PHYSICAL EDUCATION HEALTH Cynthia Mapp, Susan Gardner, Anna Nye, and Becky Col- onna participate in a volleyball game as one of their group sports in physical education. Physical Education and Health classes offer opportunity for physical development through calisthenics and sports as well as for learning good health habits and first aid. Three years of physical education are required for gradua¬ tion. Ninth grade students are required to take driver education as part of their physical education program. In health programs conducted during their physical edu¬ cation classes, students learn basic first aid. As an extension of this program Mrs. Fluvanna Ferebee, our school nurse, visits once a month to confer with students who have special health problems. FOREIGN LANGUAGE UNDERSTANDING The Foreign Language Department offers students two years of Latin and three years of French. Through their study of a foreign language, stu¬ dents acquire a better understanding of the people, their language, and their customs. Dick Shannonhouse, Janey Nottingham, Laura Watson, Brigitte Hurtt, Jeff Davis, and Pat Tankard use tape recorder under Miss Jacob’s direction. Brigitte placed eighth out of one thousand two hundred and eighty contestants in the National French I Contest. Jane Kellam, Betty Rogers, Janey Nottingham, Brigitte Hurtt, Pat Lusk, Henry Floyd, Dale Goffigan, Mario Cole, Shirley Hannah Henderson, and Phyllis Bradshaw sing French songs Stine, Ann Spady, Mickey Outten, and Cathe Blais study as a part of their French course. DRIVER EDUCATION CHALLENGE During their first year of physical education, eighth grade boys participate in tumbling and gymnastics. B squad, under the direction of Danny White, engage in formal calisthenics as a part of daily routine. As part of Driver Education, which is taught in ninth and tenth grades, students may take instruction in behind-the-wheel” driving. Debbie Arnold and Beth Wise take advantage of this in the new driver education car. 19
