The youthful and vigorous spirit of almost 4000 young Catholic gentlemen finds its way into our corri- dors and classrooms, on the stage, in the gym, around the track at Kensing- ton and Torresdale Avenues. The daily accompaniment of whistles, sounds of trolleys, els and trucks does not diminish the enthusiasm of youth. The neighbor- hood industry seems to add to the in- dustriousness of the lad from North. He is a part of them. They are a part of him. We are a part of North. WHO? FROM WHOM? . . The largest boys Catholic high in the world with a graduating class of 1075 unites with one heart and mind to make nt the best Of all nationalities we are truly Cath o IC and we are one In apprecua tion of our parents and our pastors who have made such a splendid opportunity for a Catholic education possible G rowlflg ' l Df- Wim. As a graduate of our friendly cross-town rivals, West Cath- olic, we have every wish that he may suc- ceed in all endeavors. May he continue to wear the pectoral cross with as much dis- tinction as in the past. lbs 1. Qs.- X. I' ARCHBISHOP O'HARA The Archdiocese of Philadelphia is indeed for- tunate to have as its spiritual head Archbishop John O'Hara. This eminent scholar who has done much to further Catholic education in the United States has demonstrated his interest in North Catholic time and time again. Recently the Archdiocese has embarked on a far seeing program of educational expansion. That it is destined to succeed is due in no small measure to our beloved Archbishop-brilliant scholar, remarkable educator, able shepherd of his flock, humble priest of God. BISHOP McCORMICK As Pastor of the vibrant parish of St. Stephen which has a long standing tradition of being at the top of everything in Philadelphia, Bishop McCormick naturally comes in con- tact with North very often. His manner and able administration have won for him the admiration of all he meets. We pray for him a long and happy service in the vine- yard of the Lord. -3- Hierarchy OU' X 1 , X 'I ,le 5 2 f ECCE SACERDOS MAGNUS! In the times of great stress God raises up a Moses to lord his people. Such a Moses has been Pope Pius XII. He has desired to lead the world to the radiant crown of Mary. This year saw our beloved Pontilf wage a war against Death. For a time we thought the light of Rome would be snutfed out. While we at North prayed, for his recovery, his brave spirit rallied him back to health. Let it be our constant prayer that the remainder of his pontificate be as he so ardently desires. 3:1- SL I sf I ' 2 ', -s, ..,.,, r :wif high? ,.--'- -we-I ' ' 2.5:Qf W, fi. They have in- stilled into us a devout love for God and Mary, His Mother, and a deep regard for the rights of our fellow man. By their teaching we have been prepared for our future, not only in this earthly life, but, more important, they have taught us by word and example the primary end for which we have been created. Although cen- turies have passed since his death, St. Francis de Sales and his spirit still live in the every day life of the Oblate Fathers. They have dedicated their lives to God and to the teaching of His children. We shall never forget them and their work in our prayers. FATHER BALDUCELLI The Very Reverend Dominic Balducelli, who resides in Rome, is the Superior General of the Oblates. The spirit of this fine priest we find reflected in all the Oblate Fathers. We are looking forward to a visit from Father during the next school year. FATH Canon J. Francis Tucker . . . To the first American Oblate, North must seem like home for he conducted our wonderful retreats for twenty years. He is now at Monte Carlo, Monaco, and we under- stand that he is as well loved there as at North. I . xl Ublafes of Sf. Francik de Sales FATHER LAWRENCE KNEBELS is the Religious Superior of our Oblate teachers. Patience and understanding are virtues, and Father is a very virtuous priest. He makes use of these virtues in instructing us in the intricacies of Algebra. THE VERY REVEREND WILLIAM D BUCKLEY is the provincial of the Oblates in America Father's headquarters are in nearby Wllmmg ton. He is a former member of our faculty and typifies the Salesian way of life. -J Htl f Admllllkffdflbh xx nn ll-R As principal of the largest boys' Catholic high school, our rector, Father John Tocik, has a tremendous task to perform. During 1 our four years at North, Father Tocik has Q: served as a considerate and helpful leader at all times. May God bless you and help you in your future tasks, Father. We shall always remember you. lm fv-Q S l 4 Our vice-rector, Father Edward Con- lin, is always active about things for North. A valuable asset to the faculty, he possesses a dynamic spirit, the envy of all. Leading us at Mass or working in the office, he is untiring in his task to put North on the top. Many thanks, Father! DIISCIPWFIE ahh ' TEMPERING JUSTICE with charity, Father Walsh, Father O'Neill, and Father Martin labor in the true Oblate spirit of kindness and gentleness in their roles of disciplinarians. Through their efforts and sensible rules we emerged from school as truly good Catholic gentlemen practicing the virtues as expressed in the Oblate way of life. Acting as Junior Moderator, Father Walsh made our interests his only interests. Father O'Neill worked with us in our after- school activities to help us form sound minds in sound bodies, and Father Martin was the combination of Salesian sternness and meekness. Our thanks to you, disciplinarians, for helping us to become men. 'buf' Rector of our annex at St. Joachim's, Father Reidy uses the patience and counsel of St. Francis de Sales regarding the antics of our yearlings. Due to Father and his able colleagues, our Freshmen are filled with the true Falcon spirit and a founda- tion of Oblate teaching. - - V ' , Kia -A - V 2 v , W, 6' . VV? When we entered North we were but empty shells of empty hearted men . . . and we had to be filled to satisfy the desires of our nature . . . We began to feel the strength of God being established in our character. We needed these men of God, these Oblates, these teachers . . . They knew long months before that the third declension and the binomial theorem would get no further than the pages of our text books . . . and yet they were determined that we must be taught . . . They taught us more than the printed words. They showed us how to live . . . both during school hours and during the more pleasant after hours . . . As Juniors we delved deeply into the Ten Commandments and the Precepts of the Church in order to answer this question. In our Senior year we studied Apologetics as a means of strengthening our own faith and explaining it to others. Here Father Kinniry proves to Senior 22 that the Church is Apostolic. CATHOLIC TRADITION was explained to us as Freshmen. As Sophomores we learned how the Church heroically withstood persecution and heresy, and how the Mass came to its present form. With these basic fundamentals we were able to take on a deeper understanding of the Faith of Our Fathers. At the board, Danz, Junior 20, is explaining the preternatural gifts. Lectures and labs go hand in hand to teach us the laws of nature. Meters and liters, mirrors and magnifying glasses helped to make all the aspects of physics a little clearer. Juli. Blblogy ..... Father Flynn is ringing a bell in a vacuum for Junior 9. LAB DAY was awaited eagerly each week for its many inter- esting experiments. Under the guidance of Brother Arthur we made use of the knowledge gained in lecture. Brother Arthur is helping Junior 9 to see the expansion of metal caused by heat. At the close of a very successful season we could look back at a great record of remaining on top of the Catholic League with eleven wins, three losses. And with a sportsman's heart we gave up in defeat after a third meeting with West Catholic. Y Successful Season ff ED SCULLIN, in his second year as mentor, led our great mighty-mite team to first place in the Catholic League competitions and a berth in the Shaughnessy playoffs with an impressive ll-3 record. But once more the playoff iinx pre- vented the Falcons from capturing the title. Our hats are off, however, in salute to Mr. Scullin for a iob exceedingly well done in face of a height obstacle that would have cowed many a lesser man. .Mi 1 lj 2-4, LK K lx fr . Kkhe BUDDY KLINE Throughout the Catholic League season it was our hustling little captain, Buddy Kline, who kept the go, go, go spirit preva- lent in our Falcon Five. Buddy took the team in hand, setting up our offensive plays as well as all defensive maneuvers. Mr. Mighty Mite took particular pride in faking out the oppo- sition then driving in for a timely lay-up. Almost infallible on foul lines, our speedy captain was above par on his set-shots as well. His 250 points, which led the team and placed him among the top ten scorers in the Catholic League, iust about sums up Buddy's basketball achievements. Marshdff JACK MARSHALL A key man in the Falcon attack, Fiery Jack Marshall was a demon when driving through the opposition for a lay-up. His one- handed stab from side court ranked with the best of them. No laggard from the foul mark, Bob amassed a total of 125 points through some real nifty shooting. Our Annual Communion Breakfast carved another niche in a long series of successful Alumni endeavors, as the 'Old Grads revisited the scene of their high school days. They drank that toast of kindness as happy memories supplemented an excellent meal. Reminiscence of bygone days mingled with speeches to create a general air of good feeling. As each graduate left he took with him a new batch of memories to add to his treasure trove of boyhood remembrances. Not to be forgotten were our most welcomed guests, Cosey Morley and Jack Whittaker who proved themselves very amiable speakers. img ' 1 gn-. .5 i f 2 U X A 'U uf fy-Tw 1-fqfx 4- I , ' gif 1 WMA f f yf.1,,-, ' , . , J ' A-rja 4.31 3 X A '., Ngzixrg-5511? You made our lives with thine accord And with Jesus, your son, Our Lord. Now as your year comes to a close, Your sons at North on you repose. PRINCES OF MARY! As our voices rose in unison to Hail, Holy Queen, our rector, Father Tocik, crowned Mary, Queen of North Catholic. Into this wreath of flowers was woven our 150,000 prayers, eiaculations, masses, and rosaries -our spiritual crown to Mary! We came dressed in our finest for this special day of Mary's and for her, our Mother, we kept silence throughout the dayfa small wonder in itself. When the final act of our love for Mary---Benediction and the Coronation itself --- rolled around we were brimming with peace and hap- piness for a iob well done. Our yearbook theme was to establish the North gentleman. Bob, you have written about all the others. You are, as our editor-in-chief, responsible for this book. You are the personilication of the word 'gentleman.' Keep living, Bob, as you do now! . . . Our Lord's Blessing . . . Father Dultield. LATE SLIPS AND CHEERFUL smiles were always available in the annex's office. We owe a debt of gratitude to Mrs. Vera Connelly for her untiring efforts and endless patience that kept the Freshmen running smoothly. xr.-5 WE HAVE REACHED THE END, and yet it is only the beginning. What memories fill our hearts during this holy sacrifice'--of teachers who ask only one thing, to give and not count the cost --of moments of mirth fof times of despair. It is with mixed emotions, ioy and nostalgia, that we watch the priest turn to chant the 'Ite Missa Est. . . .to bring a measure of light to a world groping in darkness. We pray that we may fill our mission with distinction, and so to bring honors and glories to North Catholic. 1 f a L Q ii -:xr J Q 5 -. Q B..
