous word — “deadline.” Now we, the Nor’easter staff, our work completed, are ready to settle back and relax while you, the student body, sit down and journey through this exciting book of memories, the 1959 Nor’easter. 48 Mr. William J. The Co-operative Occupational Education program provides an opportunity for the high school student to get a start in the occupation of his choice while attend- ing school. In the classroom, the C.O.E. student studies material designed to make him more proficient in his chosen field of work, for which he earns one unit of credit. In the afternoon, the student works at his C.O.E. job, earning one unit of credit in addition to his pay. A peephole slides open. As you try to look in to learn the source of all the music and laughter, your eager gaze is met by a pair of cold, beady eyes. “I-1 was s-sent by Joe,” your voice quavers. The peephole snaps shut, the door swings open, and there you are, amid the fun and excitement of Viking Village. Your first stop is the Ping-Pong Room, where in no time at all, you’ll find your head bobbing back and fourth from watching a hot volley between two table tennis champs. As you don’t wish this strange man- nerism to become a habit, you decide to try a game of basketball in the boys’ gym. After only a short while at that strenuous exercise, you're ready to enjoy a refreshing coke and a slow, dreamy dance with that cute girl you just followed into the girls’ gym. You ask her to dance just as a speedy rock V roll song (?) starts spinning on the record player. You wear your- self out trying to impress her with your flying feet, and (alas!) you succeed. Now she won’t let you sit even one out. Like all good things, however, this too must come to an end, and you go home, tired but happy, look- ing forward to next Friday night when you'll hurry back to Viking Village. ‘‘Cool Man!” ‘‘Arc you sure there are l oys inside?” ‘‘What’s in that punch?” ‘‘No thanks. The goal of the clubs is to “promote fellowship, Christian living, and good sportsmanship.” By combining their efforts to achieve these, the work is done not only more effi- ciently but with a feeling of enjoyment. The meetings became more serious when the big events of the year rolled around. Plans were made for the annual Sno-Ball dance over which the Queen Doralee Miller, reigned with a pretty smile. Youth and Government was next on the agenda — by far the most interesting and educational project under- taken. Charles Bennett was elected President Pro Tern of the Senate at the pre-legislative meeting. In the Spring a sizable group representing the Northwest dis- trict went to Jefferson City and, with Hi-Y Clubs all over Missouri, actually took over State legislation for three days. A summary of Hi-Y activities would be incomplete if Jovial Jack O’Laughlin, advisor of the Senior club, was not mentioned for never has a club had a more popular sponsor. Jack and all the members believe Hi-Y is the greatest and hope to see a growing mem- bership in the years to come. SENIORS. FIRST ROW: Thomas Pugh, Rcnny Nichols, David Veterane, Dick Clark. A branch of the Y.W.C.A., Y-Teens is composed of senior high school girls interested in bettering themselves and their com- munity. This year, the girls were assisted by a new adviser, Mrs. Lucille Shepard. Representatives from our Northeast group attended a Fellowship Dinner in the fall where each Y-Teen organization was asked to represent a different coun- try. Several Bake Sales were sponsored by the Y-Teen girls in order to Finance the annual Sweetheart Dance, which was appropriately held on Valentine’s Day this year in the beautifully decorated ballroom of the downtown Y.W.C.A. building. Genevieve Anderson was chosen to reign as queen, with Kathleen Duggan as Junior Princess, and Donna Rohning as Sopho- more Princess. The girls met twice a month, and enjoyed pro- grams by guest speakers several times throughout the year. Through varied projects, they found many op- portunities to practice their goal: . .To grow as a person; to grow in friendship with people of all races, religions, and nationalities; and to grow in the knowledge and love of God. Let’s count noses!” These are familiar words to the Speech Arts Club members as they prepare to leave the hallowed halls of Thou Dear (temporarily, of course) and journey to the Uni- versity of Kansas, Park College, and other campuses nearby to watch plays and rehearsals of various college groups. In addition to these jaunts, the Speech Arts troupe enjoyed several other entertaining get-togethers, in- cluding a Christmas party and a Spring picnic. All the members of the club are interested in public speaking or dramatics, and some plan to make their profession in these fields. The club also has educa- tional value for those not enrolled in speech class.. The Speech Arts gang will heartily agree that their club provides a good time for all, whether they’re watching a play at a nearby college or “hamming it up” here at Thou Dear. OFFICERS. Participation in this restricted society is the highest honor of achievement given at Northeast. Teachers judge nominees on the basis of their achievements in scholarship, leadership, character, and service. Only those students who maintain a scholarship index of 3.25 are considered for membership. The students pictured below had the special honor of being elected as Juniors in the spring of 1958. These thirteen members planned the induction cere- mony for the students elected in the spring of 1959. In an impressive assembly, the National Honor So- ciety members repeated the oath of membership and received the pins signifying their scholastic achievement. But the closing of the assembly was not the end of the efforts of this team of six who cheered our teams to many victories. School spirit rose to a new high this year due to the unceasing efforts of our cheerleaders. They were: Janice Colyer, Senior; Sheilah Lewis, Senior; Jan Markey, Senior; Doralee Miller, Senior. Mary Lee Thomp- son, Junior; and Charlotte Williams, Senior. Many new cheers and cheering techniques were brought back from the Oklahoma Cheerleader Clinic by Jan Markey. The girls were also assisted, as in the past, by Miss Lou Jean Moyer, adviser. Northeast has undoubtedly become a better school because of the teamwork, ability, initiative, and enthusiasm of the 1958-59 Varsity Cheerleaders. B-TEAM CHEERLEADERS This year for the first time the football and basketball B-teams have had their own cheerleaders. Throughout the summer, Genevieve Anderson, Senior; Karlyn Cur- tis, Senior; Joyce Crockett. Senior; Toni Bellanti, Senior; Elizabeth Delisio, Senior; and Tiffany Vance, Junior practiced diligently, learning new cheers and perfecting old ones. Their first appearance was at Cheer- leader Clinic at St. Joseph Central High School where they demon- strated a new cheer by Tiffany Vance. Miss Nancy Kicnlc acted as the girls’ adviser, and helped greatly at practices and with the choosing of uniforms — purple sweaters and coulottes with white lettering, purple and white beanies, and white shoes. Besides cheering at B-team football and basketball games, the girls also helped out at varsity games and pep assemblies. New interest was aroused in the B-teams because of the pep and en- thusiasm of the B-tcam cheerleaders. Gen Anderson Tiffany Vance Karlyn Curtis Toni Bellanti Liz Dclisio Joyce Crockett Lujin Wood POWERFUL VIKINGS The 1959 Viking grid-men turned out their best performance since 1952 with a 7 win 2 loss record. This fine display of football talent was made possible by the powerful Northeast line and, in the words of the K.C. Star, the “most ver- satile if not the best backfield in the league.” The backfield was truly well balanced with an excellent passing and running attack, punting and blocking ability, coupled with exceptional speed and power necessary to be a winning team. The opening game with Raytown proved to be one of defensive ball with neither team gaining any ground. Late in the first quarter Maxwell broke through the center and kept going but the play was called back. Then in the second quarter the Blue Jay’s Danny Titus took a punt on his twenty-five yard strip and weaved seventy-five yards for a Raytown T.D. Again the game slowed to defensive action around midfield but in the fourth quarter Ross Coker, Blue Jay back, broke loose and scored the final touchdown with a thirty- five yard run, leaving the score at 13—0. The next week saw the revenge bent Vikings run William Chrisman into the ground for the twelfth time in the thirteen game series. Tremendous blocking proved to be the deciding factor and the Norsemen easily stacked up a 33—0 win. A strong Southeast team stunned the Vikings with a crushing 33—6 victory in the first league game of the season. Southeast, chosen best defensive team in the nation, also looked great on offense with a tremendous display of football dexterity by All-American, Bud Abel (formerly of Northeast). Even though the performance of the Vikes was overshadowed by the Knights, Northeast was somewhat consoled by the fact that we had the only team that scored against the top team in the nation. The Vikings again bounced back by smashing Southwest 31—6 due to the dazzling array of passing, running, and blocking by Northeast. Westport was next on the list and the game was a thriller. Westport’s tricky backfield set the precedent by breaking over from the eight with two and a half minutes left in Forbes Hustad 84 Coulson Giles TAKE QECOND PLACE the first quarter. The Vikes bounced back via a 38 yard, Ricono-Boone, pass play, with only 15 seconds left in the first stanza. The Vikings boosted the score to 19—6 in the second quarter while Westport, unable to cope with the sparkling pass-plays of Northeast, fell behind. The Tigers took to the field with renewed vigor in the third quarter and running off of the deceptive belly series startled Northeast with a 20—19 lead. The Vikes, again taking to the air, scored in the final period by means of a 61 yard touchdown drive, thus ending the see-saw battle by etching out a 25-—20 victory. Manual posed no problem as the Norsemen blasted the Redbirds 55—0 led by Dick Clark with 13 points and 85 yards rushing. The Vikings ran rampant over the field, smashing Manual’s line, causing losses up to 40 yards, and plunging through, around, and over the Redbird defense as though it wasn’t there. Northeast easily coasted by the Paseo Pirates for their fourth win against one loss in league play. The Viking eleven had by this time jelled into a fine offen- sive and defensive team and with Ricono leading the way both phases looked fine, thus producing a 34—6 victory. East promised to be the toughest game left for the Vikings but Northeast took it in stride and posted a 12—6 homecoming victory. Producing excitement to the last, the East Bears were unable to penetrate the Viking defense until the final stanza. Twice the determined East team pounded their way to the Vik- ing five-yard strip; but the Norsemen would not give up, twice turning them away with tremendous goal line stands. Corky Maddox and Bill Graves sparked the team to victory with brilliant defensive performances as the Northeast de- fense shone. Northeast wrapped up a successful season by pouncing on the Central Eagles 39—6. Central was unable to solve either the Purple defense or offense and succumbed to Viking superiority enabling Northeast to grab second place in the league. Their success is usually attributed to fine coaching, an especially strong line, or a swift back- field. However, one factor which is certainly deserving of recognition is the B-team football program, where the individual skills of each boy are developed so as to be of the greatest possible benefit to the team as a whole. It is here that the boys master the techniques and gain the experience necessary to produce a cham- pionship Varsity team. MANAGERS Varsity Manager, Joe Gialde Varsity Manager, John Franzeskos 87 B-Tcam Manager. John Carter The Viking cagers opened the season by participating in the South- east tournament. Westport was the first to fall as the sharp-shooting Vikes hit 55% to post a 53 40 rout. Northeast’s tight zone defense sewed up the Van Horn Falcons to win first place in the tournament with a 46—38 victory. After defeating Glennon and De Lasalle the Vikings lengthened their string of victories to five by defeating Lincoln 43—37. The first half looked bad for the Vikes. for the towering Lincoln team continu- ally grabbed the rebounds and outscored Northeast seven points in the first half. The zone, however, tightened up in the second half and the Norsemen forged ahead to win. In the semi-finals of the Interscholastic Tourney Northeast again defeated the Van Horn Falcons with a score of 36—35. Northeast lost their bid to extend their undefeated status to seven games, when they lost the game and the championship to West- port, 51-—50, in a thrilling see-saw contest. Following a 44—42 defeat at the hands of the Rockhurst Hawks, Northeast began league competition by vengefully smashing Westport 41—29. The Viking five dropped their next game to Lincoln, 44-—39, due primarily to Lincoln’s radical court design. Southwest and Cen- tral were next on the agenda and they were trounced 63—31 and 40— 23 respectively. The Paseo Pirates proved to be tougher than expected when the chilly Vikings threw away a 31—13 half-time lead to scrape by 40—37. Northeast continued to win by defeating the die-hard East Bears and Manual Cardinals 43—35 and 47 35, but were stopped again when Van Horn erased all hopes of first in the league by a 1 point margin. (47—48 . To finish league play the Vikings slid by slow moving Southeast, 29—27, in a double overtime victory; led by Gar)' Narr who swished a 21 foot jump-shot with only 5 seconds playing time remaining in the last overtime. After blasting Bishop Miege, Northeast set their sights on a return trip to St. Louis, via the State Regional Playoffs. The first Viking ri- valry was East and the Vikes produced a mild massacre, winning 56— 37. The North Kansas City Hornets threw a scare into the startled Vikes with a torrid first quarter. The Hornets swished their first seven shots and most of those were 20-footers. Northeast, however, managed to keep up and broke loose in the last half to blast the Hornets 62—47. The finals saw Northeast and Van Horn meet for the fourth time but the Vikes were unable to keep up with the 40% shooting of the red- hot Falcons. Northeast jumped to a 2 point lead in the first stanza and maintained it until the 3rd quarter when Van Horn tied the score 33-—33. After a flurry of points by the Falcons in the fourth quarter Northeast seemed to fall apart. The Vikes tried desperately to catch the fleeing Falcons but to no avail, as the game ended in a 52—47 Vike defeat. Although Northeast was picked to take first both in league compe- tition and the State Regional by sports writers, the Vikings could no pull through in the crucial contests. It should be mentioned that the Vikes were able to beat Lincoln and Van Horn, the league and regional spoilers, by wide margins; but they weren’t able to do it at the right time. 90 SECOND TEAM BASKETBALL — FIRST ROW: Gary Coleman, Dan Longstreth. Central is probably the only team that will give the Viking speedsters any competition and they shouldn’t be too hard to handle. Indicative of the Viking might is the 26—16 victory over the East Bears and the dual meet with Shawnee-Mission East in which the only event the visitors could place was third in the 60 yard dash. One of the highlights of the year is the Big Eight Indoor Track Meet at the Municipal Au- ditorium. The Northeast team won first at the Big 8 with 20 points while Central compiled 17. Dave Sheridan won first in the low hurdles leaving the opposition far behind with a time of 7.4. Riley Cushman showed promising form as he finished first in the 880 yard run with a time of 2:03.7. The two performances that stood out, however, as being decisive factors in the belief that Northeast has an excellent track team this year are: John Glorioso, All-State, won second in the 60 yard dash — inches behind the winner, who tied the Big 8 record. (6.4). The sprint relay team, consist- ing of John Glorioso, Ed Neptune, Darrell Barlow, and Dave Sheridan, left the nearest competitor ap- proximately 40 yards behind when they broke the Big 8 record by nearly 2 seconds with a time of 2:10.5. Miss Moyer’s class spe- cializes in sports such as hockey, basketball, volleyball, softball, and badminton, while Mrs. Deister s class ex- cels in synchronized swimming and modern dancing. This year Northeast attended three sports’ days — hockey, basketball, and softball. These teams were selected from the two special gym classes. A new feat which was undertaken by Miss Moyer’s class was a biweekly visit to the armory. The girls received instructions on the handling and firing of a 22-rifle from the ROTC officers. SENIORS Dick Clark Vice President 4 Joe Gialde President Bemie Ricono Reporter (absent) 9ENI0R9 1959 Our school days at Northeast are over; and as we look back over our wonderful Senior year, it’s hard to keep from shedding a tear — of joy, and breathing a sigh — of relief. This last year has held so many happy activities. Some of the best remembered are the Homecoming Game; the In- tersociety, Snowball, and Sweetheart Dances; Vik- ing Varieties; Lit Night; the Spring Play; and the Prom; for together they nearly succeeded in drain- ing us of all our funds. We Seniors modestly agreed that our Senior Assembly was the best pro- duction of all time, and that our Senior Ballot was by far the most wisely chosen. Then suddenly we found ourselves in long gray robes and mortar board, marching with our friends to the poignant chords of “Pomp and Cir- cumstance.” We listened to the Choir, the speak- ers, the presentation of the Class Gift — strained to hear and keep every word, wished we could prolong it, yet knew that too soon it would all be over. As we stood in the final moments to sing the traditional song, we looked about us at the famil- iar faces which had made our school years the happy ones that they have been. We realized that this was the last time we would all be together, then sang with sadness and sincerity, “For all we know, we may never meet again.” John Podszus Scrgcant-at-arms Susan Shotliff Treasurer J 98 Ronald Lynn Anstine Herbert Wayne Antrim Frank Revia Archer Ronald Lawrence Arens Lorcne Jean Armato Carlos Adrian Anscensio Donald James Atkinson Donald Leroy Ault Sandra Ann Ayers Robert Jerald Ayres Eddie Carthel Badlcy Phillip Bailey Betty Faye Baker Judith Anne Banta Helen Cecilia Barber Margaret Sharon Barfoot Darrell Duane Barlow Randy Kay Barnes Donna Lee Beach Antoinette Bellanti Ellenora Elizabeth Bcnigar Charles Perry Bennett Peggy Ruth Berkley Edward Lee Bollinger Carrie Madeline Bonavia Gary Stuart Bond Ann Marie Bonura William Jerald Boone Edward Roe Borchardt William Joseph Borowski Paula Ann Boten Romona Roscline Bouse Richard James Boyle Sharon Elizabeth Bradley Patricia Ann Brand Jerry Clyde Brewer Norma Jean Briant John Nevcllc Brown Patricia Ann Brown Laura Augusta Bryson Rosalind Jean Buccero Roberta Jean Bumworth Judith Ann Burton YVaunita Faye Campbell Sally Ann Campos William Francis Capper David Glenn Carriker Donna May Catron Sam Joe Cessor Gary Dale Chrisman Jo Ann Civclla Fred Pete Cindrich Claude Allen Clark John Franklin Clark Richard Louis Clark Polly Ann Clifton Era Lynn Coates Janice Helen Colyer Fana Cona Carole Marie Conard Earl Floyd Conncrly Jr. Darlene Frances Cooper Luella Jane Copcnhavcr Joy Elizabeth Corley Carol Ann Crispi Edwin Paul Cowan Ruth Lauren Dake Wanda Faye DaMitz Minnie Otta Daniel Elizabeth Ann Delisio Jasper DeSimone Barbara Dale Devine Robert Henry Dice Donna Marie Dilks Sylvia Ann Distefano 8 E Patsy Louan Doiron Lawrence Edward Dorman Peter John Donnici N I 0 R Sharon Lee Doss Betty Louise Downs Gary Drydcn 8 1 9 5 9 Sandra Lee Elliff Vernon Clare Elliott, Jr. Caroline Embrey Anna Elizabeth Eshnaur Sandra Joyce Everitt Anthony Louis Fanara Ettalou Ellen Ferguson Pearl Irene Fisher Marilee Edith Fitzwater Norma Jean Flack Carl Lee Fleener Deanna Rae Forbes John Gordon Forbes Ella Mae Forrest Johnnie Gus Franzeskos Kenneth Edward Fuller Irene Fumal Gail Patricia Galbraith Yvonne Gamm Glenn Alexander Garrison Joseph Stephen Gialdc Judith Marie Glenn John Steven Glorioso Joyce Fay Goodman Gerald Lee Goe Karen Sue Gorham Sandra Sue Gott Marva Jeanne Gowing Shirley Virginia Grass William Dale Graves Frances Lillian Gray Wallace Graybill Ada Mae Greeley Alfred E.
