5 .“ 1 %■ • 4 ■ - S ' A ■A- k ft t • v • 4 I r O ' n $ ruim-pai To The Senior Class of 1953s You are to be congratulated for perpetuating the idea that has meant so much to those who have pro¬ ceeded you — the Lighthouse . We have ' observed how you have gone about promoting this edi tion with diligence and foresightedness of good citizens. This experience will most assuredly prove an asset to each of you in your after school life activities. As graduates of 1953 you will be facing a world that stands to challenge you on every hand. Never in the history of mankind have so many changes taken place with regards to human relations. Some of these changes will be new, but we feel that you are prepared to accept full responsibility of intelligent citizens and to take your places along with other citizens of your day and time. We realize that you are caught in a cross-fire of ideas. From all sides you are being offered easy substitutes for thinking. Our concern has and always will be to help you to look behind these various approaches, to stop, think, and evaluate before accepting or discarding the propositions advanced. To help you has been our goal. We believe that changes and progress are not always the same things: still, there can be no progress without changes and no changes without risks. In our present form of government you will have much to say about the changes of the future and must assume the risks of the changes. The better ycu understand your heritage and the more you know of the democratic way of life the more confidence you will have in the wisdom of your choices. Your four years of high school training should be of help to you, and they will if you remember that the end of education is to make one a good citizen, fully rounded in mind and body. Every effort has been directed towards developing you into strong men and women. You have been among the chosen of your day because you have taken advantage of that blessing which a benevolent State has bestowed upon her children — a free education. Your Commencement will mean different things to each one of you. To some it will be the commencement of higher educational work, to others it will be the beginning of home cares or work life, and 3till to others it will be the call to the services of our Country. To those of you going on to higher institutions of learning we say: Have a purpose, select a goal and work towards it with earnestness.. Know what ycu want and prepare your course of studies towards that end . To those of you who by choice or necessity will go immediately into some line of endeavor or the Armed Forces we say: Have a pur¬ pose and work towards it . Do not work for one day aimlessly because, if you do, that will be a day wasted. You are well equipped. The fact that ycu are graduating from hi i school indicates that you have high intelligence, that you know how to work and that you are ambitious. These qualities should carry ycu far. The Lighthouse , as in former years, will cast its rays of light so intensely that other classes will be inspired to continae such publication. We shall always look upon the Class of 1953 as being one that worked, assumed responsibilities and looked out for the rights and priviliges of others and by so doing, practiced democracy while in school. May God bless each of you and may your dreams and ambitions become future realities. W. H. Smith, Principal , ' AXS O art ha The Senior Class of 1953 dedicates this issue of the Lighthouse” to our former friend and classmate, Frances Edythe Upshur, who died suddenly Friday, January 1951, at the Northampton- Accomack Memorial Hospital. Although we were stunned and grief stricken when we lost our friend, we never hesitated to carry out the plans that we knew she would have favored. This book we dedicate to you Because we loved and missed you so. You were our kind and loving friend And we grieved to see you go. ' MRS. I. J. WILLIAMS HOME ECONOMICS ak-XV-tfir I;- MR. W. H. This is the Editor of the latest Edition of the News Report of 1963 bringing you the most conspicuous events of the past ten years. Now far a beginning. Did you knew that Miss Brinie Sunkins, who once aspired to be a dietician, is now Head of the Dress¬ making Department in Africa. She is having a special sale this week with prices lower than cheap. Miss Sunkins is trying to get rid of her woolen garments. Little does she know that they don ' t need woolen garments in Africa. Her helpers are Miss Marie Weeks, who is the seamstress, Miss Adlane Jackson, who is a model, Miss Annetta James, the clerk. Miss Christine Satchell, who is the designer, Miss Delois Jackson, who is Miss Satchell ' s assistant designer, and Miss Shirley Nottingham, who is the overseer. Who would have thought that those girls would indulge in such an occupation!J Can you imagine Mr. Claude Allen, who was so shy back in 1953, becoming the playboy of the season. Miss Augustine Moses has just awoked Miss Yvonn e Parker from one of her wildest dreams. Miss Moses makes it clear that she is the only girl in Mr. Allen ' s life and intends to remain the only one. Ladies and gentle¬ men, we interruptthis part of the Edition to bring you a special report from the wires of the Associated Press under WRAP News Room. Did it ever occur to you that Mr. Allie Williams would ever become the Professor of Techniques for girls in Lost Pecos, Nevada. He has hired Mr. Charles Smaw, Mr. Simon Spruiel Mr. Bernard Upshur, and Mr. Eugene Watson as his assistants. My, what interests our boys have today. Now back to our Edition. Mrs, Augustus Harmon, the former Miss Emily Johnson, is Head of the Bathing Beauty Contest Agency in Florida. Her chief assistant is Mrs. Willie Brickhouse, Jr., the former Miss Margaret Smith. The models are Misses Corine Wynder, Jennie Godwin, Gloria Satchell, and Mary Powell. The plump mode ls , says Mr. George Drummond, who is a wealthy playwright, have gone out of style . Mr. Augustus Harmon and Mr. Willie Brickhouse, Jr., both of whom are professional golf players, spend most of their spare time breeding white rats on a ranch in Mexico. The Collins and Collins ' Company has a restaurant on Cdme In or Stay Out Drive. This Company is owned and operated by none other than Misses Earnie, Sarah, and Margaret Collinx. Beef Gumbo, whose constituents are crab feet, lobster feet, and ground beef with tomatoe catsup, is thirty cents far a medium-sized bowl and fifty cents for the large. The Jones Jones Corporation which is owned and operated by none other than Misses Dorothy and Mazzie Jones, has sued the Collins and Collins ' Company for $2,000 on the ground that they are selling their beef gumbo too cheap in proportion to their size of the bowls. With what they have in that beef gumbo, can ' t they afford to sell it cheap? Mrs. Leroy Bailey, the former Miss Alice Wynder, has retired after ten successful years of raising buzzards for all the people who cannot afford turkey on celebrated holidays. Mr. Earnest Bailey, who has fiaally secured Mr. Gordon Wilson ' s position, is now better known as the lover of Choppy Hollow in Cactus Flat. He is trying with all his heart to teach his friend, Mr. John Wescott, how to capture and hold the heart of Miss Fannie Nottingham. Miss Nottingham, a nice girl of sevBnteen, insists that he should use his own mind. She declares that he is another Casanova in disguise. We all wonder what would happen if Miss Nottingham knew that her fiance ' s teacher is none other than Mr. Earnest Bailey, who has been married and divorced six times. Mr. Gordon Wilson is th© owner of a billy goat farm in Butt-em Up, Arizona. Mrs. Church Small, the former Miss Hettie Wright, has finally got her big hunk of love. Mrs. Small, who aspired to excell in the dress designing field, is now a teacher at Catch and Hold Your Man College in Iowa. Among her students are Misses Emma Satchell, who is still trying to keep up with Clifton Webb, Gwendolyn Rogers and Frances Satchell, who has done the best work at the College and was awarded the 1953 Gold Medal of L6ve, What a school and with such enticing students. Miss Doris Johnson, a concert singer in downtown No Tune, Conn., has just engaged herself to sing at the opera house in N. Y. Her cheif assistant is Miss Mary Rowley, Pianist. The Business Managers are Mr. Leroy Grimes and Mr. William Beckett, both of whom are trying to convince Miss Johnson that being their wife is more important than being a singer. According to her theme worked out by the business managers, her first song is Don ' t Let The Stars Get In Your Eyes and her last song will be Stardust . Something must have got in their eyes and operating system if that ' s what she is going to sing. Miss Emma Smith, who was a quiet girl in 1953, has suddenly started acting strangely. She now runs and whoops like an Indian. This was due to the lockjaw medicine she had taken. It was given to her by Clifton Webb, her f ami ly physician. Walter Joyner, a special physician, had to be called in on the case. Mr. Joyner stated that it was a rare type of medicine used in the experiments far guinea pigs in the jungles of Australia. Don ' t we have some farsighted people these advanced days. Mr. William Johnson, Head of the Parson Association in Parson ' s Creek, is almost splitting his brains trying to teach Mr. Lafayette Goodwyn, Mr, Clifton Harmon, Mr. Eugene Jackson and Mr. Vaughan Downing the Lord ' s Prayer. They can eaisly get the first part, Our Father , but they can ' t keep in mind where he is. Miss Effie Upshur, a member of the Amateur Actors ' Club, has just returned from Europe where she has been vacationing with her husband, Mr. Frasier Brickhouse. They were accompanied back by their five years old twins, Frasier, Jr,, and Frances. Miss Florence Gray id the twins ' nurse and, believe me, she has her hands full. At five years of age the twins weigh 87 pounds each and they are always double banking Miss Gray who still has her leg in a cast from the time they tried a wrestler ' s toe hold on her as they had seen it on television. Mr. Madison Thomas has just fallen madly in love with Miss Jacqueline Satchell, who is Head of the Nervous Heme for Old Women in Lobo Canyon. Mr, Thomas claims that she is the ideal woman for marriage. Rumor has it that they ' re planning to elope any day soon. Mrs George Bibbins, the farmer Miss Mary Smith, is the owner of a small show business on Kiptotan Road. Miss Mary Bell is business manager. She has employed Miss Yvonne Spady, the mambo dancer, Mr. Robert Baines, the tap dancer, Miss Annie Terry, the comedy star, Mr. Leroy Bailey, the drummer, and Mr. Charles King, the leader of the band. Mr. James Rhodes, our football star of the season is spending a quiet vacation in Florida. His daily walks take him to the Bathing Beauty Contest Agency uhere he is interested in Miss Mary Pcafell. For her last birthday he gave her a football filled with diamonds and pearls. Must be serious, don ' t you think? Mr. Paul Ritzie and Mr. William Sample are his competition, but since Mr. Ritzie is a dog catcher and Mr. Sample is an oyster shell roller, they ' can ' t afford to bujr pearls and diamonds. So they ' d better start looking elsewhere. ' Misses Pearl Finney, Mary Press and Fannie Finney have just returned from a round the world tour where they were acclaimed the champion women ' s wrestling team of the world. You probably wont believe it, but Miss Fannie Finney, who once had to put bricks in her shoes to wei i a hundred pounds, now tops the scaled at 182, although she is on a strick diet. Mr. Charles Perkins is their manager and trainer in addition to being the trainer of his own five sons(known as the five L’s), Leon, Leroy, Lester, Linwood and Lafayette Perkins. Mr, Perkin ' s wife is the former Miss Gladys Rhodes, who is a ballet dancer at the Drag Along Dance Academy in One Step Gully. Well, ladies and gentlemen, this brings our Edition to a close. We ' ll be back at the end of the next ten years bringing you a more smashing edition than this one. Until 1973 this is your socilite reporter Gabby Goose Mouth wishing you a very pleasant goodni it. Hiettitfir , Joseph Satchell and Howard Bailey were called to serve in the Armed On September 8, 1949, we, the cl sc of 1953, began our high school career at Northampton County High School and were divided into three sections. It took us quite sometime to bridge the gap between our former elementary school routine and the high school routine, but with the careful guid¬ ance of our advisors, Miss D. M. Turner (Freshman A) Mrs. H. G. Jones (Freshman C, and Mr. A. B. Whitehead (Freshman B), we finally settled down to begin work. We were represented in the Homecoming Festivities by Virginia Foskey of Freshman A, Emna Satchell of Freshman B, and Emily Johnson of Freshman C, who won third place. Our May Queen Contestants were Cleo Smaw of Freshman A, Augustine Moses of Freshman B, and Emily Johnson of Freshman C. At the close of the term we were proud of the fact that our Freshman year had been a success. September 1950 found us sophisticated Sophomores, eager to begin work. Our advisors this year were Mrs. M. B. Collins, (Sophomore A), Mr. W. W. King (Sophomore B), and Miss G. C. Ellis (Sophomore C). During this year we were bereaved by the death of our classmate, Frances Upshur. It was through our courage and determination that we moved on. lift the Homecoming Activities Hettie Wri it of Sophomore C won the title of Miss Homecoming. The other Contestants were Gloria Satchell of Sophomore A and Sylvia Spady of Sophomore B. In our May Day Activities Sarah Collins of Sophomore C was crowned Queen. The other contestants were Mary Press of Sophomore A and Effie Upshur of Sophomore B. From these two incidents we gained more courage with which to press forward. September 10, 1951, greeted us as honorable Juniors looking forward to that great event, the Junior-Senior Prom. We were divided into only two sections this time with Miss D. B. Craft, Advisor of Junior A Section and Mrs. H. G. Jones, Advisor of Junior B Section. Two of our classmates, Forces. Our Homecoming contestants were Emma Smith of Junior A Section and Mary Powell of Junior B Section. Emily Johnson of Section A waa selected to attend the Student Council Meeting at Peabody High School in Petersburg, Virginia. She was also selected to attend the National Conference of the New Homemakers of America in Tuskeegee, Alabama. Gloria Satchell of Junior A Section and Emma Satchell of Junior B Section were our May Day contestants. With the help of our Advisors and the hard work of the Class, we gas© one of the most memorable Proms in the history of Northampton County Hi i School. September 1952, dignified Seniors, putting away childish things. This year we were more determined to meet the standards of upper classmen under the guidance of Mr. J. E. Horsley and Miss M. V. Blanchard. In the Homecoming Activities Mary Ellen Smith of Senior A Section won the title of Miss Homecoming. The contestant from Senior B Section was Mary Rowley. This year a great deal of our time was devoted to the careful planning and preparation of our Annual, The Lighthouse . In it we wished to compile all events that would serve as memories of the pleasant days we spent at Northampton County High. We presented the first event of its kind during our stay at Northampton County Highj namely, the presentation of the great magician Count Theopholis on February 11, 1953 For the benefit of those who wish to continue their education by attending various colleges, we have selected two Colleges to visit, Norfolk Division of Virginia State College and Maryland State College. We are indeed grateful to the Faculty of our school for aiding us in the completion of our high school career. BRICKHOUSE JOHNSON I t - , Jpeniicir To Whom It May Concern: Having been warned by Dr. Father Time, our family physician that our time here is limited, we, the members of the Senior Class of 1953, do hereby publicize our last will and testament. Whereas our heirs are numerous and antagonistic towards each other and whereas we would not be able to rest easy in our graves if civil war were being carried on in our absence, we are itemizing each article of our estate that is to be given away. We do this far the express purpose of eliminating any ill will, disputes, or libel and slander suits after our demise. Jointly, we bequest to our Principal and Faculty an abundance of gratitude for their patience, courage, and wisdom which contributed immeasurably to our present success and future hopes. A simple but sincere Thank You we leave to our parents who have sacrificed so many lesser plans and hopes to the greater desire of seeing us high school graduates. To the Junior, Sophomore, and Freshman Classes we leave our loyalty, our determination, and our cooperative spirit hoping that they will thereby be successful in all their worthwhile efforts. W« also do severally make the following bequests as part of this will. 1. Claude Allen wills his baseball uniform to Edward Fisher. 2. The Guidance Committee began its work with much enthusiasm because of the success realized in previous years. The entire student body has been very receptive to this activity. We are aware of the fact that guidance services should begin when a child enters school and continue through graduation and even beyond this period. Neglect of this service at any stage in the progress of pupils may result in serious complications at subsequent stage. Believing this we have attempted through homeroom guidance and personal counseling to guide and direct all of our students in the areas so vital to a successful, happy and useful life. The Committee is composed of the following: Mrs. H. G. Jones, Mrs. L. P. King, Mrs. I. J. Williams, Mr. J. E. Worsley, Mr. C. N. Williams and Mr. W.H.Smith. The campus was tastefully decorated with our school colors, n Maroon and Gold n . The activities feegan with a parade of gloriously decorated floats representing classes and organizations of the school, and encouraged by cheering students and visitors, traveled to Cape Charles where it was led into town by brigade of cheer leaders on beaufifylly decorated cars. From there it traveled to Cheapside and bach to school. A number of anxious spectators, including the Alumni and students, awaited the parade ' s arrival and cheered enthusiastically as it circled the campus. During the half of the game between Carver High and Northampton County ' s Golden Bulls, the highlight of the day took place. A green convertible in which Miss Homecoming, Mary Ellen Smith, and her attendants rode, cruised across the campus onto the football field, circled and parked. The blowing of horns and cheers caused this scene to be the center of attraction. As the Queen descended from the car, accompanied by George Bibbins and her attendants, her charm and gracious smiles won everyone ' s heart. At this time many pictures were taken. The beautifully dressed Miss Homecoming was immediately greeted by the Captain of the football team, John Sample, who presented to her a lovely bouquet of yellow Chrysanthemums. Following the presentation of the flowers, Mr. W.H.Smith, Principal of the school, with a few touching remarks crowned the Queen. Again, horns, snapping camera shutters, cheers, and music of the Maryland State Band filled the air. With a graceful bow and a wave of the hand, . Miss Homecoming and her attendants entered the car which once circled the field to the accompaniment of excited voices and loudly blowing automobile horns. After this breath taking spectacle the game continued; Northampton’s Golden Bulls won by the score of 33 to 13. After the termination of the days activities, a dance was given in the schools Assembly room which time Miss Homecoming and her attendants formed a Court of Honor We wish to thank everyone who helped to make this event one of the most successful Homecoming in our school ' s history.
