MARKEY A toast to a swell fella and the best football coach a school could ever have. Northeast is proud of her football coach. Coach E. A. Markey's eleven provided variety de- luxe for the fans of the 1942 football season. Al- though he lacked experienced men, Coach, with the assistance of three returning lettermen managed to guide the team into fourth place. The Vikings finished with a total of ninety-nine points scored against their opponents throughout the season. Only fifty-six points were tallied against them. The Norsemen fought hard on the defense and harder on the offense. Being smaller than the usual Northeast team, the wearers of the purple and white had to rely upon trickery and speed. These tactics proved successful and once the Vikings got started, they were hard to stop. Carl Capra, co-captain, acted as team captain all during the season. His decisions were wise, his experi- MR. He secured the position of right end on the All-Star Team. Fullback Sal Franks, also voted co-captain, was smaller than Capra but he picked up many a yard by his line bucks. The second team also fought hard during the 1942 season. Their efforts were appreciated by their oppon- ents more than those of the first team as they finished in first place. Mr. George Calvert, coach of the second team of years past, was called to serve his country, so Jay Anderson, Northeast alumnus, took over the job of coaching the second team. Nine lettermen will be returning next year to give glory to the purple and white. SCHEDULE AND RESULTS NON-LEAGUE EXHIBITIONS LEAGUE GAMES Northeast . 0 Wm. CQACH REEVES PETERS Managers- Pee Wee,' Frederick and 'KCurly Feiring Nine times the Northeast track squad has taken first place in the city meet and for more than twenty years her basketball team has fin- ished in the upper brackets. Coach Peters has been the inspiration for all of the above teams. Northeast is proud of Coach Peters. CHEERLEADERS Upper left is one type of inspiration but here is another. These were our razzle-dazzle kings and queens of 1943. Princess Carolyn Weins, mascot, is shown with the other members of her troupe. Note the original outfits. The fives of Chrisman, Ward, and Rockhurst proved too powerful for the Viking basketeers and their single lettermen. Off to a poor start, Coach Peters' Norsemen fought gallantly to redeem themselves in the Interscholastic League race. In this, they fought an uphill battle and although they were defeated four times, the purple and white waved over victory thrice. Foreseen hopes are established in five returning lettermen. Chuck', Shields, forward, was elected to the second all-star team and Mike Miller, center, was given an honorable mention. 22 9 BASKETBALL BASKETBALL TEAM SCHEDULE AND RESULTS NON-1,1 AGUI2 Gmxufis NW111. To you, Sergeant Wood, we render a lasting salute in accordance with your fine teachings, sportsmanship, and accomplishments, and a sincere wish for your luck and success with R. O. T. EARLY MORNING PARADE R.O.T.C. HOP The annual R.O.T.C. Hop, although somewhat handicapped by wartime re- strictions, proved to be a very colorful and memorable occasion. The Gym was decorated in the tra- ditional Red, White, and Blue, with a false ceiling and posters pertaining to R.O.T.C. The grand march was led by Major Harrington and Captain Schweer, climaxed by the customary march under the sabers. The dance was attended by Colonel Bondy and Cap- tain Little of R.O.T.C. Headquarters and many of the other Sgt. instructors. Mr. Laughlin, Mr. and Mrs. Davis, Miss Miller, and Miss Weaver attended as chaperones. High school students know the rules of safety but need to be reminded of them fre- quently in a positive rather than a negative way. The work of the Safety Pins therefore has been to do the reminding by such things as original playlets about the different angles of safety and by presenting them over the radio, in community club meetings, in assemblies, and at the Safety Fair. Thus the precepts of living safely are not preached monotonously and the community and the city can be left in touch not only with the fine Work done in safety by Northeast High School students but are themselves aware of the fine safety record of the entire Northeast District, that of first place. Some honors going to Northeast have been national C.B.S. radio award of first place for an original bicycle playlet presented over K.M.B.C.g third place in the ninety-five ex- hibits in the Safety Fairg a radio playlet writ- ten and given for nurse recruitment of the American Red Crossg a dramatic introduction also given for the presentation of the A.A.U. bicycle award to the Northeast student bodyg and safety assemblies for special days such as Thanksgiving and introduction of police of- ficials who visit Northeast from time to time. The Safety Pins also aid the Safety Com- mittee in Bicycle Day advertisement and presentation. The group is composed of seven or eight members who elect next year's mem- bers in the late spring of each year upon the basis of ability both to Write and to present their original ideas. Fran! Before we leave, however, we wish to tell the Sophomores the best times of our life have been had in connection with this, our school, and we hope they make the best use of the years they have remaining. We shall always remember the days at Northeast and we ask the Juniors to carry on in true Nor'easter fashion. Now to these people, the leaders in future years, we leave the following: Bill Reed leaves his title of Tall, Dark and Handsome to Milie fMuleyj Wade. Shirley Peironnet bequeaths her editor-in-chiefis job on the Annual to the government priorities. Joyce Tamblyn leaves Rex Hull to any girl who can hook him. Dean Cook wills the Hi-Y clubs to Jimmy Ru- bick. Jane Ward has given to Lee Duncan her beau- tiful tomato red blush. Richard Stone has pushed off the messy lunch table in Period A. QOHicer's Messj on to Harlow Miller. Lawrence Lehman bequeaths the stage crew to Wallace Thomas. Jean Marquis and Mary Margaret Melloway leave the job of carrying on in the Marquis and Melloway fashion respectively to Nancy Marquis and Betty Ann Melloway. Bill Heilman leaves the Rifle Team and also his ability to make high scores to Jack Mitchell. Harlene Holferty wills to Helen Wilkes her ability to know everything about everyone. Dean Leslie leaves his musical ability for August Miller. Pat Hendrix bequeaths Gloria Handy her su- per sweet personality. Alfred Boersch wills his magical powers to Ronald Doolin. Athene Davis leaves her great intellectual senses to Darrell Matthews. Bill Barnes wills his job of being Northeast's No. 1 Jolly Jester to Charles Herbie,' Branch. CLASSPR Flash! The basement of an old building at 415 South Van Brunt has just been uncovered after being destroyed by fire five years ago. In a can near the furnace was found the records of the graduating class of 1943. Evidently they had been placed there to be destroyed in hopes their terrible contents would never become known. A few items 106 Nancy Elsas bequeaths Pat Palmer all her over- flowing vim, vigor, and vitality. Katie Smith leaves her unquestioned title of Belle of the Ball to Margaret Hobbs. Dorothy Sager bequeaths her position of North- east's foremost Sports Queen to Virginia Tanner. Aldon Annis wills his Trig book along with all its headaches to Stanley Moore. Myrene Ritter leaves the Wassonettes and all their routines to Billie Jean Matson. Joe Scruby leaves his book on How to Get Along with the Fairer Sexi' and also his timely tips to Ronnie Coats. Shirley Clements bequeaths her ability for in- cessant chatter to Beverly Burgess. Charles Shields leaves the basketball games and tournaments to Emil Dykal. Leslie Deniston wills her knowledge in Math and everything else, to Bob Heisy. Carl Capra bequeaths the football team and what have you to Lyal Viers. Carol Lloyd leaves to the Juniors but especially to Frances Baker the Clionian Literary Society. P. A. Fredericks leaves to Bob Feiring the man- agement of N0rtheast's sports. Jean Henderson wills the Girl Reserves Clubs to Bernice Cade. Bill Kelly leaves his job as student director of the band to Bill Salmon. Sue Gates leaves her peek-a-boo bangs to Gene crew cut Daugherty. Glenn Merys leaves his ability to draw cartoons Dj to Mary Lou Walker. Donna Jean Wright bequeaths her leadership and determination to Lois Jean Dreyer. Marie Bost wills her neatness and pleasant ap- pearance to Dorothy Russell. UPHECY from those contents are given below for your con- sideration of the dark and shady pasts of some members of the class of '43 still alive this year of ,65. Lawrence Allred, Einstein the Second, was then struggling through solid geometry along with thirty others. CLASS PROPHECY-Continued Juanita Horner, the currently popular Metro- politan Opera Star, had captured all the boys' hearts with her singing. Bill Schweer, the newly crowned King of Swing, was just a kid that played in the band. The nationls top novelist, Muriel MaGill, true to her trade, had won a lot of contests with her stories. Randall Palmer, world famous architectural cn- gineer, was engineering himself into and out of trouble again. His assistant and chief draftsman, Bob Schaff- hausen, was drafting under Prof.'l Jackson in all the spare time he could muster. Charles Jones, National Hi-Y Secretary, was very active in Hi-Y during his four years and was president of the Senior Class. Georgia Lee Frances, accompanist to The Great Delhune, was the mainstay of the stage band with her rhythm on the 88. The president of Montgomery Ward 51 Co., Bill Allison, had beautiful black curly hair fit still isj and was the girls' No. 1 idol. Arvilla Drinkard is still thrilling millions with that old favorite Brazil like she used to thrill us at Northeast. Jack Sampson, funniest man in vaudeville, and his two straight men, Bill Burton and Glenn Merys, who have just completed a successful run on Broadway with their play, Two Mad Artists and a Crackpot, and are starting another, Three Jerks on a Line, were the practical jokers of Northeast. Dorothy Oldham, president of the Business Women's Club, was the brainstorm of the senior class and her new and novel ideas were ignored by everyone. Jimmie Fetters, successor to Harry James' title of Trumpet King, was hitting it out solid on You Made Me Love You whenever he got the chance. Margaret Moore, private secretary to Douglas Vanderbuilt, kept the Student Council minutes straight while at Northeast. The nation's lumber magnate, Albert Hancock, was the one who knew all the teachers and how to get good grades from them. James Keal, the Beau Brummel of Cafe Society, was King of the Wolf Pack and had all the girls spellbound by his attentiveness. Raymond Gillespie, internationally famous brain QPJ specialist, was right tackle on the foot- ball team and any kind of tackle when he went after a girl. His lovely laboratory assistant, Marilyn Cash, had her tongue wrapped around her eye tooth in Spanish Class along with nzuclaas ofras personas. Joanne List, newly appointed director of the William Rockhill Nelson Gallery of Art, was Miss Newitt's prize pupil. Dick Harrington, Northeast's representative in the Armed forces, a Brigadier General now, is still having fun with his stop watch checking his mcnls cadence. Frank Taylor, director of Rockefeller Research Laboratories, whom every one thought crazy be- cause he loved Physics, has just discovered some- thing new, Why an atom is an atom or vice versa. Bill Barnett, whose hair you see on all famous shampoo advertisements, had to have a special comb fwirej and comber Cmy, but she was sweety. Mary Lou Nedervelt, Hollywood fashion expert and author of How to become attractive in five easy lessons, was the style setter of the year. Mary Jane Markel, wife of the wealthy Hugh Snodgrass, Wall Street Broker, was voted the girl with the best come hither look in her eyes. David Miller, concert pianist, now on tour in Kansas City, was Northeast's best entertainer in the musical line. Edith Long, Director of Physical Education in the W.A.A.C., was never seen without a bas- ketball or hockey stick in her hand. The third baseman for the Yankees, Don Eye- brows Heinzman, was always batting the breeze in drafting class. Mary Phillips, notable Red Cross and social worker, was always the most enthusiastic person in school when we had any type of a charity cam- paign. . Cameron Woods, hair stylist for prominent so- ciety elites, was practicing his future trade on the manes of his father's horses. Richard Sayles, owner of the international jew- elry syndicate, made his start at Northeast when all the space he had then was his coat lapel. Dale Nelson, reducing expert you hear Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, at 8:30 a. m. on N.E. H.S., was just the guy in the corner in the alge- bra class-he knew nothing, we knew nothing. Lorraine Hays, successor to Elsie Maxwell for giving wonderful receptions, was always on the receiving line, for overtimes and everything. Rosetta Welliver has just completed her inter- view with Hirum Smith, American Governor of Germany. It took her back to her Newswriting days at Northeast. Clifford Sims, newly elected Governor of Mis- souri, was the Irving Berlin of Van Brunt. 107 f' ,f4N-in I K' K7 XX ' 4 xx f In 6 X 1 ' 3 x If 'ing- N.
