Lawson, Jr. Yearbook. As you enter upon your work when you leave school, enjoy your privileges, but, also, accept your responsibilities. You are privileged to live in a free country. Do your job well so that we can remain free. You are responsible for good government. Exercise this responsibility. Be not afraid to say NO if NO is the proper answer. Try to live by reason in life’s endeavors, realizing unashamedly, however, that exalted emotions stem from reasoning beings. Mr. William F. Lawson, Jr. Superintendent of Northampton County Schools Mrs. Caroline Walker General Supervisor Miss Helen Lowe Clerk of School Board Mrs. Gertrude B. Meek Secretary Mr. Charles Jones Testing Coordinator 4 Mr. Philip B. Tankard Principal Mr. George W. Young Assistant Principal Miss Phoebe E. Windecker Clerk It is my pleasure to congratulate the TORCH staff and their sponsor, Mrs. Smalley, on their fine yearbook pro¬ duction. I will always cherish your yearbook as a reminder of the many pleasant experiences that we have shared. May you continue to grow in the academic skills and attitudes so essential to your future success. • : ■ Mr. Philip B. Tankard 5 Philip B. Tankard Principal Randolph Macon College - B.S. CLA SSES Distributive Education classes operate the school book¬ store as part of the Distributive Education program. For the first time this year a course in Basic Electricity is being offered to 11th and 12th grade boys at Northampton High School. Under the direction of Mr. Newton, these boys have a fine opportunity to learn more about electricity and its uses. IN ACTION 11th grade students have typing as an optional course. Commercial students learn to type as a part of their voca¬ tional education; other students learn this skill for personal use. 8th Grade General Science students have laboratory ex¬ periences, such as work with microscopes. As an integral part of the Health and Physical Education program, the Virginia Physical Fitness Tests are administered to each student enrolled in Physical Education. These serve as an incentive for students to improve their physical status and at the same time to enable the instructor to evaluate the results in terms of strengths and weaknesses and to strive to meet these weaknesses in the overall program. The group of boys pictured are among some 50 who qual¬ ified for Blue shoe strings by scoring in the 50th percentile or higher on all of the tests. A favorite activity of the foreign language courses is singing in the language being studied. A tape recording made by a person fluent in the language aids students in learning to speak the language. Scott One of the highlights of our club ' s activities each year is planning for and attending Model General Assembly in Richmond. By participating in its activities, delegates gain a better under¬ standing of our State Government. Our dele¬ gates: Susan Dix, Reporter; Martha Heath, Dele¬ gate; Faye Collins, Bill Coordinator of the House; and Mary Deem Turner, Senator; are preparing a bill to be presented at the 1964 M. G. A. The Mother-Daughter Banquet is an annual affair of the Tri-Hi-Y, usually held the Friday night before Mothers’ Day. During the banquet program, the officers for the following year are installed. Here the committee is planning the menu and the food each girl will bring. The Tri-Hi-Y was quite proud of the club ' s float which was a product of all the girls ' ef¬ forts. The group worked under the designs and leadership of Laura James and Linda Abbott. 55 M ' DRAMATIC CLUB OFFICERS Mac Henderson.President Jane Engle.Vice President Helen Terry.Secretary Barbara Duer.Treasurer Mrs. Margaret Holland.Sponsor MEMBERS Charlotte Lee Adkins Barbara Bradford Maggie Badger Betsy Dunton Betty Fleetwood Faye Hamblin Gloria Jones Sonny Kellam Kitty Leatherbury Mary D. Although this year the Dramatic Club lost all of last year ' s seniors, the loss was not as bad as it might have been because this year ' s sophomores have been gaining valuable experience in the less spectacular roles. Also, several juniors, as well as others, joined, forming a valuable addition. As usual the club presented two one-act plays on March 20 and contributed a float to the Homecoming game, but some exciting new projects were add¬ ed to the club ' s activities. This year, for the first time, the club presented an assembly program which it feels to be one of the most interesting the school has seen. Also, a group of members attended the district contest of one-act plays on March 14 at Kellam High School, preparatory to entering the contest next year. In addition to giving the store a closer control of financial results, this system enabled the store to have and to sell those items most in demand by the students. The D. E. The club meets once a month during winter and more frequently during the spring months. Besides individual projects, the club built a float for the Homecoming Parade. The club is planning to send up two rockets; one carrying a camera that will take a picture of the Eastern Shore from 500 to 700 feet up, and the second carrying mice that are being trained for such an expedition. The Jackets suffered from graduation in 1962 and were set back even more when it was learned that Jimmy Partin and Jimmy West, both starters in ' 62, would be unable to play this year. Led by Keith Colonna and Frank Hill, the Jackets achieved a 10-6 won-lost record, which was slightly better than that of the previous season. The Jackets won the Eastern Shore Championship for the 7th time in ten years and also topped their arch-rivals, Virginia Beach, on two occasions. The 1964 baseball season should be a great one because only one member of the ' 63 team, Eddie Sayers, will be missing. The Jackets of ' 64 should be quite hard for opponents to handle.
