They soon were in the swing of things, And leaders were chosen, too; Lit Johnson was the president They followed all year through. The class play was The Minstrel, Starring Gloria, Mickey, and Bo. But soon the year's end was in sight-- And still so much to know! AG bh iy Uh Uh, i, The next September found a change. As Sophs they sauntered in; They made new greenies realize That learning's hard to win. Nothing special marks this year Except unbounded hopes. Things happened, and the time flew by For they had learned the ropes, p 8 ta Hooray! The Junior year had come-- Great times and much hard work} Chemistry formulas and physical ed -- All fun, and who wanted to shirk? Last came the Junior-Senior prom With songs and thrills galore. And then vacation. Now to learn What Seniors have in store. IV They're Dignified Seniors--yes, at last! But preparation! Whew} Debates, term papers, English, French-- And who'll pass Latin II? The rings should come this week or next. All to soon comes Commencement night. The time has flown; we're sorry, too! We'll miss our school with all our might} --Betty L. I lived in Norfolk until the tender age of three when my parents moved to the country. There were all kinds of mischief for a small girl to get into. One of my favorite pastimes was to get hung on the barb wire fence by the seat of my blue jeans and yell for help. Another time I almost scared my mother to death by calmly walking into the house with a snake in my ote hand, ae I started elementary school at Capeville and finished in Cheriton. Then came high school at Northampton. Now, I really felt grown up. I man- aged to pull through the first three years with fair grades. Like all girls I have had my share of crushes, but at the present time I am concentrating on the one and only, who likes movies, dancing, and almost all the things I do. My senior year has had an added attraction. I have been secretary to le Mr. Jiggs Dunton. when my high school education is over and I enter the 2 business world, I hope I will find a person as nice as Mr. Dunton for a ay} boss. Ph ee p7s C Ll. 77 GROWING PAINS It all began when I was born six weeks too late, and it looks as if I've been a little late in every- thing ever since--even to catching the school bus morn- ings. I grew up on a farm a long way from civilization. Because of this, my sister and I had to find our own entertainment without other associates. One day, be- fore I started to school, my sister, Jean, and I went to Gull Island. wWe brought home collections of gull eggs and sand dollars. The next morning the back porch was full of baby gulls. They did not live long, but while they were alive we really had a4 time. It re- minds me of a proverb: Never count your gulls before ae ;s they hatch. while I was in grammar school I had 4 number of animal pets. Mom and Dad bought a Chesapeake retriever the year I was born; he lived to be seven years old. How he managed to live that long is a mystery to me. I was al- ways poking my fingers into his beautiful, pleading, yellow eyes, and pulling his long silky ears. My pony was the most beloved pet on my list. I have him now and we are still great pals. My love for animals was even extended to toys. My favorites were little teddy bears. Santa brought me a teddy bear at Christmas for four years in succession. Since I°have been in high school things have been very hard for me. Having grown up a tomboy, longing for the out-of-doors, I have really neg- lected my school work. Because of this same thing, I am always getting into mischief, mischief that I will always remember. fany things have happened during my high school days that I will carry among my sweetest memories all through life. However, I'm quite sure this, my senior year, has been the most eventful, exciting, and glorious year of high school for me. When I am old I am sure I will sigh for the glorious days at Northampton High School. The first years of my life were spent on a farm located near a creek, and under such conditions, I be- came fascinated by the ways of nature. I still enjoy spending as much time as possible in the out-of-doors. At six I entered school at Eastville, and then at Cheriton, after the consolidation of the schools. I spent two years at Cheriton, and then received the thrill of entering high school. mack ies I have been quite fortunate during my high school life and have enjoyed the privileges of holding offices in school work. My junior year I served on the newspaper staff, the Annual staff, and as class treasurer. This, my last year in high school, I was chosen president of the Good Citizens' Club and class president. JI am again on the staff of The Torch.” As my high school days draw to a close, I do hope that in my small way I have given some service to the school and some happiness to those with whom I have worked. THE FIRST HUNDRED YEARS ARE THE HaRDEST On a bleak February day in 1950, something hap- pened to my mother and father that changed the entire course of their lives--mef I came along hand in hand with the Depression (I hope that doesn’t prove any thing). When I was five years old, I was operated on for appendicitis. (Speaking of operations!!) TI had the most wonderful time then that I have ever had in my life. The nurses used to congregate in my room. I was such a dear little thing. (My, how I have changed!) When I started to school, I made quite an enviable record. JI was late almost every day. I will admit it was hard--but I man- aged. Since I've been going to Northampton, I've only. missed the bus about fifty per cent of the time, which is really an accomplishment for me. Thinking back over my life to date, I can't help wondering if the next seventeen years will be as much fun as the last seventeen. Immediately after commencement--wonderful word--I expect to be moving away from the Shore, but the Eastern Shore, particularly Northampton High School, will always have a special place in my heart. This was a mistake, because whenever I would go down to the Wharf I would absolutely have to go swimming. nis made me late delivering papers, but it never seemed to make me late for supper. I can't imagine why! After I fired myself from the paper job, I started staying down at the beach. I practically lived down there for three or four summers, Soe aS be Ph its 5 i i ALT — A few boys and I built ourselves a cabin at the beach and named it the Ditney Inn. The only trouble with this was that we had mice and rats. We have wonderful parties and terrific times at the beach. i have had much fun this last year playing football, even though I did not play too much. I hope to graduate this year if my teachers are kind and stay in the right mood, especially Mr. Wynne and Miss Palmer. Mas ODE TC 4 MOVING VAN ; On a cold thirty-first day of January in 1929, I ‘| wag born in Nassawadox. I grew a beard at the ripe old ; age of three days. I looked like an ape--or so I've been told. My early childhood was spent moving from the Shore to Fort Point, Massachusetts, a beach on Boston Bay, to Wellsville, New York, and back again to the Shore. I have enjoyed moving; although it has meant leaving some of my best. friends, there has always been the joy of making new ones. My hobbies are building model airplanes and pho- ee eye tography. I have just built a plane with a small gaso- line engine, but I have not flown it yet. I became interested in photography as a result of my membership in the Chemology Science Club. I was elected president of the club for this year. A few of my pictures were used in the Chemology Club exhibit at a recent Science Club Fair in Williamsburg, Virginia. When I get my college degree at William and Mary, I would like to be a naturalist. I have always enjoyed studying plants and animals. Biology is one of my favorite subjects. I am looking forward to Commencement, but I cannot help wishing that I did not have to say “good-by to the friends I have made since I came to Northampton in my Sophomore year. vat a EZEZEZEZEZEZE Es s ‘ og N Th , , ore, . S. 0. THE WORK OF THE YOUTH ORGANIZATION Four years ago the Youth Service Organization was organized at Northamp- ton High School for the sole purpose of providing entertainment for the stu- dents of this school, as well as for others. In the past four years the club has made great progress. eR re ar eo I I IER During the school term of 1946-47 we have had dances as often es possible, which have been well attended by the students from this school, and by those from other schools. One day of each month, usually on Thursday, there has been an assembly. These assemblies have not always been religious. At two: of the assemblies we have invited professional speakers to talk to us. Another important function of this organization is to sponsor the March of Dimes Drive each year. We are proud to say that this year a total of : $104.51 was collected, which is the highest total amount that has been con- a tributed since 1944-45 when there was a total of $176.45. oo + ‘ ; ru We hope that the students of Northampton. High School have enjoyed both the night entertainments and the assemblies that have been put on by this club. The officers of the Y. In the past year ; a league has been organized to govern all pupils for qualification in any inter-school athletic activities. Fortunately, the school board has begun to take an active part in supporting all athletics in general. This interest has been gratefully received by all concerned. Organization, which has been lacking, is now evident in all of our sports. Through the above media and other inspirations, the students of our school have shown much more enthusi- asm in school support than heretofore. Ss a area Northampton High School is now off to a good start in football. Much valuable experience has been: gained from the seven games which we have Played this year. Our supply of athletic equipment has increased from prac- tically nothing to that necessary to equip pupils adequately to participate in games. Everyone is looking forward to great football seasons to come. The first night game played on the shore was between N. H. S. and Onancock at Onley. This proved to everyone the need of lighting facilities. With ene facilities we would increase our support from those outside of the school. Twenty-one players on our football squad received letters and were initiated into our newly organized Monogram Club. At the conclusion of the football season the players and cheer-leaders were entertained at a beauti- fully arranged banquet given by Mr. and Mrs. Warren Clark. , Ml BUT eon 8 Seer ee a fon: Cheer-leaders for the past year caused more concern than any other item. But no one can deny that no other school has ever had a more loyal group of pretty girls to cheer their school on to victory. The cheer- leaders were voted in as honorary members of the Monogram Club. Through the efforts of the newly organized league, all the high schools in the two counties will now be in the same league. The winner of the league title will be the champion of the two counties. A Tennis Club in the school was organized and much enthusiasm was shown by all avid tennis fans. A tennis tournament for the boys' singles cham- pionship was held around the first of May. The winner of this tournament received a trophy to represent his skill in the sport. We wish to extend our hearty thanks to Mr. Shelton for the support and help he has given us throughout the year. On coaching the football and baseball teams, he did an excellent job. Purchasing the trophy for the tennis champ was another fine thing he did for athletics here at North- ampton. The girls also were very busy this year. Mrs. Virginia Waltman suc- ceeded Miss Blackwell as girls' athletic director after Christmas. In the fall, the girls organized a basketball team and played games with Onancock, Atlantic, and Central. Since the game was new to most of the girls, and they had had time for very little training, they lost these games, even though they played hard. After this year's experience, the girls feel that they will be better players next year and hope to win their games. a YM AM “AM, WA, MT“ “MM “hh Truly this year has been an eventful one in athletics. ey “WW WW Wa aa = enaeer AIRE PLAST MS LOTIS SNLE CT O ET WOE.
