A JL Gxglcllg 5-it 0 Q 1 's In a season that was supposed to be a rebuilding year, the Northeast State Junior College basketball team concluded their campaign as the Alabama Junior College State Runner-ups while compiling a 19- IO record, The Mustangs had lost the services of four two year starters and had only two experienced letterman returning, Northeast State was the last team to qualify for a position in the State Tournament and went to Montgomery as the last seeded team. The first game for the Rainsville quintet was with Yancey State Junior College who finished the season as the Number One team in the Southern Division of the Alabama Junior College Conference. The Mustangs beat Yancey State 82-62 in a shocking upset. In the semi final game, Northeast State met Marion Institute and upset the Cadets 83-78. In the State finals the Mustangs met the Walker Junior College Rebels. In a tight game, the Rebels edged the Mustangs 64- 63. . For their outstanding play, Steve Elsner and Jimmy Keller were named to the All-State Tourna- ment Team. Elsner was also voted the Most Valuable Player in the State Tournament. Elsner and Kel- ler were also named to the All Alabama Junior College Team for their outstanding play during the season. This season the Mustangs again displayed a tight defense which has become their trademark. They were the Number' Nine Defensive Team in the Nation giving up only 64 points a game.
