FOREWCDRD Three hundred years ago a band of thirty-nine Indian chiefs, led by Chickawallop, gave the rich meadow lands of the Nonotucks to a band of twenty English families in exchange for a hundred fathoms of wampum, ten coats, and a few small trinkets. These Nipmucs, fresh water people as they were called by their Indian brothers of the coast lands, reserved, however, the right to continue living in the vicinity, consequently, North- ampton's heritage has been enriched with Indian names and legends of the area. One of these Indian names, Nesaki, became the title of Northampton's yearbook, and the theme of the 1955 edition is designed to show this association with our early history. Nesaki, literally translated, means looking back from the top of the mountain . The publication of the yearbook stands out as the peak, whence we can best look back to four unforgettable years at Northampton High School. 4
