Presented By The Yearbook Staff Of Northeast High School Pasadena, Maryland Volume III Advisor: Mrs. Paar Artwork: Charles Deckman Photography: Segall-Majestic, Inc. Michael Wootton Foreword When mountain climbing, if the leader thinks it wise for the men to take a step up the steep slope, he cries Adalante to them. Then the team of climbers, joined to each other by a rope around their waists, know that by working together, they can successfully scale the mountain. What a sense of accomplishment must result! We at Northeast all share a common goal of continually endeavoring to progress onward and upward. It is never an easy struggle, and must be met with hard work and determination. Each of us had a mountain to climb this year, not everyone had an immediate success but each of us learned from our experience. Progress was directed in the areas of academics, athletics, business world preparation, and dramatics. Most important, we made progress in learning to function and think productively in our new roles as young adults. In our own directions, not merely north, south, east, or west, but in success, wisdom, knowledge, thought, skill, power, hope, faith, and love, we leave Northeast. SHARING THEIR KNOWLEDGE “While We Teach, We Learn r r Harold N. Zasfrow Principal B.S., Temple; M.A., New York Univ. TO THE CLASS OF 1969: Congratulations! The day you have long been looking for is here. Long years of school work have finally been rewarded with the cherished diploma. I hope you will consider this only the beginning of your education. In school and in life we have much to learn and each of you must continue to strive for a better life in tomorrow's world. Continue to remember that you get out of life what you put into it. The class of '69 is graduating. I hope that there will be pleasant memories of Northeast in your future years. You have taken much of what Northeast is with you. You have also left a part of yourself in the growing tradition of your high school. Good luck! 10 Harold N. Zastrow Smile — when you're feeling happy . Although we didn't win all our games this year, the Northeast Eagles did have some highlights. )oe Brockmeyer, a three year letterman, brightened up the year by rushing over 1,200 yards and scoring 12 touchdowns. |oe was also named to the First Team All-County as a halfback The Eagles also had three boys given honorable mention: Lee Bailey, offensive end; Arthur Asaki, defensive safety; and Tom Sesney, defensive tackle. Football Football at Northeast is coming of age. The ingredients of maturity are becoming more obvious. More boys are coming out The determination, spirit, and desire of these boys grows each year. This year's junior Varsity football team is, as a whole, the best Northeast has ever had. Two of the games we lost were very close and could lust as well have been victories. The other three games' lopsided scores came as a result of being out-manned since the half-time scores were very close. If the football spirit at Northeast continues to build and grow we can consider losing seasons a thing of the past. The game of soccer requires many qualities that need to be developed extensively before a player is ready for the game. Physical dexterity, mental alertness, aggressiveness, team spirit and the determination to win are but a few of these qualities that every member of this year's team possessed. It is quite difficult to start a season with just three weeks of practice with many boys who had never played soccer and none who had played together as a complete working, organized unit; but with the sincerity and determination that everyone possessed, a team evolved. The team practiced hard and played hard and we should be proud of a group of boys that rep- resented our school so well. A rather successful 6 win — 2 loss season placed Northeast in the second berth in the standings, only Vi game be- hind the league leader, Brooklyn Park. Each player recognized his teammates' potential and a confidence and respect for each others' capabilities made the team grow stronger with every game. All classes were represented on the team this year, but class distinctions, one drawback that must be overcome if success is to be the outcome of any sports, were forgotten. Some of the players were switched to positions unfamiliar to them in order to strengthen the team offensively or defensively. Such players as Chuck Schilling, switched from last year's position as lineman to center full back, gave the team the strength it needed in defense. Chuck and Bob Lauterback in the backfield were the keys that locked the door on all the wins enjoyed this year. Bob Geisler in his position as halfback helped considerably, with all the agility and speed that he possessed, to tighten the defense and assist the line on offense. Serving up front on the line where awareness and mobility count most George Garron, |im Clark and Wayne Tyler either assisted or scored to keep the team out in front. It was indeed a pleasure to work with all the boys this season because of the sincerity and cooperation that I received from everyone who participated. After a slow start, the team had several good games. The highlight of the season was our 62-60 victory over Severna Park. The Eagles came from 17 points behind to win in the final 2 seconds with )ohn Ervin's jump shot. |im Ogle and Bob Bonner played very well on defense. On offense, the leading scorers were Dan Stubbs (17 points) and |ohn Ervin (13 points). Bob Loughery had many outstanding games. Basketball This year the I.V. Basketball season was high- lighted by an upset win over Annapolis. Our main goal, of both the Varsity and the lunior Varsity, has been to build spirit in the students of Northeast. We were very happy to see the crowds we had at the games. We built interest, attendance at the games, and general support for all our teams. It is my personal wish that the years to come will see a welcomed growth of spirit, participation, and pride. Some of our other activities included a pizza parlor at the Spring Thing, and the sale of mums at our second Homecoming. We worked to build talent, ability, and experience. IMbB-IMbd has been a year to remember in sports. We wish especially to thank the great Class of '69 for their whole-hearted support of all our Eagle teams throughout the year. Student Council This year the Student Council, under the leadership of Donald Lehr and the guidance of Mr. Ron Hickernell and Mr. Robert Domshick, has begun to establish itself as a working Student Council. Many things were accomplished this year, such as the Spring Thing and the car rally. The Spring Thing was co-sponsored by the Student Council and turned out to be a huge success. It is hoped that it will become an annual event. The Student Council officers worked directly with the representatives and as a result much new legislation was introduced and much was accomplished. It is hoped that next year's Student Council can build on the strong foundation which this year's Council has furnished them. Northeast also held a Regional Meeting at this school for the first time. Kathy Kelly was chairman and it turned out to be a great success. 71 Homecoming Northeast held its second homecoming on a rainy weekend in November. The festivities began on Friday night with an informal welcome. On Saturday, prior to the Northeast- Severna Park football game, the parade marched from Riviera Beach to school. Many organi- zations in the school decorated cars and floats. Half-time activities were highlighted by the crowning of the new queen and her court. The weekend was concluded with a dance featuring Cindy and the Censations. This fair was co-sponsored and co-organized by the Student Council, the PTA, and the Booster's Association. The fair lasted for two days, beginning on a Friday afternoon and ending on Saturday night. As shown in the pictures, the clubs and organizations ran various game booths. Food was in abundance. The PTA sold cokes and hot dogs, while the Cheerleaders made pizza, the Sophomore Class sold french fries, and the FTA opened an ice cream parlor. There were old-time movies in the auditorium and a Battle of the Bands on Friday night in the gym. The weekend was climaxed by a dance on Saturday night featuring Cindy and the Censations. We came out ahead in the annual candy drive and the Variety Show produced a large turnout. The One-Act Play Night saw sophomores with the best play, the best actress, and the best supporting actress awards. After summer vacation we stepped into our roles as juniors. Our first project was the Christmas Dance featuring the Chaparelles. One-Act Play Night again saw us with awards. We won best supporting actor and actress and best actor. The highlight of the year was the Junior Prom. The band. Tommy Vann and the Professionals, provided us with an enjoyable evening. Thoughts of graduation constantly filled our minds throughout our senior year. Receiving the high school diploma is perhaps the most rewarding goal of twelve years of formal education. Much was achieved academically, athletically, and in other phases of school life. This was definitely a year of firsts. The senior play “Permission Impossible was unique in that this was the first year the play was written by seniors, with the aid of Mr. Griffin. We had the opportunity to vote on the color of our graduation gowns, and the seniors planned and carried off a senior hook day. We also suffered the consequences! Climaxing the year was the Senior Banquet on June 4, 1969. Frankie and the Spindles livened up the Senior Prom at Emerald Gardens on June 6,1969. Commencement exercises, |une 8, 1969 brought the 68-69 year to a happy and memorable end for seniors. May this section bring to you pleasant memories!
