Although the 1 wm - 6 loss record may look umm- DTBSSIVB, the Vikings were decislvely defeated only once., Northbrook placed three men on the All-Conference teams.. Don Koelper, rugged tackle, made first string, while Tom Bandow, hard-chargmg, fleet-footed fullback, and Melvyn Kronn, one of the best defensive centers 111 the business made the second string. The season opened September 10, when the Crimson and Gold traveled to Batavia. Northbrook pushed across its lone touchdoum 111 the fourth quarter. The fmal score was Batavla 12, Northbrook 6. The following week the Vrkmgs played host to Lake Forest and received a heart- breaking defeat, 6-0. The Viklngs threatened many times, but were unable to push the ball over. Northbrook's fxrst conference game came on the mght of September 24 when they went to Arlxngton Heights to take on Palatine. The Vlkmgs were the favorxtes, but were upset by Palatine, 6-0, U1 a rather slow game that saw Northbrook lose the ball on fumbles a number of times. After a two week rest, the V11-:mgs traveled to Fox Lake to play Grant. Grant had an idea that Northbrook was golng to be an easy mark, but the Vlkl.IlgS had other ideas.. They held their own against powerful Grant untxl the last quarter when they weakened and Grant pushed over two more touchdowns to wm 25-14. The only vlctory of the season came the following week when the Vxkmgs played host to Antxoch. The ,ff Viklngs gamed a smashmg 13-7 victory over thelr ,' T dxstant rxvals, and completely outrushed and outpassed the Indlans all night.. A On the fateful day of October 22 the Vlkmgs , , recexved the worst defeat m the hxstory of the school, a 38-O defeat at the ha.nds of Barrington, who was on lts way to the nce tltle., The Vlkmgs ended the season on October 29 U1 their annual homecormng game. The Vxkmgs put up a good fxght agamst Bensenvllle, but ended up on the end of a 13-0 score. So ends the saga of the '48 grid Vlklngs. Although cornparatlvely light, they played hard and ave up.
