SKii win XI tite Zeam chooses game over prom The varsity baseball team chose to play a game rather than attend the senior prom, and as a result, became the District XI champions. With the help of Joe Kovalchik's heavy bat, the Kids defeated Liberty 11-4. Kovalchik, playing shortstop, batted 4 for 5 with three RBI's. Mike Guzy was the winning pitcher allowing only six hits and striking out three. With seven returning starters, the team ended its regular season of play with a 12 win-7 loss record. Co-captains Kovalchik. Carl Cavallo, and Dan Reenock guided the Kids throughout the season. Kovalchik broke the school record of assists with 114. He finished the regular season batting .412 and. consequently, was selected the team’s most valuable player. Cavallo finished the season batting .329 and earned a 2 win-2 loss pitching re- cord. Reenock led the team in home runs and finished with a 3-1 pitching record. Kovalchik and Cavallo were selected as East Penn League all-stars. Others contributing to the team included seniors Guzy. Curt Beer, Ed Dumbach. Scott Neff. Dan Ziegler, and Mike Hoffman; juniors Chris Reenock and Ed Piripavel; and sophomores Dan Howard and Jeff Erschen. Carl Cavallo pitches a winning grin. Varsity baseball coach Mike Schneider feels Carl Cavallo has got everything it takes to be a great baseball player. Carl does the little things for the team that don't show up in the record books. He knows the sport well and helps everyone on the team. Add his attitude and his talents together, and you've got what every coach needs— a team player. commented Schneider. Cavallo has been playing baseball on the varsity level since his sophomore year. Alternating as a second baseman and pitcher, he holds a three-year batting average of .329 and bats in the clean-up position. As a senior. Cavallo held a 2 win-2 loss pitching record in the regular season, and led the team in assists (37) and fielding average (.963). A co-captain of the team. Cavallo played a great part of the season with an injury to his shin. After high school Cavallo plans on attending bast Stroudsburg University where he will be a member of the Warrior's baseball team. Cavallo picked as all-star Head Coach Mike Schneider gives his team last-minute instructions before th game begins. Senior Mike Guzy executes another perfect pitch.
