LENORD-EST VOLUME VII 1962 PUBLISHED BY Yearbook Staff of Northeast Bradford Junior-Senior High School Editors Deborah Hale Preston Edsell Sponsors Mr. DeAngelis Mr. Driscoll FOREWORD And God said, ’Let there be light: ' and there was light. And God saw the light that it was good; and God divided the light from the dark¬ ness. If fears, superstitions, and prejudices are the offspring of the dark world of ignorance; the light of knowledge then becomes the birthplace of valor, understanding, and tol¬ erance. The light of knowledge is the theme of this yearbook. Our parents first shared their light of knowledge with us. Then the community shared its light with us in the form of teachers, schools, and churches. One of their goals is that we should receive as much light as we can absorb, for they believe that knowledge will light our future. Because the future is unknown, knowledge is needed to illuminate it. Our cover is a stylized sunburst or a modern symbol of the light of knowledge. Our division pages are candles, the long recognized symbol of light. They sym¬ bolize that knowledge which is available to us today. The Editors IN MEMORIAM Vaughn Jones has been a familiar figure in the school and community life of this area for many years. Many are the students and adults alike who will remember the cheery Goodmorning and Goodnight which he always had on the tip of his tongue while driving the school bus for several years. In 1956 Vaughn took over the work as custodian in the LeRaysville Elementary School where his kindly smile and pleasant disposition aided both students and teachers alike over the rough spots which so often arise. In April of 1958 Vaughn joined us at the High School as Chief Custodian. Since then we have come to look upon him with admiration and respect. No words could more adequately or appropriately express our thoughts as to the type of man Vaughn was than the following quotations: With Malice toward none; with charity for all. Thou wert my guide, philosopher, and friend. Therefore we the yearbook staff, on behalf of the students, teachers, and personnel of the Northeast Bradford High School, wish to dedicate this yearbook to the memory of Vaughn C. Jones. BOARD OF EDUCATION FRONT ROW: Ferris Alger, Karl Snyder, Irma Keir, Eva Chaffee, Walter Kolaga, Ruli- son Green SECOND ROW: Chester Hale, Manville Cook, Clayton Canfield, Emerson Abell, Arthur Painter THIRD ROW: Floyd Robinson, John Milner, Emmett Manchester, Edwin Upham, Audra Allyn, Donald Sampson LAST ROW: Donald Boardman, Duane Lines, Claife Hutchinson, Ernest Kuhlman, Everett Green TO THE CLASS OF 1962 Now you are Seniors! It is the fulfillment of a long cherished dream, a goal sought and reached. As you prepare now to extend your horizons and strive tor goals more lofty, we extend to you our sincere thanks for the honorable way in which you have conducted yourselves at Northeast High. We are proud of the class of ' 62 and know that your high ideals and your zeal in striving always for the best will make our troubled world a better place in which to live. To those of you who are going on to higher education, we sincerely hope that your years spent in our schools have properly prepared you, both in knowl¬ edge and in attitude, for the tasks that lie ahead. We are equally desirous that those of you wno are going directly into your chosen vocation, whatever it may be, find that our schools have properly educated your minds and your hearts to enable you to reap the fullest measure of benefit and happiness for yourselves and your fellow men. Karl Snyder, President Northeast Bradford Joint School Board JACOB HENNIP, B. S. ; M. Ed. Supervising Principal Mansfield State College Pennsylvania State University Bucknell University TO THE CLASS OF 1962 In the foreword to the Rockefeller Committee ' s report entitled The Pursuit of Excellence; Education and the Future of America, there appears this state¬ ment: There is no more searching or difficult problem for a free people than to identify, nurture, and wisely use its own talents. Indeed on its ability to solve this problem rests, at least in part, its fate as a free people. For a free society cannot commandeer talent, it must be true to its own visions of indi¬ vidual liberty. By the same token each individual bears a moral responsibility to so develop his own talents, skills, and abilities that he may strengthen not only his own development but also the development of a free society. America has become the symbol for freedom-seeking people everywhere. It is only through the strength which you will add to her efforts that mankind will achieve lasting peace and happiness. May all of you achieve happiness and success through the years to come. MESSAGE TO GRADUATES You young people should feel fortunate and grateful because you grew up in a school district where the standards of your school set by the board of educa¬ tion, the administration, and the faculty have been of the quality and quantity that will enable you to compete successfully with the products of other secondary schools anywhere in the world. You have met those standards and, in many instances, surpassed them through your own efforts to learn more than the basic requirements. Probably at no time in the history of our nation has so much responsibility been left in the hands of our youth nor have so many things been expected of youth as right now. I feel confident that your experiences, socially and educa¬ tionally, while at Northeast have prepared you for entrance into your new status full of zeal and enthusiasm. I also feel confident thatyouwill meet the respon¬ sibilities and expectations of those older than you with the energy and force that only youth can provide. You have gone through the basic preparatory phase of your lives admirably. Both you and those who encouraged you or urged you on (parents and teachers) can be proud of your achievements. Congratulations and best wishes for a successful and happy future. GERALD A. BACON, B. S. in Bus. Ed. We also have pleasant memories of Junior English with Mrs. Carr. With Mr. Davis we have studied general science, biology, physics, and history. He has contributed greatly to the success of our class parties and to our unity as a class. INTRODUCTION TO HISTORY - CLASS OF ’62 Every class which has thus far graduated from Northeast has placed its mark upon our fine school. The class of 1962 hopes that we have done the same. Through the span of six years we have grown to value an education. Only as mem¬ bers of high school does youth realize the perspective of life and begin to adjust itself accordingly. An indelible mem¬ ory of personal feeling toward our school will forever exist. These high school days, and especially our wonderful sen¬ ior year, are a part of us. Perhaps the greatest happiness of all is to recognize the mental and physical development that years bring about. It is easy for every one of us to recollect our trials and tribulations as junior high students. Each grade completed made us feel as though we had passed a milestone never before reached. Each year our class came back only to find school ever more exciting and challenging. Swelled heads never resulted from teachers compliments. We benefited from them. It has been a joy to know that we were recognized and treated well. In return, the class of ' 62 sincerely hopes that our faculty has been given the feeling that its loyal efforts have produced what they would term a success. HISTORY - 1956- 57 - So innocent and so young, Our fears were many; There was so much to be done. Our class was divided; No togetherness existed. Seventh grade, in our minds, will never be misty. Mrs. Kennedy, Mrs. Coleman, Mr. Bacon, and Mr. Carrington were Our class sponsors four, A tip of the hat for their patience galore! 1957- 58 - One year gone by - We felt we were kings And looked upon seventh graders as if they were things. Upperclassmen were our idols; Being freshmen was our dream. Alas! We were still too young to hold club titles. How silly we were We don ' t care to infer. 1958- 59 - Freshmen at last, 66 strong, Co-operation and teamyork helped us along. Our first serious thoughts and words to the future Were directed with care, For we knew that our occupations were knock¬ ing there. Our year was brightened with our first class party. Ninth grade saw Mrs. Carr and Mr. Davis as permanent Class sponsors just starting. 1959- 60 - The distance between the Seniors and us was now only two years, About such things as Physics and Chemistry, we had our fears. The work was more difficult, but nothing could surpass How we toiled and sweated in Algebra II class! Through our able teachers we learned And were transformed from memorizers to thinkers with a yearn. CLASS OF 62 1960- 61 - How the summer did change us! It ' s hard to believe The kind and amount of respect we received. What exists today, existed then: The strong competition with Seniors again. Don ' t Take My Penny and buying class rings, Plus the King and Queen Ball gave this year a real zing! With social events and two class parties Soon as seniors we would be starting. 1961- 62 - As we look over the years past, We suddenly realize that this is our last. The accomplishment and satisfaction make us glad, But in a small, undefinable way, we ' re sad. The work, the glamour, the splendor, have come to an end; Now in life ' s work, time we will spend. Senior pictures, senior play, senior this and senior that, Money-making schemes made the treasury fat! Of all year one thought left its mark; That is, We can ' t wait for our Washington trip to start. Class day was a blast, to say the least, And the class party was sort of a feast. In unison we ' ll all agree That this year was the finest to go down in memory. Baccalaureate and Commencement, which mean so much. Offered the grand finale, the final touch. Dates: WASHINGTON TRIP - May 24, 25, 26, 27 CLASS DAY (NIGHT) - May 29 BACCALAUREATE - June 3 COMMENCEMENT - June 7 CLASS PROPHECY The year of the class reunion is 1982; The setting for the gala event is a really big - T.V. show. The name of this show is What ' s My Line With a handsome Master of Ceremonies; Why, it ' s the top literary man of our class, None other than VICTOR SORENY. PAT FIELD is on the panel, She was always especially neat, Now she is a dress designer; Field’s Frocks cannot be beat. MARLEAH UPHAM is also a panelist; Tonight, she is a special guest. She digs up dirt for the gossip c olumn; And they say it is the best. And also with us Is the man who predicts the potato yield; It ' s TOM SINK, Sect ' y of Agriculture; He ' s always outstanding in his field. GARY THOMPSON is on the panel, He ' s especially partial to blondes. You should see how trim he is; He operates Thompson ' s Reducing Salons. Signing in first is DEE ABELL; His occupation is hard to surpass He’s now an important instructor In a college cheerleading class. Here ' s ALAN GAMBLE with crash helmet, And just in case you wondered, He ' s finished first today At the Indianapolis 500. If you ' re feeling ill someday Or maybe your children or your spouse; GARY MOORE or PAUL SINK will respond to the call: Is there a male nurse in the house? RUTH DAUGHERTY has a winning smile And carries a long, long list. She helps the guests select their rooms; You see, she ' s a hotel receptionist. ALAN MCCARTHY signs in now, And he ' s a business success, we find. But just what business is he in? Your guess is as good as mine! CAROL JOHNSON comes in now; She ' s a secretary - we can see. We wonder if she takes notes best On her boss’s knee! Our next guest is GARY BATES; His experiences are rare. You see he is a forest ranger And a friend of Smokey the Bear. EDITH GAMBLE took to the skies To realize her ambition; They say she is an airline stewardess. My! What a high position. DEAN FIELDS has come a long, long way; That ' s because his course is set. He joined the Air Force years ago; Now, he flies a sabre jet. A slim trim model enters now - My! But she looks smart. Oh, we see it ' s JUDY BELCHER; She always could play the part. Our next guest you’re sure to remember; Of much he has to boast. You know him as PRESTON EDSELL, The Boston Celtics Basketball coach. But now she’s doing the darndest thing; Living the life of a big, big Texas farmer. Signing in now is Mr. JAMES REMICH; We ' re glad he did arrive. We ' ve just learned that he ' s been awarded The Scientific Nobel Prize. It must be time for the commercial And this one is a treat. JUDY ANTISDEL brings the word To make our program complete. She tells of a cosmetic company It is the finest, she deems. Why, all you ladies surely use BEVERLY BRINK ' S Razzle Dazzle creams. With utmost pleasure we now present Our most distinguished guest - by fate It ' s GARY GREEN, rather portly now. The governor of our state. A lovely lady here appears; Why, it ' s DEBBIE HALE we find. She is teaching in a little school. Can she make the students mind? Big and brawny RONNIE HEBBARD Is doing rather well. He joined the Barnum Bailey Circus; His job is lifting dumb bells. LINDA PARKS - the home economist, Always did sew a fancy stitch. LLOYD FOX, a very shrewd hunter Killed a bear, they say with a dart. Today he’s as famous as Davy Crockett Remember how he got his start. JANICE MORGAN is one who ' s changed; She was quiet as a mouse. But now she’s entered politics: She’s the first lady Speaker of the House. ROBERT WILMOT is still squeezing apples; Guess he ' ll always be the same. We heard he destroyed all the evidence Before the Revenuers came. An interior decorator is signing in now, It’s SUE VANDERVORT so we see Her fine work is widely known, Even by Jacqueline Kennedy. CARL SMITH is entering now; He’s really in the dough. We’ve been told that he’s a writer For the new Red Skelton show. Of Lady Basketball players There’s a lot that can be said, But JANE ROBINSON is heading our list; She ' s a California Red Head. Next to come is DICK TAYLOR Complete with geetar and toupee. My, how the girls did faint and swoon; He was the Presley of his day. RUTH SAMPSON is such a happy gal, She chuckles more than most of us. But just in case you laugh too much She operates Laugh Anonymous. ” A well-known writer now appears, Oh, it’s RICHARD WHITE I see. For he ' s the author of the book, Success in Life as a Bookie. DONNA KIPP has a worthy job; She is an X-ray technician. She ' ll take your picture any day, If you get in the correct position. A lady truant officer now appears, Yes, it’s SHIRLEY POOLER - She surely keeps those kids in school, They just can ' t seem to fool her! Now that we’ve come to the end of our show, There are others who helped in the production. There ' s LUCILLE ROCKWELL who works backstage Preparing the guest for their introduction. Another important man we find Is working in the control room. As you might guess, it’s DAVE LaBARRE; Does he tell them to lower the boom! LUCILLE WELCH and MARGARET SMITH Are writers for our show. Without their thoughtful help Our program wouldn ' t go. Now we ' re all invited to a party Immediately following the show, Where we can chat with one another And tell our tales of woe. We ' ll renew some old acquaintances And may shed a tear or two; But we never shall forget the days, Of our Senior Class of ' 62. t THE PERFECT IDIOT - - - - DEE ABELL ■ - EDITH GAMBLE -DEAN FIELDS MARLEAH UPHAM - - ALAN GAMBLE -GARY GREEN - VICTOR SORENY - JUDY ANTISDEL -LINDA PARKS - - JUDY BELCHER ■ - CARL EASTMAN RUTH DAUGHERTY - - DICK TAYLOR - - - - JIM REMICH -JUNE BROWN MRS. Our organization is seven years old and is open to any girl, in grades 9 through 12, who is interested in and takes part in athletics. Our purposes are; to support and maintain school spirit; to develop and display good sportsmanship; to cultivate and encourage girls’ athletics; and to establish regulations for cheerleaders. Our projects for this year include making letters to welcome the visiting teams, sel¬ ling refreshments at games, sponsoring a record hop, and participating in the gym ex¬ hibition as well as in play days with other schools. Our goal is to give the girls participating in sports the recognition they so rightfully deserve, and to cultivate friendly relationships with girls of other schools.
