Sample, Jr., halfback of the Baltimore Colts, national football champions. Because of your achievements and what you have meant to Northampton County High School as one of the most outstanding half¬ backs of the 1959 season, we are inspired to go forth and achieve as you have done. The class has dedicated the 1960 edition of the “Lighthouse” to you, because you are one of Northampton’s most illustrious sons. We wish for you the best of luck in the years to come; and as you, we too look for¬ ward to achieving for Northampton. THE SENIORS MR. JOHN B. SAMPLE, JR. Principal’s Message First, let me remind you that you are graduating from high school at the beginning of another decade which promises to be the most challenging ever. If the progress made in the 50’s is any indication of what to expect in the 60’s, you need to continue your education as far as possible. Therefore, you must think of education as a contin¬ uing process--never ending--if you are to be an integral part of the decade that is being ushered in. It follows then, that you will continue to learn in one way or another after your formal educa¬ tion has been completed. It would be reasonable to think that this learning might very well receive some intelligent directions; that on your own, you will plan to do extensive reading--to engage in as much travel as possible, and to expose yourselves to the fine cultural experiences that the decade will have to offer. Remember that education does not end at three o’clock--it does not end in June--it does not end at graduation, but continues throughout life. It is our hope that you will carry the many cultural behavior patterns and good things that have been learned here with you, and that they will make you a better citizen in order that you may work with your fellow man in the era that faces you. We must congratulate you for being the first class to dedicate the “Lighthouse” to a fellow graduate. This you have justly done, because your fellow graduate has helped to carry Northampton forward by striving to be the best in his chosen profession. May this be an inspiration to you and others to strive for excellency. May God bless you, and may you be kind to yourselves as the years go by. Best wishes for a successful career. W. H. That it has encouraged us to work even harder this year in carrying out our many aims and objectives. Last year our major project was designed around a Career Day for our seniors. From all indica¬ tions, Career Day at Northampton County High turned out to be all and more than we had antici¬ pated. We feel that our students were greatly informed and inspired by our distinguished consult¬ ants, Again, in April of this year, we are planning to present our second annual Career Day. We are working towards developing the whole child in order that he may be able to find a place in our constantly changing world. Our aims and objectives for this year are as follows: 1. To make a study of the drop-outs of our students 2. To make a Follow-Up study of the graduates of 1959 3. To promote a desirable student-teacher relationship 4. To encourage the development of a demand for continued education 5. To identify the gifted child 6. To develop desirable ideas and habits of citizenship 7. To insure the pupil’s success in school We are making an earnest request that the faculty and student body support us in carrying out our program for the year. The Guidance Committee is composed of the following persons: Mrs, L. U. Kornegay, Miss D. M. Turner, Mrs. I. J. Williams, Mrs. B. M. Ervin, Chairman; Mr. F. Brickhouse, Miss C. Hayes, and Mr. W. H. Senior Class History We, the senior class of 1960, entered Northampton County High School in September, 1955. We were very eager to begin our secondary education. On our arrival we were divided into four sections by Mr. Smith. We were under the super¬ vision of Mrs. H. D. Upshur, Mrs. M. B. Collins, Mrs. E. S. McCuller and Mr. Charles E. Jones. During that year we were represented in the Homecoming Activities by Annie Allen of section A, Shirley Sample of section C, who was runner-up, and Shirley Beckett, of section D. During our Freshman year, we were under the leadership of Mr. A. B. Whitehead, Mr. Edward Busch, Jr., and Mrs. B. M. Ervin. Shirley Jones of section A, was crowned Miss Home¬ coming. In September 1957, we returned to Northampton County High School as determined Sopho¬ mores. We were divided into three sections, under the guidance of Mrs. E. S. McCuller, Mrs, B. M. Ervin, and Mr. J. B. Cook. We were represented in the Homecoming Activities by Frances Bibbins of section A, who was crowned Miss Homecoming. Other contestants were Delores Nottingham, section C, and Shirley Beckett of section B. We were represented in the May Day Activities by Fannie Rowley of section A, who was crowned May Queen. We entered Northampton County High School in September 1958 excited over the idea of planning the Junior-Senior Prom. We worked very hard and under the guidance of Miss A. J. Barber, Mrs, E. S. McCuller, and Mrs. B. M. Ervin gave a successful prom. We were repre¬ sented in the Homecoming Activities by Willie Mae Bell of section B, who was runner-up. So again in September of 1959, we returned to Northampton County High School. We entered with all the dignity attributed to seniors. We were divided into two groups and were placed under the guidance and leadership of Miss E. Fitzgerald and Mr. Odis Kornegay. We were represented in the Homecoming Activities by Gloria Wynder of section A, who was runner-up, and Shirley Spady of section B, who was crowned Miss Homecoming. We, the members of the Senior Class of 1960, are deeply grateful to our parents, principal and faculty, who have worked with us to make our every endeavor a success. Class Poem We are leaving you Northampton, and we are going away We will keep your spirit true, as we go along each day. We know you used the best you had to bring us this far; We are leaving as so many others did before. Northampton with you our hearts shall always be; Helping to bear the load--just wait and see. From you there are things we did acquire; We’ll always cherish them till the day we die. For so many years you have done your part; That is why our love for you comes from the heart. Within you there is the very best. That is why, you will always pass our test. We hope you will always keep us on your mind; Stop other children from wasting their precious time. Northampton High, as we say good bye. Some of us will be happy, and some of us will cry. Edward Parker Senior Class Prophecy The fog is thinning out and I can see each star in the class of 1960 in its chosen profession. The clouds lift, the world brightens and each face shows clear. I see John “Crazy Legs” Collins has organized his own basketball team after being rejected by the Alfonzo Staten Globetrotters. Being able to hold down only one position on the team, John has recruited Clarence Weeks, James Nottingham and Calvin Jarvis, Coach. Now I see that Shirley Sample, who after a marriage failure to the famous John Collins, has formed a partnership with John Fields. They plan to dance their way into the hearts of millions. Georgia Spady and Albert Wright, who were voted the best couple by the senior class, have been voted the worst couple by the ten little Wright’s. Constant arguing has put Mrs. Wright’s nerves on edge and she has been forced to see the country’s top authority on nerves, Dr. Edward White. Not only is Edward a neurologist ofgreat renown, but he is also a model agent. His agency is the home for many beautiful girls. Those from Old N.C.H.S. are Christine Brooks, Willie Mae Bell, Annette Satchell, Albertine and Louise Treherne. My, my, my, here stands Theodore Johnson “Before the Bar of Justice’’. It is his desire to expound upon the innocence of James Coles, alias “Pearl Willoughby’’. Well finally Alfred Dunton and Maisie Williams have tied the knot. Having decided between Alfred Dunton and Robert Jackson, Maisie decided on Alfred Dunton because of his great wealth. What a surprise it was to see Myrtis Ames still unmarried. She has opened an old maids’ home for old bachelors. Wait! Who do I see toddling down the road of life towards me? Winston and Marion Notting¬ ham, French Book in one hand, trigonometry in the other hand, giving a speech to convince on, “It’s Better to be Intelligent and Poor Than Dumb and Rich.’’ Ruth Rogers was so taken by French in High School that she is now touring France with Annie Marie Allen to convince more Frenchmen to speak French. My! Here is another footprint on the sands of time. And this number 9 1 2 belongs to Catherine Arnold. To prove that Catherine not only has brains and beauty, but bronze as well, she has chosen the woman wrestler most likely to succeed. In the meantime Norman Smith, who was noted for his mouth moves and waxed grooves, is being divorced for the fifth time. This time from Viola Beckett, who insists that his grooves are too waxed and moves are too smooth. Frances Bibbins, noted in the class of 60 for being the sorriest girl in the senior class, has become rich. She recorded a rock and roll record which sold 10, 000, 000, 000 copies. Her next record will be “Who’s Sorry Now?’’. Juanita Shockley, Delores Nottingham, Betty Carter, Ella Mapp and Gloria Wynder, former members of N.C.H.S. Girls Basketball Team, have formed a cheering squad to cheer John Collins’ team on to victory. Members ofthe men’s choral group to sing in Carnegie Hall are: David Elder, Jessie Fender- son, James Smith, Robert Harris, Curtis Beech, William Jones and Robert Harmon. A Poet of great renown is Edward Parker. Mildred Upshur, Miss Personality in the class of 60, is now on Broadway. Also in the Broad¬ way production are: Maggie Heath, Anna Francis, Lawrence Satchell, Violet Spady and Earnest Richardson. Alas! We have come to the Palace Theater, where Shirley Spady is appearing. She is being accompanied by the all-time great combo. The Counti-Aires, consisting of Curley .Smith, Ernest Holbrook, Cecil Baines, Thomas Weeks and Milton Stewart. Johnnie Mapp and Helen Gunter have joined in Holy Matrimony and are now residing on a mink farm. Their hired hands are: Alvin Stanley, Thomas Collins, Joyce Smaw and Bill Jackson. The purple dusk of the twilight hours is creeping, but through it I see Helen Morris and Karey Rowley. It seems incredible, but Helen has lost 110 pounds only to have them transferred to Karey, who now weiglis 340 pounds. The fog thickens again. It is impossible to see. I-I-I’m growing sleepy. I must sleep now and return next year.
