Graduation from high school marks only a beginning in the training so essential for satis¬ fied living and working toward loftier plateaus of excellence. If we want to live a life full of satisfactions for ourselves and for our loved ones, friends, and neighbors, we shall strive for excellence in all our work. Our dreams will be inspirations, our goals will be majestic ideals, and our day-to-day deeds will be havens of contentment. T o travel upward to such plateaus has ever been the longing of great souls. Their feats have given us the refining fires out of which have grown human skills, understandings, and compassions. May I humbly suggest that we strive to become worthy members of such honored bands. W. F. Lawson, Jr. Superintendent 4 ticff r ' The class of 1961 is proud to dedicate this edition of the Torch to Mr. George Baker Wynne. Through thirty-three years of teaching and sponsorship of the Debate Club, Mr. Wynne has presented high ideals of citizenship to the students of Northampton County. 5 tu Miss Helen Lowe Clerk of School Board Mrs. Gertrude Meek Clerk Typist Mr. W. The part you play will fill your life with memories of experiences which will be as fleeting as your school days have been. As you play your part, you develop a rep¬ utation for yourself, which is not fleeting. Instead your reputation reflects your ideals and your interests in your fellow man throughout all the years of your life. It is my sincere hope that each of you will have a bright and shiny reputation reflecting a true devotion for all that is good, clean, and pure. A CLASS OFFICERS 12th GRADE President - J. T. We were outclassed by fifty-seven ' s crew, Though when we roamed the halls the Seniors flew. Pity to the youngest class we spare, For we recall the signs we had to wear. Five years our class has played its many parts, Sharing the burdens within the teachers’ hearts. We ' ve stuck together like oysters on a rock; If N. H. S. forgets us -- what a shock! As now we say farewell with hidden tears, We step into the world with hopes and fears. M.M. and P.P. THE SENIOR CLASS OF 1961 PAGE BRYAN ASHBY SUZANNE BALLARD E. They’ve worked on through the past three years of school And set a good example as a rule. But Juniors will be Juniors, it is true; Who crams for French exams, ah, parlez-vous? In sports they’re making records every day; These boys are big, know how to run and play. As nearing graduation, they can see Just one more year, and then they will be free! With this and other thoughts in mind, they dream Sometimes of jobs and often next year ' s team! But wake up, kids, and blink those stars away; Mr. Kane can wait another day! C. Today we like to dance and talk of dates. As teens, we’re joined by having the same traits. While at Northampton High we spend our youth; We’ll try to hold to honesty and truth. Through hours, and tests, exams, we sit and think. Sometimes at sight of grades our hearts will sink. But never are our efforts all in vain. Our minds and bodies we must try to train To fit ourselves for jobs in future life, To overcome the troubles and the strife. At N. H. S. this year there is a group One of the best, they make a lively troop. They have survived one year and now they think; We ' re sitting up on top; we’re in the pink! Although they have three more long years to go, They set to work, and spirits are not low. They look back on the day when they were kids , When they could make the teachers flip their lids Because a year has given them some growth, They have improved in grades and conduct both. But still they find the time to make the noise; It’s bare in ' tention hall without these boys! To keep their future looking ever bright, We’re sure this class will try with all its might. H. S. there is a class Who marched into the rooms in huddled mass. They ran; they jumped; they skipped in through the doors; They yelled; they scuffed their feet upon the floors. It seemed the end of them would never be; Their faces were a never-ending sea! They missed the bells, got lost, and stepped on toes; The clock and locks became their greatest foes. They tried and did their best to learn it all, But running was so tempting in the hall! New teachers were to them some good, some bad. The prices of new books made Daddies mad. They were in algebra and science green; For goodness sake, what does that old ' x ' mean? To listen in assemblies was a bore; From gym they learn how muscles can be sore! But now the start is made, the hard part gone; They walk upon walks, not on the lawn! We wonder why they aren’t so very wild; Their behavior now is really rather mild. It could be that they ' re blooming out like flowers, But more than likely it’s because of hours ! 39 y Linda Abbot Richard Ashby Barbara Babnew Betty Badger Catherine Bell David Bell Ellen Bell Connie Belote Joan Bennett John Birch John Bowen Judy Bowen Barbara Bradford Burleigh Brady Donald Brown Patricia Brown Margaret Bull Linda Burleson Ronald Burton Lynwood Butler James Cambell Robert Carpenter Fletcher Chalmers Lillian Chalmers Catherine Charnock Marsha Chesser Lynn Clarke John Colonna Lewis Delano Guy Dorey Barry Downing Otho Downing Ray Doughty Andy Duer Margaret Edwards Rebecca Elliott Joan Evans Mark Evans James Farlow Phillip Fitchett Larry Fluhart Bill Fray Darlene Gershowitz Ann Gladden Donna Greenwall Michael Grover Jerry Guy Charles Hall 40 Faye Hamblin Merilyn Hargis Betty Henches Edmund Henderson Kitty Hickman Frankie Hill G. These were missing from the ’59 team because of graduation or ineligibility. The Jackets were blessed with a one-two punch on the mound, as right-hander Billy Hill and left-hander David Doughty led the team to another winning season. The Yellow Jackets walked off with the Eastern Shore Championship with an im¬ pressive 7 and 1 record. Overall, the Jackets won 9 while losing 4; two games ended with a tie; and another was called in the 4th because of rain, the Jackets leading 4 to 0. The best game of the season probably was the scoreless tie game with Crisfield, Maryland, called at the end of 10th inning because of darkness. Both teams played terrific defensive ball and the winning run was called out at the plate on three different occasions. Co-captain junior Page Ashby, led the team in hitting with a sizzling .395, although one sophomore and two freshmen were close behind. The most encouraging note this year is the fact that there were no seniors on the starting team at the conclusion of the season, so 1961 should bring another championship contender to NHS. 64 Batting Practice Donnie Ashby Bobby Dunton Sliding Practice Page Ashby 1960 Scores Northampton 8 Northampton 5 Northampton 5 Northampton 3 Northampton 7 Northampton 9 Northampton 1 Northampton 8 Northampton 5 Northampton 5 Northampton 0 Northampton 7 Northampton 5 Northampton 9 Northampton 4 Northampton 3 Central 4 Va.
