The main purposes of the club are to promote the ideals of honesty, ser- vice, and leadership, and to reward students who have achieved the 91 average in their work. The club also urges high education for its members. The Beta Club in Northampton High was organized in May of 1952 and is under regulation and supervision by the local school administration. Senior, Francis Nottingham, junior, Mary Lucie Mapp, and tenth graders Reed Ennis and Donald Stine represented Northampton High School at the State Debate in Charlottesville. The members did an outstanding job for such a young team, commented Mr. Kenneth Webb, Debate sponsor. With three returning state debaters and other qualified members, the outlook for this year is very promising. The George B. Wynne Debating Society, named in honor of its founder and long-time spon- sor, is a forensic club interested in national and international issues of current interest. Its purpose is to improve public speaking ability and to teach the techniques of effective debating. Under the direction of their sponsor, Mr. Webb, and Mr. James, the members prepare for the state debate held annually in Charlottesville. Each member is encouraged to try out for the debatingteam, which will represent our school in state-wide competition.
