His great obiective is one of unity, the unity of all Christendom under one head. But this over-all unity must start from The bottom as well as the top if iT is ever To be an accomplished fact and no mere hopeful guest. The oneness Pope John desires so much demands a knowledge of the faith and the practical application of that learning by its members. The North Catholic graduate must be one with the Church, united with fellow-Catholics as well as fellow-graduates. He must be one with them in mind and thought, heart and spirit. Only then will he be able to take his place in the unity of all Christendom, the aim so dear to our Holy Father. JOHN CARDINAL 0'HARA On August 28, 1960, Cardinal O'l-lara ended some 45 years of priestly service in this world. This city mourns his passing. From his studies in Montevideo, Notre Dame and Washington, D. C., he came to Phila- delphia tirst as a priest, then as an Archbishop. During all these years he became known as an outstanding Catholic educator and in 1958 was elected to the Sacred College of Cardinals. New schools and class- rooms have arisen under his leadership, more boys and girls than ever before have had the opportunity ot attending a Catholic High School. Yet, while foster- ing the new he never forgot the old stanclbys, the Cardinal's interest in North never lagged. THE MOST REVEREND CLETUS J. BENJAMIN, D.D. Auxiliary Bishop of Philadelphia ADMI ISTRATORS THEIR CONCER THE MOST REVEREND FRANCIS J. FUREY, D.D. Auxiliary Bishop of Philadelphia RIGHT REVEREND MONSIGNOR EDWARD M. REILLY, J.C.D. Superintendeni of Philadelphia Archdioceson Schools EDUCATIO F YOUTH RIGHT REVEREND MONSIGNOR JOHN J. GRAHAM, Ph.D. Superinlenden? of Special Schools RECENTLY CHOSEN AS SUPERIOR of all Oblates in America, Father Conmy has already contributed much to North Catholic. Father, who was cl member of North Catholic's first graduating class, has always been an active alumnus. After entering the Oblates Fr. Conmy studied both in Europe and in Washington, D. C., however, when Father's name is mentioned there is only one place of which an Oblate thinks-Maryland. Yes, the Oblate Novitiate at Childs and Fr. Conmy have been synonymous over the years. His role there has been one of the most important in the Oblates, affecting not only the priests and seminarians themselves but thousands of their students as well. Often we have heard of the Salesian spirit, the Salesian ideal. It is difficult if not impossible to put into words. Yet that was Fr. Conmy's iob for many years. How well he succeeded by word and example is easily seen in the Oblates' great growth here in this country. Fr. Conmy gave the Salesian spirit to the Oblates, he started the pro- gram that affects every boy in an Oblate school, every parishioner hear- ing an Oblate sermon, every person who meets an Oblate. To continue this work even more effectively, Father was made Provincial of the American Province. For this we offer our congratulations and our prayers-that his influence will spread even further-bringing men to God in the Salesian Way. OBLATE UPERIORS VERY REVEREND DOMINIC BALDUCELLI, O.S.F.S. FATHER BALDUCELLI, the Superior General of the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales, makes his residence in Rome where he supervises the activities of the Oblates throughout the world. Since he visited our school three years ago, he has held a high place in our esteem. His wisdom and holiness. impressed us very much, and we look forward to his return. VERY REVEREND WILLIAM WARD, 0.S.F.S. AN ALUMNUS OF NORTH CATHOLIC, Father Ward has returned to his Alma Mater to assume the position of Religious Superior of the Oblate Faculty. Formerly Father Ward had been assistant principal of North Catholic until 1951 when he was appointed principal of St. Francis De Sales High School in Toledo, Ohio. We welcome your return to North Catholic and thank you for all you have given us this year both in and out of the classroom. THEIR LIVES DEVOTED TO ACQLIIRI AN COIVIMUNICATI G TRUTH VERY REV. JOHN F. TOCIK, O.S.F.S. LAST SUMMER prior to the opening of school, Fr. Tocik, our rector for eleven years, was promoted to the newly created post of supervisor of all Oblate education. All of us, Father, who have come to know you as our friend and learn from you as our rector and teacher thank you for these years. We shall long remember and try to imitate the example of strength, simplicity, and charity you have left with us. May God bless you in your new work. THE F LINDATIQ REVEREND EDWARD CONLIN, 0.S.F.S. AN OBLATE PRIEST for thirty years, Father Edward Conlin, our rector, is a native of Phila- delphia. He is no stranger to us, having served as assistant principal here from 1949 until 1958 when he was transferred to Niagara Falls, New York. During these nine years Fr. Conlin established a reputation among all his students as a most enthusiastic and energetic priest-one who will help any boy at any time. This year has shown that Fr. Conlin has not changed in this regard and we welcome his return. Thank you for your many ettorts to shape us into Salesian gentlemen, Father. May God bless you. 1 REVEREND EDWIN CARLIN, O.S.F.S. REVEREND .IAMES BUTLER, O.S.F.S. PRINCIPAL REVEREND THOMAS P. WALSH, O.S.F.S. Officially, Father Walsh is Vice-Rector of Northeast Catholic High School, but to the students and the alumni he is much more. Having spent much of his life associated with North, he has become an integral part of the school. Through his untiring zeal, Father preserves the Salesian Spirit upon which the school was founded, and instills it in the hearts of the student body. North Catholic pays tribute to a man who has spent most of his life making men of the future out of North Catholic boys. OF OUR FUTURE After two years at North, Father Carlin has met many modern Huckleberry Finns among the student body. Calling upon all his talent for sleuthing, he has succeeded in bringing many of these culprits to iustice. He has shown forth avid enthusiasm in the discipline and training of youth, placing an emphasis on efficiency. As head of the Latin department, Father is able to give scholastic and spiritual assistance to many students. The entire student body appreciates his vigorous and dedicated Scllesian Spirit. ASSISTAN S Newly appointed to an undesirable yet vitally important ottlce, Father Butler has borne the burden of Prefect of Discipline with untiring effort. In a task requiring both firmness along with deep interest and understanding of youth, Father Butler has done an admirable iob in and out of school. Conse- quently he has been very successful in his one and only aim-to help us. There are sacerdotal duties which must be fulfilled, such as saying Mass, admin- istering the sacraments to the students, and traveling far and near on ministry. Add to these a rigorous teaching schedule, plus time-consuming extra- curriculars, and you have an idea of an Oblate's daily activities. These Oblates are molders of Catholic gentlemen, constructors of character and right-conscience, and dedicated laborers for the Faith. They have trained us in the sciences, arts, and social graces needed for future accomplishment. Most important of all, they have instilled in us the Salesian Spirit, a way of life in which, for the love of God, actions are done extra- ordinarily well. Andleven our most insignificant thoughts are directed to God. We have taken hold of this Spirit, and will never let it go-TENUI NEC DIMITTAM. FATHER WILLIAM CLEARY FATHER RICHARD Religion, Civics Spanish O SALUTARIS HOSTlA fills the faculty house chapel as our Oblates ioin in solemn Benediction. This facet of community life is not familiar to the students, but is an all-important function of these men of God. ..-...- f S 3, m-16i,3Eh3' V 1 4 1 i .4-' Cn 1 1 my -wr, ar- T1 hun' ,. 3 ,z ,, 5 5 ,.,, ,ax 1115? v 'fi , V :Q , , ,, 4. ogg ei J' I . The unending concern of the Oblates has been a maior con- tribution to our training. Always willing to give i personal assistance, they are the backbone of North Catholic. In any important vocation there are always apprentices, and for the highest possible vo- cation, that of the priesthood, the scholastics are the hope for the future. Devoting their lives to God, the Misters at North have be- come a symbol of prospective priests. ONE OF THE MOST TIME CONSUMING and important tasks is that of the Registrar. CHRlST'S JOURNEY TO CALVARY is followed each Friday during Lent through the Stations of the Cross. ln the chapel, Fr. Richard Cleary describes the agony suffered by Our Lord in the last moments before His death. Students who seek to strengthen Their spiritual lives find ample opportunity in North Catholic's many religious ac- tivities. The daily lunch-period Masses give the students an opportunity to receive the grace of regular confession and communion. The weekly scheduled school-Masses are another means of spiritual merit. The annual retreat, a time for the soul's spring clean- ing, is the highlight ot all religious activities. During the 'first three days ot Holy Week the students detach them- selves from material interests and converse with God, begs ging His light and guidance to perceive the true purpose and meaning of life. Many a boy has changed his whole outlook during these three days of grace. Visits to the chapel, short prayers at the Fatima shrine- these and many other religious activities during the school year assure the foundation ot habits and principles which we can take with us, practicing them to great advantage in the challenging years ahead. THIS IS MY BLOOD. These words transform ordinary wine into the Blood of Christy the Sacrifice is man's greatest act of worship. At this moment, Christ's crucifixion on Calvary is re-enacted at weekly Mass. BLESS ME, FATHER. Father Rush administers the sacrament of Penance to a student seeking closer union with God and the strength to imitate the Oblate motto, Live Jesus. SPIRITUAL NOURISHMENT is often received by students at the lunch-period Mass. By attending Mass and receiving the Eucharist, they maintain both healthy souls and sound bodies. THE ROAD TO SALVATION is not an easy one. Fr. Kinniry impresses this upon the members of Senior 5 while discussing the responsibilities of Marriage. Through instruction and advice, every student develops the precious gift he received at baptism-the gift of faith. KEEPING IN STEP with Catholic education, our seniors participate in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. One Religion class each week is held in the auditorium before Christ on the altar. Sophomores pursuing this subject have an op- portunity to explore the interesting world of microscopic lite, follow the growth of a seed into a mammoth redwood, and learn the se- crets of the complex human nervous system. Of greater importance is the knowledge of God's natural gifts to man and their proper functions. Our capable instructors have suc- ceeded in integrating science and Christian thought, which knowledge will certainly assist us in later life. THE AMOEBA IS A SHAPELESS MASS, points out Mr. Lauletta to his Sophomore biology class. Visual aids in lab and lecture make even the little umoebo available for study. q- W r .L. i , . 5 A 1. ky G A :Xia f ' z 'frU f M ff Risk I v f 1' V .. RED INK tills the ledger pages as tomorrow's accountants record some bad debts. These iuniors, under the direction of Father Eisen- barth, will soon master the basic principles of this complex subiect. DEAR SIR:Father Keeleydictates a letter at 120 words a minute to students of Senior 13. Steve Conn, James Costello, and Charles Deal equal Father's accelerated pace through shorthand, a skill they will all use in the near future. I its MAPS OUT! Today Fr. Cleary and his Junior Civics class outline the boundaries of Pennsylvania. All this provides background for the heart of the course-a study of our state government, and our duties toward it. HISTORY A GOVERNMENT The global threat ot communism and the domestic problems gripping our nation stress the importance of a thorough grounding in the principles and structure of a free and pro- ductive society. Consequently every student at North Catholic is required to take courses in Civics, History, and National Problems be- fore he graduates. Here knowledge essential to good citizenship may be gained-knowl- edge of the Constitution, of the human rights it guarantees and the duties it demands from each of us. Today, more than ever before, we must understand and appreciate our demo- cratic form of life it for no other reason than to protect and continue it. FUTURE VOTERS of Senior 3 listen as Father McNally dis- cusses the current economic situaiion. With knowledge ac- quired in their study of National Problems, they will be better prepared to fulfill their responsibilities in our democracy. Q x X 4 Mew? ' iw ' ' Wfsff H V by ,Q .. V ECHANICAL DRAWI G ONE FEATURE of Catholic education is its well-roundedness. Not only should our mind be trained to think but also we should learn certain skills to prepare for the future. One such skill is Mechanical Drawing, As the sign on the wall indicates, Hthimking men prefer Father Frieler's Mechanical Drawing class to all others. Under his direction the iuniors and seniors progress from ink blotches to fine drafts- men but only after long hours at the drawing board. .,. Thanks to his individual instruction any boy who wants it has ample opportunity to become a good musician while at North. THE NEW MUSIC just came in and now's the time to sort it and find out just who is going to play what. Fr. Palko's iob is to select the music-the boys have the iob of playing it. Carrying all of that future knowledge around in a bag and still being on time for class is a chronic problem for every underclassman. This is especially true for Tom Henry, whose book bag requires both hands. NORTH CATHOLIC DERCLASSM N The underclassmen represent the future of North Catholic tradition. As the years pass they will become aware of the Falcon spirit and as- sume their part in it. It is now that these future seniors are molded and solidified into North Catholic gentlemen, and the impressions and ideas which they are now forming will be the foundation for their future success. EXCEPT FOR THE SKEPTIC ON THE RIGHT everyone seems to be enioying his mother's culinary efforts. The next attack will be on the books-to finish up last night's homework. i Eb' V 1? Without the able direction of this fine coaching staff, we could never have gone so far. THE DEFENSIVE SKILL of iunior quarterback ioe Rafter again comes in handy. This interception set up the scoringll play which helped the Falcons defeat our archrivals and Public League Champs, the Pioneers of Frankford. CRUNCH would be the sound reverberating through the stadium as this play against Father Judge unfolds. Alert playing enabled us to hand our sister-school a 36 to 20 defeat. HEY, THAT'S MY FOOTBALL, says a Little Explorer as a flock of Falcons converge on their prey. This fumble by the championship La Salle squad was recovered by alert number 43 i?l FOCTBALL THE NUMBER ONE MAN in N.C. athletics is Fr. Daniel Mclernan. Whether directing from the soc- cer bench or working behind the scenes, our new athletic director was present for every athletic con- test, reioicing with the teams in victory and con- soling them in defeat. TYPICAL OF HIS DEFENSIVE ABILITY is this ception by Joe Rafter. Plays such as this Joe an outstanding safety man. However, inter- made even such determination was unable to overcome Saint James, who downed our Falcons 18 to 0. HEAD COACH, Mr. Joseph Lauletta, has taken over a new squad and has formed them into a playing team which shows great promise for the years to come. Under the direction of our new coach, Mr. Joseph Lauletta, i961 Falcon team has performed quite well. Although we not attain the championship, our record was a fine tribute to Lauletta in his initial year on Encee's sport scene. FOOTBALL LITTLE PUBLIC RECOGNITION goes to the iunior varsity team, but their unrelenting efforts on the field are proof of their enthusiasm for the game of football. Here, Ernie D'Angelo, one of these unheralded members of the J.V. squad, fights hard to gain yardage and also to build a bright football future for North. ANOTHER THREE POINT PLAY for the Falcons as Tony Gielda drives through. These drives brought us close to a big upset over the champs when the Fr. Judge team came to our gym early in the season. North played a good first half but slowed down in the second as the league's second place team went on to win. the Tommy More guard had other ideas and so we settled for a foul. Danny was the real hustler among the senior mem- bers of the squad and got in plenty of drives this season. A HALF STEP ON HIS MAN and the ball in Joe Rafter's left hand means iust one thing-that long drive down the middle with a quick pass or an easy layup at the end. These Falconians sharpen up their sharps and flats in a practice iam session. The flashing wand of Director Ross Wyre livens the tempo of their choruses and arpeggios. ALWAYS ON THE MARCH is the Falcon Spirit of the Band members. Only con- stant practice and hard work could pro- duce such fine coordination and timing. As representatives of North Catholic in music, our band has made an untiring eftort to be best. Their lively en- thusiasm is evidenced by their long practice sessions in school and at home, and their ability is displayed both in musical composition and precision marching. The band has grown steadily in number this year and now it is nearly full strength. PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT is shown in this formation by the school bond. Come rain or shine, they are always willing to do their part in making the football games enioyable entertainment for all. These meetings are essential for the understanding and cooperation of all concerned. KEEPING LATE HOURS-Father Butler takes time out from his busy schedule to talk over n problem with Bill Huackes and an interested third party. A LUCID EXPLANATION of the student's difficulties is given by Mr. Mokluk, result- ing in better teacher-parent understanding. At North the semi-annual Parent-Teachers Association Meeting provides the clos- est union between the parents and the school faculty. The problems ofthe students, whether disciplinary or scholastic, are discussed with the parents to help them bet- ter guide their sons to the solution. The crowded auditorium and long lines reflect the interest of the parents and the desire of their boys to improve. THE WHY'S AND WHEREFORE'S of these bad report marks are explained by Father Lynch. Through the PTA, bonds of cooperation are cemented between the teacher and parent by their mutual interest in the student. TIES WITH OUR ALMA MATER are never severed when such an active alumni association as North Catholic's is in operation. Gala events like the annual Alumni Dance keep members regularly in touch with North and old North friends. The success ot a school is always reflected in the success of graduates. North Catholic is proud of its many successful alumni and their loyal spirit evidenced long after graduation day. The Northeast Catholic Alumni Associa- tion, since its establishment in 1929, has spon- sored many social, religious, and charitable events and we hope that this active interest finds response in the class of '6l, AT THE COMMUNION RAIL five hundred alumni attending the Memorial Mass receive Holy Communion from Alumni Moderator, Father John Tye. COLLEGE IGHT COLLEGE NIGHT offers a unique op- portunity for all North Catholic stu- dents to meet the representatives of many area colleges and to discuss various aspects of campus life. ,A E BUT IS IT CO-EDUCATIONAL? asks an interested prospective collegiate. The visiting college counselor wonders iust what it is that interests him. SENIGRS TOMORRCW GOING FORTH TO SERVE SPIRITUALLY INTELLECTUALLY H CULTURALLY ALBERT BANFE In his capacity as President of the class of 1961, AI has en- deavoredfto maintain the honor of North Catholic by being a first-rate representative of the entire student body. ln this he has succeeded. His leadership and example this year re- ceived both the respect of his fellow seniors, and the admira- tion of the underclassmen. May God bless his every under- taking in the future. CLASS LEADER KENNETH CLARK Ken's friendly way and sincerity of purpose have won for him many friends among the senior class, the underclassmen and the faculty. His election as Vice-president reflects the con- fidence his fellow students place in him. Ken's loyal support of North Catholic, and his enthusiasm for all activities carried on under its roof could well serve as an example for all of us. Each year thousands of students throughout our nation enter the National Merit Scholarship compe- tition. Of these thousands only a select few, the most outstanding in academic and extracurricular achievement, are awarded scholarships. This year three North Catholic graduates have gained the position of finalists in this nation-wide competition. We are rightfully proud of each one of them and grateful for the great honor they have brought our school. g W... , A1 fm.. Q-V, THE NUMBER ONE scholastic position in the senior class is held by ROBERT KUBIAK whose four-year average is 93.87. EQUALLY COMMENDABLE, the number two position is held by JOSEPH PETTO who maintained a 93.04 average. ACADEMIC LEADERS Qian.: WP P CW 've br' 'Q' JOHN FLANAGAN GREGORY McMANEMIN CHARLES WOLF ME F TH YE PHILIP PRESS DOING WHAT IS RIGHT iust because it is rightfthat is a lofty ideal, difficult to achieve. Yet it must be achieved by a solid core of students in any school if that school is to be worthwhile and good. Leading the group which does realize this ideal here at North is Philip Press. The classroom is for study, for knowledge and in the classroom Phil received honorable mention in the National Merit Examination. After class there is time to develop other interests, contributing greatly to the school at the same time. Phil chose to spend countless hours working as Senior Editor of the '61 Falcon and here he did much for his fellow-senfors. Just as North Catholic depends on responsible men like Phil Press, so the world of tomorrow depends on its Men of the Year. CHARLES WOLF NATIONAL MERIT FINALIST, '61 Falcon Literary Editor, and senior sectional president are only a few of Charley Wolf's achievements here at North. All know of Charley's talents and the quiet way he uses them, but only those few who have worked intimately with Charley know of his most outstanding quality-an out and out love for hard work and accomplish- ment. Here is the reason for his success-the reason for anyone's success. Charley has learned a lesson many never learn and has taught it by example to all who have tried to keep up with him. Over the years God will no doubt ask much from Charley, and with this spirit of sacrifice he will always meet the test-a true Man of the Year. .IOE WALICKI QUICK TO SMILE but seriously thorough-that's .loe Walicki. Working with him on the Good News or watching him at his guard post, one can almost feel his sense of purpose and responsibility. Here is a young man who can be trusted to do well all that is required of him- and do it cheerfully in the bargain. Such traits make Joe a valuable member of the senior class, a friend worth knowing, and example for all of us-in short a Man of the Year. CASMIR WITKOWSKI NORTH CATHOLIC again adds another name to her list of outstanding athletes-Casmir Witkowski. On the gridiron Dutchy combined wise, hard-fought football with team spirit and sportsmanship-a combina- tion that won him the All-Catholic Sportsmanship trophy. Off the grid- iron-in the classroom, the corridor, and the cafeteria, we at North have seen in Dutchy not only a sportsman but a serious student, a true Salesian gentleman for us to imitate. We wish then to present our own award-the title, Man of the Year. MIKE KEOUGH IN STATURE Mike Keough is small but in terms of accomplishment- in scholarship and extracurriculars, Mike is anything but small. In a quiet unassuming manner he has consistently attained the honor roll and fulfilled his duty on the traffic squad. Mike's greatest contribution to North, however, rests in his work as editor-in-chief of the 6'l Falcon, a position requiring leadership and dependability, but most of all, endless hours of hard work.. All these and more Mike gave generously and certainly deserves the title, Man of the Year. JOSEPH GABOR JOE GABOR'S six feet-three inches are reason enough to call him the Big Man on North's football and basketball games this year. But a more significant if less tangible reason is his desire to compete and win for North any time he was called upon, under any circumstances, at practice or game time. His willingness to contribute whatever talent he could to the team and then develop this talent by long hours of hard drill made Joe a key man in North's sports world this year. He is a worthy recipient of the title, Man of the Year. JIM HIGGINS in his capacity as Secretary of the Senior Class has worked on problems of his office for a good many after school hours throughout the year. Jim, we as a class are grateful to you for this time and elTorl and wish to thank you for all of your contributions to the Class of 1961. SENIOR SECTION PRESIDENTS: Thomas Rakowski, Sr. 1, John Buczek, Sr. 6, Stephen Komada, Sr. 9, John De Sandro, Sr. 11, John Reuther, Sr. 5, Kenneth Biddle, Sr. 77 Anthony Curcio, Sr. 10, Lawrence Fee, Sr. 3, Russell Maginnis, Sr. 27 Joseph Gabor, Sr. 4, Albert Danley, Sr. 85 Patrick Troisi, Sr. 12, Richard Kubacki, Sr. 13. THROUGH THE GENEROSITY of the Senior Class Fr. Kelly, Moderator, and Anthony Aspite, Treasurer, kept busy working i . . . by Fr. Kelly here is only a tiny portion of that offered by him to all of us seniors throughout the year both individually and as a class. Each senior sectional president is elected by his fellow students to act as the spokesman for his section. These men are known throughout the school as the spark plugs of the activities in respective classes. Their leadership in the class not only helps Fr. Kelly in his work as senior moderator but also serves as a corner stone upon which Salesian spirit is developed in the student body. Much of the success of the mission col- lection, the card party, and the senior socials de- pends on them and so to them should go much of the credit.
