NORTHEAST ' S JUNIOR COLLEGE Dorothy Schuepbach President Fred Diebel Vice-President MR. R. V Harmon Junior College Adviser tei tic Lorena Orcutt Secretary Clarence Rupe Giftorian At the request of Superintendent George elcher, permission was granted in Sep- tember, 1929, by the North Central Associa- tion of Secondary Schools and Colleges to conduct an experimental Junior College in the Northeast High School. The supervis- ing committee, consisting of Dr. C. H. Judd and Dr. L. V. Koos of the University of Chicago, and Dr. George Zook, at present Chairman of the American Educational Council, was appointed by the Association. Later Dr. Thomas E. Brenner of the Uni- versity of Illinois took Dr. Zook ' s place. Since then Dr. J. M. Woods of Stephens Col- lege was placed on the committee instead of Dr. Zook. The immediate director was, and is, Mr. A. T. Chapin, Principal of Northeast High School. Mr. Chapin is assisted by Mr. G. W. Davis, Vice-Principal of Northeast, and a carefully selected staff. The Northeast Experiment has attracted wide-spread interest among educators and has undergone searching investigation from many sources. Even though the Experi- ment is being discontinued with gradu- ation in June, the students who have gradu- ated from the New Plan have proved that which Superintendent Melcher believed was possible: namely, that the two upper years of high school and the two lower years of college overlapped so much that they could be combined and completed in three years. The Junior College course cegins in the Junior year of the high school and has three divisions. The Engineering Course requires mathematics each year: college algebra, trigonometry, physics, Engineer- ing drawing, analytics, calculus, and sur- veying. Such other subjects as chemistry, English, machine drawing, descriptive geometry, materials, and analytical me- chanics are included in the requirements. The Liberal Arts Course offers the usual subjects given in the Freshman and Sopho- more years of college, such as English, mathematics, science, social studies, and foreign languages. The Business Department is for those students who expect to follow a business career. This course includes at least twenty 19 Dollie Newlon Reporter Mathew Poppa Sergeant-at-Arms hours of academic college work. To satisfy the demands, the course is divided into three divisions: Accounting, Clerical, and Secretarial. Students are permitted to major in any one of the three divisions or elect a general course. Upon graduation, they can command a position in six to ten different types of work. This arrangement makes possible not only many chances for em- ployment, but also greater opportunity for advancement. The students are qualified for the specialized jobs of large corpora- tions as well as for the general work of a small office. With the class of ' 39, a total of 612 stu- dents will have graduated from the New Plan in the course of its existence. Of the 338 who took the Engineering or Liberal Arts courses, 27 per cent have gone on to college and received their Bachelor ' s De- gree in two years. Of the 168 who have graduated from the Business Department, 85 per cent have secured jobs. The community regrets the passing of this course of study. In their opinion, it has given many boys and girls an opportunity .to come in contact with college work which many otherwise would not have experi- enced. It brings close home to them, also, the privilege of preparing themselves for a business career — a privilege, we believe, not surpassed in Kansas City.
