 A Trans World Airlines Jet with 145 passengers and eight crew members was hijacked in Athens. Greece, in June. The Shiite hijackers took the plane to Beirut, then to Algeria and then back to Beirut. Most of the hostages were released within days but the remaining 39 hostages were held for 17 days. One American hostage was killed. UO's lead singer Bono steals the spot light when he sings the song Sunday Bloody Sunday”. Four Palestinian terrorists hijacked the Italian cruise liner Achille Lauro while on a Mediterranean cruise. One American was killed. After the ship was released the Eqyptian government agreed to return the hijackers to the PLO. However, the hijackers were intercepted by American jets as they were flown out of Egypt and returned to Italy to stand trial.

Madonna puts on a great show for the audience, singing her hit song Holiday . Surrounded by controversy by posing for Penthouse last year. Madonna allows nothing to distract her from her music. Judas Priest’s lead singer Rob Halford rocks the audience with the smash hit You Got Another Thing Cornin’ . Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal of the English band Tears for Fears play one of their top hits for the fans. Their album Songs from the Big Chair” spent eight weeks at the top of the charts. An entire city block was destroyed in Philadelphia. Police tried to evict members of the radical group MOVE from their fortified rowhouse by dropping a small bomb on the building. A fire was started by the device and about 60 houses were destroyed.

On January 28. tragedy struck the world. The long-awaited takeoff of the space shuttle Challeng er had finally arrivedt however. 71 seconds after blastoff, the shuttle exploded. The explosion was the first in-flight disaster in 56 manned ll.S. space missions. Christa McAuliffe. a teacher from New Hampshire, was a crew member, along with six others. The entire world mourned this aerial catastrophe. A Delta Airlines jetliner crashed near Dallas in August, killing 137 people. The plane was on a flight from Fort Lauderdale. Florida to Los Angeles with an intermediate stop at Dallas-Fort Worth. Thirty-four people survived the crash, but five died of injuries later.
