Erleen McCann one of our very promxslng crew who wrote about Ben Jamm Franklln Icmucxry Iune 1944 Slow progress made over the Sea of Knowledge Our advance delayed by storms and rarn saualls 1n the torm of exarnlnatrons and darly qurzzes Iune 1944 Once more we put 1nto port tor an overhaullng of our shtp and to garn some much needed rest for the crew September October 1944 Our captarn for thrs voyage IS Mrss Connors Our trrst socral event of the year was a Harvest Dance held rn our muslc room wh1ch was decorated rn an autumn and harvest motlt November 1944 Made a small amount ot money tor the shrp s treasury from a toad sale sponsored by the crew We publrshed a shrp newspaper The Spyglass w1th Mary Mullrgan as edltor rn chref Posrtlons on the start were grven to crew members December 1944 We held our course stra1ght and made good October 2 3 4 1945 When we crossed the halfway lme ot our voyage SSDIOI ortlcers deemed rt necessary that we be 1n1t1ated 1nto the hrgh posrtlon decks and went seltconscrously about our dutres 1n queer and dectd edly unbecomlng regalra As a reward tor takrng everythlng so good naturedly we were grven a party by the sen1or O1'11C9TS November Icnuary 1945 Tlme out tor Thanksg1v1ng and Chrrstmas leaves and then back to duty February May 1946 Progress very slow Tlme drags and we seem to make no headway No relref ln slght Iune 1946 Unexpected relret arrrvesl Then come two months for rest and over haullng September 1946 Wrth Mr Buker at the helm and only one more port ahead ot our trnal dockmg we decrded to make the tr1p as pleasant as pos srble We elected Vernon Ahmadnan as Navrgator Madeletne Belval as Ftrst Mate Robert Baker as Second Mate and Elleen McCann as Steward To start our crurse oft at the rrght speed we part1c1pated wrth the rest ot the hrgh school rn the events of Fleld Day sponsored by the Student Councrl lt was a momentous occasron w1th many pnzes be mg awarded to many of the talented satlors of the crew Through much eftort on the part of some members the crew con ducted the sale ot mechanxcal pencrls Thts helped to hll our spare trme as well as our treasury 46 we had so recently attained. Therefore, for three days we paraded the

A I 11119 Th1s also was held on the Wh1t1n luxury hner The mam deck was beautlfully decorated the orchestra was very melodlous and the crowd was wonderful The result was a Senror Ball surpassrng all other events 1948 Durmg the frnal weeks the crew drd double duty In our honor the new recrurts gave a delrghtful prom and we held our last functron whlch the was Senror Banquet Held rn the large mess hall rt was a huge success wrth plenty to eat of course As we raprdly neared the Port of Graduatron the thr1ll of each 1nd1v1dual begrnnrng hrs own separate voyage rn the near future surged w1th1n us Some of the past voyages had been tlnged wrth hrgh wmds and rough seas but rn every heart was the satrsfactron that he had ac compllshed somethlng The lrnks were slowly formrng rn our chcun of lrfe and the cooperatlon of fellow sarlors and offrcers made them pleas ant ones Now as full fledged sallors we have the responsrbrlrty of steer1ng our separate courses toward the Harbor of Success Wrth only part of our cham forged and the la gest part strll to be forged we have a great task before us but through coordrnatron between sarlors and offrcers these l1nks are sure to make our charn of lrfe happy and suc cessful Florence Cook Vtrgrnla Deome 47
