fHew crew odu at fXt.S'CS Many extra-curricular positions filled Diane Howlett Before teaching at Northampton. Diane Howlett taught students at Southern Lehigh and Nitschmann Junior High. Howlett finds that the personalities at these schools and Northampton are similar. I am looking forward to working with all of the great kids at Northampton High School. responded Howlett when asked how she likes her new teaching job. Howlett received her teaching degree in 1967 from Wilson College, graduating with honors. Four years prior to that, she graduated from Liberty High School. During her high school years. Howlett worked as a reporter for her school newspaper. Howlett is currently teaching geometry and contemporary math. Robert Fahler I am very fortunate to have a job here at Northampton. said Robert Fahler. a 1983 graduate of Muhlenberg College. Fahler, a math teacher, is also junior varsity football coach and freshman basketball coach. In comparing Fahler’s first teaching job at Parkland with Northampton, he believes communication with teachers is much better here.” A 1979 graduate of Parkland High School, Fahler spent most of his time participating in football, basketball, and baseball. In football Fahler received the Student Athlete Award and was named outstanding offensive player. My goal is to make basketball an important part of the Northampton High School society, said Tom Donahue. the new varsity basketball coach and student liaison. Donahue graduated from Hazelton High School in 1973, achieving honors on the varsity basketball team. He played for three years, earning the title of Most Valuable Player. From there he moved on the Wilkes College, where once again, he won the basketball M.V.P. award. After graduating from Wilkes in 1978, Donahue taught history at Hazelton high School for three years. In comparing Northampton and Hazelton, Donahue feels the facilities at Northampton are better than those at Hazelton. He feels comfortable in the new environment and coaching position. Tom Donahue

c8on ‘Vopcujc ,3Tlat££ Edgar Balliet Dale Shoemaker Dale Shoemaker, a 1947 graduate of Slatington High School, began teaching Spanish at Northampton in 1957. Noted as being N.H.S.'s first Spanish teacher, Shoemaker retired following the 1984-85 school year. I enjoyed teaching at N.H.S.. but time caught up with me, commented Shoemaker. He explained that he taught many fine students, but he was tired after teaching for 27 years. As American Field Service advisor. Shoemaker chaperoned a journey to Spain in 1977. He and 20 members of his Spanish class enjoyed a one week visit during Easter vacation. Since his retirement, Shoemaker is helping publish a bi-weekly Lehigh Township newspaper. In September 1985 he began working at Lehigh County Prison as a volunteer counselor for group therapy. John Bensing. Assistant Superintendent in charge of curriculum, has worked in the Northampton Area District for 35 years. He graduated from East Stroudsberg University in 1952. I work with the administrators and teachers to make our school district a better place to learn.” commented Bensing. His job currently involves evaluating textbooks and helping to coordinate materials used in kindergarten through grade twelve. Bensing is noted for being one on the last elementary teachers to use a one-room school-house. After teaching elementary school for seven years. Bensing became principal of every elementary school in the Northampton District. Bensing's retirement will be a major adjustment period for hirm however, he feels he can adapt easily, having the freedom to move. Bensing plans on visiting his children in Florida and Virginia and working on his garden specialities”. Edgar Balliet. a 1942 graduate of Northampton High School, retired from his position as Audio-Visual Coordinator in 1984. As the A.V. manager, Balliet maintained all equipment for the entire Northampton Area School District. Balliet received his bachelor's degree in science and agriculture from Pennsylvania State University in 1949. He acquired his Audio Visual master's degree from Temple Univer sity in 1953. After receiving his master's degree, Balliet taught science at Northampton before working in the audio-visual field.

Laura Pieroni I enjoy working with the students at Northampton, but would like my own stationary room, commented Laura Pieroni in response to what she feels is a drawback to her first year teaching experience at N.H.S. A 1981 graduate of Parkland High School. Pieroni was involved in Nation al Honor Society and was honored in Who's Who in High School. Before Pieroni graduated from Ce dar Crest College in 1985, she student taught at Schnecksville Elementary School and William Allen High School. Presently, Pieroni teaches Spanish I and II. Joseph Zettlemoyer A new physics teacher at Northampton. Joseph Zettlemoyer. feels very comfortable with the small size of our school. As a graduate of Schuylkill Haven High School, he is used to a smaller school, similar to ours. As a former teacher at William Allen High School, he also feels that in a school the size of Northampton, it is easier to get to know everyone. While in high school, Zettlemoyer participated in football. basketball, and baseball. He also played football while attending Kutztown University, where he graduated in 1980. Presently, Zettlemoyer is coaching junior varsity football. After moving his family to our area. Zettlemoyer landed a teaching job at Northampton. As a teacher, coach, and father, he believes success in anything is not achieved by wishing but by hard work.” Sally Pany has fulfilled her dream of becoming a librarian. For a large part of Pany's life, she has been preparing for her chosen career. In high school, Pany worked in the school library as an aide. Comfortable with the surroundings, she decided to further her extra-curricular activity, pursuing library studies at Kutztown Universiity. After graduating from Kutztown. Pany landed her first librarian job at Warrior Run High School. This year she was hired by the Northampton School District as head librarian, replacing Janet Reed, and National Honor Society Advisor. Sally Pany J James Schaffer, a new addition to the science department, is a 1980 Catasauqua High graduate. A math and science major at Blooms-burg University, he graduated in 1984. Schaffer taught math at the junior high last year. He was surprised to see the maturity difference in the senior high students, and for that reason, enjoys the senior high better. The students were scared of me when I first arrived because I was new and they didn’t know what to expect from me. They loosened up after learning I'm not such a bad guy, commented Schaffer. While attending high school and college. Schaffer played football and basketball and was a member of the Math Honor Society. James Schaffer
