School Life As do most things, footprints change shape and image as our view of them changes. When we feel on top of the world, footprints are those impressions made by the steps that took us there. Trac¬ ing them reminds us that we made the right moves at the necessary times. When we have been less successful, footprints are discouraging depressions— vivid reminders of our failures. If we wander aimlessly, our footprints are neither impressive nor depressive. They mark no achievements and record no losses. Of course, if we stand still, we make no footprints. But we are not standing still—we are steadily moving; and our footprints are recording the paths we choose. Some may be deep; others, less noticeable. But we are doubtlessly leaving impressions of some kind. Their role in shaping the future will depend on how carefully we are mak¬ ing them in the present. 3 School Life Makes Deep Impressions On Students 5 6 XKE, THIS EftR HF)S (ZEBAJ frLRTCiU T aua 55 A JFX T VetR R -- I OCArt KAJO M) ' (TF) jS SEA lMtR. — I 1 se€ Y =? rf (3 ft ' cFORP Liycro. p{JA j ' x foRcev air. voucuty ' s CLRSb -—- j RCK 7 8 Yellow Jackets Buzz Through Student Life 9 Contrast Is 10 The Key From Frenzy To Serenity, Emotions Abound 12 13 14 Underclassmen Follow In Footsteps Of Seniors 15 Elizabeth S. This was the best percentage of wins achieved by any Jacket varsity team in five years. The squad boasted several offensive stand-outs —Kenny Collins, David Partin, Steve Lewis, and Lew Willis—who each hit better than .240. Three of these lettermen will be returning to the 1970 team. Tony Partin headed the pitching staff, and back¬ up pitcher Norman Gladden recorded a 6-1 score. An infield comprised of nearly all underclassmen supported the pitchers by holding the opponents to a relatively small number of runs. The softball team charted a 3-3 season record in its second year under Coach Mary Walker. The captain, Cynthia Mapp, led her teammates in hitting and did an outstanding job of fielding from her third base position. Catcher George Colonna takes his turn at warming-up the pitchers before the game begins. With Honors Cross country and varsity track, under the direction of Coach Phil Newton, provided additional athletic events for students not already involved in football or baseball. Despite a rather poor record in district competition, the teams did do well locally and several boys established records in individual events. Larry Morris beats Atlantic opponent to the tape in 880- yard run. Earl Boney and Darrell Beech make a hand-off in the mile relay. 53 VARSITY CHEERLEADERS—Left to right: Lynne Rogers, Martha Kellam, Jenny Floyd, Ruthellen Weeks, Anne Nottingham, Jane Curie Turner, Debbie Dennis, Scottie Acworth, Jody Warren. Under the guidance of Mrs. Mary Walker and Mrs. Sharon Bull, the girls made signs for athletic events, led spectators in cheers, and carried out the annual Homecoming program and bonfire. The girls also assisted Pep Club members by teaching them school cheers and supervising their sign-making. Jody Warren and Scottie Acworth have fun while decorating the Homecoming float. J.V. The team boasted only one win in the conference against seven losses. Despite the poor record, four Seniors averaged double-figure totals for the season. Darrell Beech made 202 points for a 12.6 point-per-game average, the highest of the squad. Charles Ames led his teammates in field goal shooting with a 47% average. Under the boards, Kenny Cgllins set a new school record by grabbing 164 rebounds in 17 games. Collins and Beech also led in assists with 18 each. M. James, recorded a winning season with a 6-4 won loss tally overall. The team ' s district record was 3-4, with no losses among local schools. Ronald Powell and Jack Womble called signals for Northampton. Powell rushed 555 yards for 7 touchdowns and threw 15 passes for 194 yards. Womble averaged 4.1 yards per carry rushing and threw 23 passes for 350 yards and 3 TDs. Although the line had few boys of great height or weight, it held the opponents to little more than a 10-point per game average. For the first time in many years, two linemen, Alfred Nottingham and Tommy Palmer, were selected by the Exmore Rotary Club to dually receive the Most Valuable Player award. Jackets On Top Again The J.V. Basketball tea m tallied its best district record in better than four years with a 5-3 chart of conference games, 12-4 overall. The height of Steve Nottingham, combined with the experience of Hank Badger and J. C. Trower, was a major factor in the success of the team. This was the second consecutive winning season for Coach E. M. James. Through the assistance of Coach James and Coach Joe Burnham, a Golf team was organized and several matches were played. The team made a number of trips to golf courses across the bay, and it also hosted matches at the Northampton Country Club in Cape Charles. Track team sponsored an Eastern Shore J.V. Meet this year, in addition to participating in a number of other local meets up and down the Shore. Although the squad did not win many first- place awards, the competition did provide good experience in learning the fundamentals of track events. The J.V. Football squad participated in only four games this season, but the team was victorious in each contest. For the first time, two home games were played under the lights, giving the boys ad¬ ditional experience in preparing for the Varsity squad. Boasting one of last year ' s District Championship teams, the eyes of the club look to State this year. The club is sponsored by Mr. E. M. James, III and Mr. Randy Parks. The joke’s on Tommy Palmer, president, when he tells Pat Lusk, vice-president, Hubbard Mayhew, treasurer and Denise Waters, secretary, that debating is easy. Band president and drum major Garry Drummond, leads the band procession down the field. Other officers are Vice president Frank Dunton, Secretary Iris Arnold, Treasurer Mike Wood and Reporter Anne Wood. 70 In Step With The Times The Northampton High School marching band made its first appearance at the Thanksgiving Day game. Many hours of instruction and drill preceded the exhibition. With the end of football season, the band turned to its normal concert practice. The Choral Club had many enjoyable times listening to records and singing. Both activities are sponsored by Mr. Jay Meek. Choral Club members Geneva Bailey, Patricia Ames, Sandra Bones, Valerie Dillaman, Faye Barrett, Betty Jean Milbourne, Diane Birch, Marilyn Scott and Thomas Widgeon listen to Mr. Meek ' s instructions.
